Emotional responding to biological challenge as a function of panic disorder and smoking.

The present investigation evaluated anxious and fearful responding to bodily sensations as a function of panic disorder (PD) and smoking status. Participants completed a voluntary hyperventilation procedure that elicits panic-relevant bodily sensations. Psychophysiological data were collected throughout the study procedures. Assessments of anxiety and bodily distress were conducted pre-challenge baseline, post-hyperventilation, and during a recovery period following the challenge. Results indicated that smokers with PD reported greater levels of anxiety and bodily distress than smokers without

Severe distinct dysautonomia in RFC1-related disease associated with Parkinsonism.

Biallelic repeat expansions in replication factor C subunit 1 (RFC1) have recently been found to cause cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS). Additional features that have been described include Parkinsonism and a multiple system atrophy (MSA)-like syndrome. CANVAS can include features of dysautonomia, but they are much milder than typically seen in MSA. We report a detailed autonomic phenotype of multisystem RFC1-related disease presenting initially as CANVAS. Our patient presented aged 61 with a sensory ataxic neuropathy who rapidly developed widespread aut

Co-occurrence of Sensory Overresponsivity with Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Childhood and Early Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Sensory overresponsivity (SOR) is characterized by challenges in integrating and responding to everyday sensory experiences. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by intrusive thoughts, ritualistic behaviors, and sensory phenomena. There is some evidence that individuals with co-occurring symptoms of SOR and OCD experience more severe anxiety than those with symptoms of OCD alone, but most studies employed small numbers of participants (typically with an OCD diagnosis) assessed at a single time point. Our 2-fold objective was to replicate previous research showing an

Role of body-worn movement monitor technology for balance and gait rehabilitation.

This perspective article will discuss the potential role of body-worn movement monitors for balance and gait assessment and treatment in rehabilitation. Recent advances in inexpensive, wireless sensor technology and smart devices are resulting in an explosion of miniature, portable sensors that can quickly and accurately quantify body motion. Practical and useful movement monitoring systems are now becoming available. It is critical that therapists understand the potential advantages and limitations of such emerging technology. One important advantage of obtaining objective measures of balance

Dyslexia: sensory deficits or inattention?

An important question in regard to dyslexia is whether or not this condition is the result of sensory deficits. A number of studies have indeed found sensory deficiencies in dyslexic readers. However, it has been proposed that these are due simply to inattention. If so, this would be expected to produce either (i) a general reduction or (ii) random reductions in performance. On the basis of published data, it seems that neither of these is in fact the case. Rather the data indicate reproducible non-random patterns of deficiencies with regard to stimulus conditions. The stimulus specificity of

[Sensory loss and brain reorganization].

It is without a doubt that humans are first and foremost visual beings. Even though the other sensory modalities provide us with valuable information, it is vision that generally offers the most reliable and detailed information concerning our immediate surroundings. It is therefore not surprising that nearly a third of the human brain processes, in one way or another, visual information. But what happens when the visual information no longer reaches these brain regions responsible for processing it? Indeed numerous medical conditions such as congenital glaucoma, retinis pigmentosa and retinal

Neuropeptide Y in juvenile migraine and tension-type headache.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is widely distributed throughout sympathetic nerve endings where it is co-stored and co-secreted with noradrenaline. It is considered a marker of noradrenergic function. To determine the role of NPY in the pathogenesis of juvenile headache, we determined its plasma levels in two groups of young migraine patients (with and without aura), in a group of episodic tension-type headache patients and in a group of age and sex-matched healthy subjects. Significantly lower plasma levels of NPY were evident in the migraine patients with aura (P < 0.001) and, to a lesser extent, in t

An association of early puberty with disordered eating and anxiety in a population of undergraduate women and men.

Eating and anxiety disorders are more prevalent in females, increase during adolescence, and are associated with early pubertal development. This study examined whether timing of puberty onset is associated with disordered eating and anxiety in a large sample of postpubertal male and female undergraduate students. Self-report questionnaires assessed timing of puberty, disordered eating, anxiety, alcohol use, personality, and sensation seeking. Females scored significantly higher on measures of disordered eating (binge eating, dietary restraint, eating concerns, and weight and shape concerns) a

Pelvic movements as rhythmic motor manifestation associated with restless legs syndrome.

Video-polysomnographic monitoring of a patient with a 4-year history of an unpleasant restless sensation originating in his lower abdomen showed stereotyped, repetitive, rhythmic pelvic body movements resembling coital behaviour at the wake-sleep transition. We discuss the association between restless legs syndrome and rhythmic movement disorder as a particular manifestation of a spectrum of rhythmic sleep-related movement disorders.

