Lower-extremity sensibility testing in patients with herniated lumbar intervertebral discs.

The significance of sensory changes determined by pinprick and light touch in individuals with a herniated lumbar disc has been questioned. Discrepancies may be related to the subjectiveness of the test, failure to use dermatome-specific testing sites, overlap of areas that are innervated by different nerve roots, anatomical variations, or lack of sensitivity of the testing technique. For this study, we assessed the results of sensory examinations of twenty-five patients with documented herniation of a lumbar disc. The examinations were done using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments, vibrometry, pi

Persistent (Na v 1.9) sodium currents in human dorsal root ganglion neurons.

Na v 1.9 is of interest to the pain community for a number of reasons, including the human mutations in the gene encoding Na v 1.9, SCN11a , that are associated with both pain and loss of pain phenotypes. However, because much of what we know about the biophysical properties of Na v 1.9 has been learned through the study of rodent sensory neurons, and there is only 76% identity between human and rodent homologs of SCN11a , there is reason to suggest that there may be differences in the biophysical properties of the channels in human and rodent sensory neurons, and consequently, the contributio

Biochemical studies of taste sensation. XIII. Enantiomeric specificity of alanine taste receptor sites in catfish, Ictalurus punctatus.

Specific binding of amino acid taste stimuli is known to occur to a sedimentable fraction (P2) from catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) taste epithelium or to purified plasma membranes from that fraction. L-Alanine, a potent taste stimulus for the catfish, binds in a reversible and saturable manner to these preparations. The extent to which the enantiomeric stimuli, L- and D-alanine, interact with the same or different receptor/transduction processes is investigated here both electrophysiologically and biochemically. With an electrophysiological assay, L-alanine was the more potent stimulus across a

The effects of fluoxetine on several neurophysiological variables in patients with premature ejaculation.

PURPOSE: Fluoxetine, a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, has been shown to increase the intravaginal latency of patients with premature ejaculation. We demonstrated the effects of fluoxetine on intravaginal latency, penile sensory threshold, and variables of sacral evoked response and cortical somatosensorial evoked potential in patients with premature ejaculation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 48 patients 40 who presented to our clinic with premature ejaculation met the study criteria, gave written or oral consent, and were divided randomly in a double-blind fashion into 2 groups of 20 pa

Genito-sensory analysis in women with arousal and orgasmic dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis and treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) are currently based on subjective female reports and physical examination. The GenitoSensory Analyzer (GSA) is a quantitative sensory testing tool designed to quantify vibratory and thermal sensation in the vagina and clitoris in a reproducible manner, and may therefore contribute to the diagnosis and management of FSD. AIM: To address the question of whether women with arousal and/or orgasmic sexual disorders have genital sensory abnormalities as measured by the GSA. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Thresholds for warm, cold, an

The prevalence and magnitude of impaired cutaneous sensation across the hand in the chronic period post-stroke.

Sensation is commonly impaired immediately post-stroke but little is known about the long-term changes in cutaneous sensation that have the capacity to adversely impact independence and motor-function. We investigated cutaneous sensory thresholds across the hand in the chronic post-stroke period. Cutaneous sensation was assessed in 42 community-dwelling stroke patients and compared to 36 healthy subjects. Sensation was tested with calibrated monofilaments at 6 sites on the hand that covered the median, ulnar and radial innervation territories and included both glabrous (hairless) and hairy ski…

Combined Effects of Sodium D-Isoascorbate, Phospholipids and Sodium Lactate on Storage Stability and Shelf Life of Red Sour Soup (Hong Suan Tang) Meat Filling.

Red sour soup dumpling filling, a prepared meat product from Guizhou, China, requires validated shelf-life control strategies for industrial-scale commercialization. This study investigated a composite preservation system of sodium D-isoascorbate, phospholipids, and sodium lactate using a Box-Behnken design, and evaluated its effects on color, lipid oxidation (PV, TBARS), TVB-N, texture, sensory scores, APC, and coliforms during accelerated shelf-life testing. Key indicators were identified by correlation analysis, and shelf life was predicted using log-logistic AFT and temperature-state-depen

Sense-checking the approach to quantitative sensory testing to detect chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.

People with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) have abnormalities in Quantitative Sensory Test (QST) findings. However, the predictive utility of QST for the early detection of CIPN in individuals has not been demonstrated. This will require longitudinal QST during chemotherapy treatments. However, QST is time-consuming, requires expertise and complex, costly equipment which has largely prevented its adoption in routine clinical practice. We aimed to assess approaches to develop a reliable, straightforward, time efficient and sensitive sensory testing method. Guided by patient p

Pathology of human organic mercury poisoning: Lessons from an autopsy case.

We had an opportunity to perform a general autopsy of a case with chronic organic mercury toxicosis in 2017. He had been engaged in synthesizing a variety of organic mercury compounds throughout the four years from 1966 and developed chronic organic mercury poisoning in 1969. Almost forty years on, he still remained to complain of persistent paresthesia at finger tips and tongue, and of narrowed visual field. Neurological examinations clarified a rise of two-point discrimination thresholds, a systemic increase of touch thresholds, constriction of the visual field caused by general visual depre

The effect of force and conformance on tactile intensive and spatial sensitivity.

The effect of force on intensive and spatial processing was examined with three measures of tactile sensitivity. One of the measures based on intensive cues is the smooth-grooved (SM/GV) task, and the two other measures based on spatial cues are the grating orientation and gap detection tasks. Measures were made at two locations that vary in sensitivity and in the density of innervation of the primary afferent fibers, the right index fingerpad and the palmar surface of the proximal phalanx (fingerbase). At each location, psychometric functions were generated for each of the three measures for

Skin innervation at different depths correlates with small fibre function but not with pain in neuropathic pain patients.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathy can lead not only to impaired function but also to sensory sensitization. We aimed to link reduced skin nerve fibre density in different levels to layer-specific functional impairment in neuropathic pain patients and tried to identify pain-specific functional and structural markers. METHODS: In 12 healthy controls and 36 patients with neuropathic pain, we assessed clinical characteristics, thermal thresholds (quantitative sensory testing) and electrically induced pain and axon reflex erythema. At the most painful sites and at intra-individual control sites, skin biopsie

Validity of acute and chronic tactile sensory testing after spinal cord injury in rats.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) impairs sensory systems causing allodynia. Measuring the development of allodynia in rodent models of SCI is challenging due to spinal shock and marked motor impairments. Assessment of SCI-induced allodynia is not standardized across labs, making interpretation of results difficult. Therefore, we validated sensory threshold assessment after SCI and developed a novel assessment of allodynia prior to motor recovery in a rat SCI model. One hundred fifty-six Sprague-Dawley rats received T8 laminectomy or mild to moderate SCI using the OSU SCI device (0.3 mm to 1.3 mm cord
