Advances in regenerative medicine for otolaryngology/head and neck surgery.

Head and neck structures govern the vital functions of breathing and swallowing. Additionally, these structures facilitate our sense of self through vocal communication, hearing, facial animation, and physical appearance. Loss of these functions can lead to loss of life or greatly affect quality of life. Regenerative medicine is a rapidly developing field that aims to repair or replace damaged cells, tissues, and organs. Although the field is largely in its nascence, regenerative medicine holds promise for improving on conventional treatments for head and neck disorders or providing therapies

Reuse of cardiac organs in transplantation: an ethical analysis.

BACKGROUND: This paper examines the ethical aspects of organ transplant surgery in which a donor heart is transplanted from a first recipient, following determination of death by neurologic criteria, to a second recipient. Retransplantation in this sense differs from that in which one recipient undergoes repeat heart transplantation of a newly donated organ, and is thus referred to here as "reuse cardiac organ transplantation." METHODS: Medical, legal, and ethical analysis, with a main focus on ethical analysis. RESULTS: From the medical perspective, it is critical to ensure the quality and

Frailty and visual, auditory, olfactory, and taste senses in older patients visiting a frailty outpatient clinic.

AIM: Although studies have analyzed the relationship between frailty and human senses, few have comprehensively evaluated and examined their correlations. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between frailty and the senses of sight, hearing, smell, and taste. METHODS: The subjects were outpatients at the Locomo Frail Outpatient Clinic. Sensory organ items were evaluated subjectively, and frailty was classified as nonfrail or frail using the Kihon Checklist. Univariate analysis was performed using the presence or absence of frailty as the dependent variable. Logistic regression analysi

Sensing Utilities of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskites and Composites: A Comprehensive Review.

Recently, the utilization of metal halide perovskites in sensing and their application in environmental studies have reached a new height. Among the different metal halide perovskites, cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3; X = Cl, Br, and I) and composites have attracted great interest in sensing applications owing to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Most CsPbX3 nanostructures and composites possess great structural stability, luminescence, and electrical properties for developing distinct optical and photonic devices. When exposed to light, heat, and water, CsPbX3 and composites

Flexible luminescent non-lanthanide metal-organic frameworks as small molecules sensors.

Toxic, carcinogenic, and hazardous materials are omnipresent, generally obtained by anthropogenic activities, industrial activities, aerobic and anaerobic degradation of waste materials and are harmful to human health and environment. Thus, sensing, colorimetric detection, and subsequent inclusion of these chemicals are of prime importance for human health and environment. In comparison to other classes of highly porous materials, luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have chromophoric organic ligands, high surface area, high degree of tunability and structural diversity. They have rece

The atypical quorum sensing system of classical Brucella species.

Brucella species are notorious pathogens of animals and humans and cause significant morbidity and economic losses globally. These hardy bacteria have evolved to survive and replicate in host cells, particularly macrophages, and have developed a specialized quorum sensing system that is essential for navigating intracellular life. Moreover, successful infection of the host is dependent upon elements of the Brucella quorum sensing system. While quorum sensing is a thoroughly well-defined process in many Gram-negative bacteria, several unique features in the quorum sensing pathway have evolved t

Multisize CdSe nanocrystal/polymer nanocomposites for selective vapor detection identified from high-throughput screening experimentation.

We have implemented high-throughput spectroscopic screening tools for the investigation of vapor-selectivity of CdSe semiconductor nanocrystals of different size (2.8- and 5.6-nm diameter) upon their incorporation in a library of rationally selected polymeric matrices. This library of resulting sensing materials was exposed to polar and nonpolar vapors in air. Each of the sensing materials demonstrated its own photoluminescence vapor-response patterns. Two criteria for the evaluation of vapor responses of the library of sensing materials included the diversity and the magnitude of sensing resp

Stem cells, evolutionary aspects and pathology of the adrenal medulla: A new developmental paradigm.

The mammalian adrenal gland is composed of two main components; the catecholaminergic neural crest-derived medulla, found in the center of the gland, and the mesoderm-derived cortex producing steroidogenic hormones. The medulla is composed of neuroendocrine chromaffin cells with oxygen-sensing properties and is dependent on tissue interactions with the overlying cortex, both during development and in adulthood. Other relevant organs include the Zuckerkandl organ containing extra-adrenal chromaffin cells, and carotid oxygen-sensing bodies containing glomus cells. Chromaffin and glomus cells rev

Vagal Modulation of the Inflammatory Response in Sepsis.

The vagus nerve can sense peripheral inflammation and transmit action potentials from the periphery to the brainstem. Vagal afferent signaling is integrated in the brainstem, and efferent vagus nerves carry outbound signals that terminate in spleen and other organs. Stimulation of efferent vagus nerve leads to the release of acetylcholine in these organs. In turn, acetylcholine interacts with members of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) family, particularly with the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR), which is expressed by macrophages and other cytokine-producing cell

Is aberrant mammary tissue a marker for chronic alcoholism or kidney-urinary tract malformations?

BACKGROUND: Numerous publications describe the relationship between aberrant mammary tissue (AMT) and kidney-urinary tract malformations, individual/ familial alcoholism and sense organ disorders. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated these possible associations and reviewed 72 cases observed in our Department during the past 3 years: 30 men and 42 women, 17 of them with bilateral AMT (7 men and 10 women) and 25 patients from 9 families. Diagnosis was made according to Kajawa's classification. A detailed family history was performed asking for individual or familial alcoholism, especially in

The role of FGF15/FGF19 in the development of the central nervous system, eyes and inner ears in vertebrates.

Fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19), and its rodent ortholog FGF15, is a member of a FGF subfamily directly involved in metabolism, acting in an endocrine way. During embryonic development, FGF15/FGF19 also functions as a paracrine or autocrine factor, regulating key events in a large number of organs. In this sense, the Fgf15/Fgf19 genes control the correct development of the brain, eye, inner ear, heart, pharyngeal pouches, tail bud and limbs, among other organs, as well as muscle growth in adulthood. These growth factors show relevant differences according to molecular structures, signallin

Progressive oxygenation of developing leaves directs morphogenesis.

Oxygen availability underpins energy production in multicellular organisms, yet internal oxygen gradients arise in both plants and animals. Plants sense these variations via the plant cysteine oxidase branch of the N-degron pathway, which regulates the stability of key transcription factors. Originally linked to metabolic control, this pathway recently emerged as a development regulator. While the shoot apical meristem was shown to be hypoxic, the oxygen dynamics of organs originating from this low-oxygen niche remain unknown. Here, we show that developing leaves form a spatiotemporal oxygen g

Electropolymerization of Phthalocyanine and Corrole Materials for Mass-Based Chemical Sensing and e-Nose Applications.

The need for the development of efficient sensing materials and processing methods without compromising device performance for organic sensors is one that is continuously growing. We herein report the fabrication of porphyrinoid polymer-coated piezoelectric quartz microbalance (QMB) sensors. Three materials, para- and ortho-bis(aminophenoxy)SiPc and 5,10,15-tris-(4-aminophenyl)copper corrole, were processed through two electropolymerization techniques, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, to create sensing films for potential mass-based and electronic nose (e-nose) applications. The QMB s

Volatile compounds as bacterial communication signals: State of art, limitations and future perspectives.

Bacteria emit a wide diversity of volatile compounds as byproducts of their metabolism. Despite their increasing recognition as essential mediators of microbial interactions, their role as true communication signals and the molecular mechanisms of their perception remain incompletely understood. This review explores the biological functions of bacterial volatile compounds in a microbiological communication framework, emphasizing the distinctions between stricto sensu signaling molecules and cues. Although there are several volatile compounds that act as signals between species, there is a sign

Amphids: the neuronal ultrastructure of macrocyclic-lactone-resistant Haemonchus contortus.

The development of anthelmintic resistance by nematode parasites is a growing problem for veterinarians and producers. The intensive use of the macrocyclic lactones for the treatment of a variety of parasitic diseases has hastened the development of resistance to this family of parasiticides among sheep, goats and cattle. As a result, resistance to ivermectin, moxidectin and doramectin by Haemonchus contortus has been documented throughout the world. While the exact sites of action of the macrocyclic lactones remain incompletely known, a critical point of entry for these drugs may be the termi

Assessing sensory capacity of animals using operant technology.

Operant technology is often employed in farm management (e.g., waterers in which an animal pushes a valve with its nose or snout [response] to receive water [reinforcement]). An animal learns when successive approximations to the desired response are reinforced, thereby establishing the operant behavior (shaping). Animals are challenged by schedules of reinforcement that increase level of operant response. The method has been used to obtain quantitative measures of preference for prepared feeds, flavors, and harvest methods and feed processing. Basic information on what an animal sees in terms

Segregation of electroreceptive and mechanoreceptive lateral line afferents in the hindbrain of chondrostean fishes.

The anterior lateral line nerve (ALLN) in the chondrostean fishes (sturgeon and paddlefishes) consists of both fibers innervating ampullary electroreceptors and fibers innervating the mechanoreceptive neuromasts of the cephalic lateral line system. The fibers of the posterior lateral line nerve (PLLN) innervate only mechanoreceptive neuromasts on the body trunk. The ALLN enters the medulla via dorsal and ventral roots; the dorsal root projects to the dorsal octavolateralis nucleus (DON), whereas the ventral root and the PLLN project principally to the medial octavolateralis nucleus (MON). Convergence of olfactory inputs from both antennae in the brain of the honeybee.

Electrical activities of the olfactory neurones in the brain of the honeybee were investigated. Odorous stimuli were given to each antenna separately or to both simultaneously. The inputs from the antennae affected both the impulse frequency and the latency of the olfactory interneurones in the protocerebrum. The predominant response was to the stimulation of the ipsilateral antenna. Input from the contralateral antenna produced mainly excitatory effects, although a few inputs gave inhibitory effects. No particular relationships between the loci of the units in the brain and the types of respo

Development of ectodermal and endodermal taste buds.

The sense of taste is mediated primarily by taste buds on the tongue. These multicellular sensory organs are induced, patterned and become innervated during embryogenesis such that a functional taste system is present at birth when animals begin to feed. While taste buds have been considered ectodermal appendages, this is only partly accurate as only fungiform taste buds in the anterior tongue arise from the ectoderm. Taste buds found in the posterior tongue actually derive from endoderm. Nonetheless, both anterior and posterior buds are functionally similar, despite their disparate embryonic

Growth and structural features of the adult stage of Ascaris suum (Nematoda, Ascaridoidea) from experimentally infected domestic pigs.

For studying the morphogenesis of the adult stage of Ascaris suum, worms were obtained from experimentally infected domestic pigs. Structural and morphometric features of A. suum are analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that the increase in length of the worm from days 35 to 56 is based on a region-specific lengthening of individual transverse annuli in the cuticle. An increased worm size also results in an increased diameter of different cuticular sense organs. It is shown that a pair of lateral midbody papillae, the centrids, are prominent sensilla in the adult ma…