Irritable pouch syndrome is characterized by visceral hypersensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Irritable pouch syndrome (IPS) is a functional disorder in patients with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA), which presents with symptoms in the absence of structural abnormalities of the pouch. Thus, it resembles other functional disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome characterized by visceral hypersensitivity in the presence of normal rectal biomechanics. The aim was to assess pouch biomechanics and perception of balloon distension in different groups of subjects with IPAA and to correlate the findings with clinical features. METHODS: Pouch tone, compliance, and sensation

Examining content specificity of negative interpretation biases with the Body Sensations Interpretation Questionnaire (BSIQ).

Cognitive biases have been suggested to act as latent vulnerability factors for the onset and maintenance of affective and emotional disorders. Additionally, several global and specific personality constructs are known to influence the course of psychopathology (e.g., trait anxiety, optimism, anxiety sensitivity (AS), injury/illness sensitivity (IS), fear of negative evaluation (FNE)). The current study examined the specificity of the relation between these constructs and a negative interpretation bias. One hundred and fifty-four healthy participants completed the Body Sensations Interpretatio

The neurobiology of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder: altered functioning in three mental domains.

This review discusses neurobiological studies of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder within the conceptual framework of three interrelated mental domains: punishment processing, reward processing, and cognitive control. First, impaired fear conditioning, reduced cortisol reactivity to stress, amygdala hyporeactivity to negative stimuli, and altered serotonin and noradrenaline neurotransmission suggest low punishment sensitivity, which may compromise the ability of children and adolescents to make associations between inappropriate behaviors and forthcoming punishments. Second, s

Quantitative sensory testing and risk factors of diabetic sensory neuropathy.

The goal of this study was to identify risk factors for diabetic peripheral sensory neuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus in a Chinese population. Peripheral sensory neuropathy was detected by quantitative sensory testing (5.07/10 g monofilament, neurometer and 128-Hz Riedel Seiffert graduated tuning fork). Those who had two or more abnormal quantitative sensory testings were defined as having diabetic sensory neuropathy. Of the 558 non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitits subjects, 62 (11.1%) had peripheral neuropathy. In 59 (10.6%) detection was by monofilament testing, 45 (8.1%) by graduat

Respiratory sensory gating measured by respiratory-related evoked potentials in generalized anxiety disorder.

The perception of respiratory sensations plays an important role both in respiratory diseases and in anxiety disorders. However, little is known about the neural processes underlying respiratory sensory perception, especially in patient groups. Therefore, the present study examined whether patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) would demonstrate altered respiratory sensory gating compared to a healthy control group. Respiratory-related evoked potentials (RREP) were measured in a paired inspiratory occlusion paradigm presenting two brief occlusion stimuli (S1 and S2) within one inspir

[Gender differences in alcohol dependence: personality variables, psychopathological profile and personality disorders].

In this paper, gender differences in personality, psychopathology and personality disorders of alcohol-dependent patients are described. The sample consisted of 158 alcohol-dependent patients attending a psychiatric outpatient clinic (105 men and 55 women). All participants were assessed with various assessment tools related to personality (Impulsiveness Scale, Sensation Seeking Scale and STAI), psychopathology (SCL-90-R, BDI and Inadaptation Scale) and personality disorders (IPDE). There were no differences in personality variables, but the women had more anxiety and depressive symptoms and a

Impact of pelvic floor disorders and prolapse on female sexual function and response.

Pelvic floor disorders and FSD are prevalent and challenging problems. These disorders include prolapse of the uterus, cervix, vagina, bladder, and rectum and incontinence. These diseases likely affect women's sexual well-being through physical and emotional effects. Women with pelvic floor disorders often have co-existing urologic and sexual complaints. Patients who present with these urologic problems should be questioned about their sexual function. Surgical treatment in these patients may be curative of their sexual disorders (e.g., by repairing incontinence) but may also have undesired ef

Multidimensional Impulsive Personality Traits Mediate the Effect of Parent Substance Use Disorder on Adolescent Alcohol and Cannabis Use.

Theory suggests that behavioral undercontrol mediates the effect of parental substance disorder on offspring substance use, but no studies have tested multidimensional impulsive personality traits as mechanisms of risk. Adolescents (N = 392; 48% female) from a multigenerational study of familial alcohol disorder self-reported impulsive personality traits via the UPPS-P (Mage = 16.09; Range = 13-19) and alcohol/cannabis frequency one year later. The UPPS-P assesses negative and positive urgency (i.e., rash action in a negative or positive mood state), lack of premeditation (i.e., lack of planni
