[Parotidomegaly in psychiatric dysorexia. 10 cases (author's transl)].

Had markedly anarchic dietary behaviour with alternating anorexia and bulimia, or even self-induced vomiting. These disturbances in dietary behaviour fall within the context of an unusual neurotic syndrome, predominantly hysterical. There were also menstrual problems, most often amenorrhoea. The physiopathological relations between these symptoms and signs may be envisaged as follows: the initial psychological problems explain the dysorexia; the menstrual difficulties are related at one and the same time to the psychological problems and the dysorexia; the latter is responsible for the parotid

[Labial salivary gland biopsy in the diagnosis of Sjogren's syndrome].

Labial salivary gland biopsy (LSG-B) along with Schirmer test and kerato-conjunctival staining with fluorescein dye was performed in 196 pat … , 6 with another CTD were diagnosed as secondary SS; 5 befitted primary SS for abnormal findings on sialography. We also found that lymphocytic infiltration in LSG-B was much more severe in primary SS than in secondary SS; this could be attributed to the use of immunotherapy for the accompanying CTD in secondary SS. There was good association in our study bet …

Accessory submaxillary gland: Two new case reports and a literature review.

BACKGROUND: The accessory submaxillary gland is a very uncommon anatomical variant, and incidence in the general population has not yet been quantified. The presence of pathology in these glands is rarer still, thus often going unnoticed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe two accessory submaxillary gland cases, one asymptomatic and the other with chronic sialadenitis in the main and accessory gland caused by sialolithiasis. Although our diagnosis was by computerized tomography, magnetic resonance sialography is helpful to understand and describe this entity with greater precision. RESULTS: T…

[Ultrasound diagnostics in Sjögren's syndrome].

Ultrasound of the salivary glands is a specific examination for detecting pathology of salivary glands in the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome. It is easy to learn, rapidly performed, non-invasive and inexpensive. Other imaging techniques, such as sialography and scintigraphy, are currently only rarely performed. For the examination, linear ultrasound probes with frequencies between 7 and 12 MHz are recommended. Such probes are already widely available to the rheumatologist performing musculoskeletal ultrasound. The parotid and submandibular glands are bilaterally scanned both in longitudinal a…

The first case of IgG4-related disease in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Recently, Mikulicz's disease has been defined as an IgG-4 related disease, a systemic condition, where the hallmark pathology fi … trate was composed of lymphocytes, while infiltrating plasma cells showed immunoreactivity to IgG4. Sialography revealed severe involvement of the salivary glands, and Schirmer's test resulted positive. CONCLUSIONS: Here, we report successful treatment of the first case in Italy of a patient with hypocomplementemic tubulointerstitial nephritis in IgG4-relate …

A case of primary Sjögren's syndrome complicated with inflammatory myopathy and interstitial lung disease.

We experienced a case of a 63-year-old woman with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) complicated with inflammatory myopathy and interstitial lung disease (ILD). She had suffered from morning stiffness and dry mouth for 1 year without being medically examined. A chest CT scan demonstrated ground glass opacity and a reticular shadow in the lower lung field. A diagnosis of SS was made based on positive findings from Schirmer's test, sialography of the parotid gland, a labial salivary gland biopsy and the presence of anti-SS-A antibody. Musculoskeletal symptoms were absent; however, the elevation of…

Association between the occurrence of matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 in parotid saliva with the degree of parotid gland damage in juvenile recurrent parotitis.

OBJECTIVE: The study was aimed to investigate whether the occurrence of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) 2 and 9 in parotid saliva of juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) patients is associated with the degree of glandular involvement. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty-three JRP patients were included. Involvement of parotid gland was assessed by sialography. Parotid saliva was assayed for MMP-2 and MMP-9 by zymography. Medical charts were examined for number of recurrences, disease laterality, and time of follow-up. Logistic regression analysis between occurrence of either MMP, the clinical parameters, and …

Sjoegren's syndrome: MR imaging of the parotid gland.

To date, myoepithelial sialoadenitis (Sjoegren's syndrome) has been diagnosed with sialography and other techniques. First results of MR imaging offer new possibilities in the diagnostic imaging of this disease. Thirty-six patients with immunohistologically and serologically confirmed Sjoegren's syndrome and 25 patients suffering from other diseases, included as a control group, were examined by MR in transverse and coronal orientation. T-2-weighted sequences (TR/TE 1600/25/90) and T1-weighted sequences (TR/TE 500/25 ms) plain and after Gd-DTPA administration were obtained. In all patients the…

[A case of Hashimoto's thyroiditis associated with renal tubular acidosis, Sjögren syndrome and empty sella syndrome].

This report describes a 48-year old female patient with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, distal-type renal tubular acidosis (d-RTA), Sjögren syndrom … TA by oral tolerance tests with the administration of NH4Cl and NaHCO3, 2) SjS by Schirmer test and sialography, and 3) ESS by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging examinations of the pituitary. Association of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, d-RTA, SjS and ESS in this case may possibly be caused by common autoimmune mechanism.

A pragmatic contouring guideline for salivary gland structures in head and neck radiation oncology: the MOIST target.

OBJECTIVES: One of the main normal tissue toxicities in head and neck radiation oncology is xerostomia. In several studies, reduced radiation dose to the salivary glands has been shown to diminish the effects of gland dysfunction. However, no clear guidelines exist to define the anatomic location of the involved glands on cross-sectional imaging in a pragmatic manner. This study presents an anatomic, computed tomography (CT)-based definition of the major and minor salivary glands. METHODS: On the basis of information from normal structure anatomy, the location of major and minor salivary glan

Symmetry of the submandibular glands in humans--a postmortem study assessing the linear morphometric parameters.

BACKGROUND: The analysis of morphometric right-left symmetry of the salivary glands is important for assessing unilateral changes discovered in these organs during diagnostic imaging. STUDY DESIGN: A study was carried out on 18 adult human autopsy neck and maxillofacial specimens from both sexes (14 males, 4 females), with age range of 17 to 73 years (mean age 49.9 years). The submandibular duct was injected with contrast medium and images were made in two projection planes. RESULTS: Morphometry performed using the obtained radiographs included: (a) caliber (mean proximal, middle, and distal

Digital subtraction ductography.

Digital subtraction techniques used in the examination of eight patients with salivary and nasolacrimal disease are described. Pleomorphic adenoma, ductal stricture, extrinsic masses, parotid-otic fistula, and a radiolucent calculus were demonstrated. The procedures are more easily performed than film techniques, and pathology is better demonstrated by digital ductography than on a film examination. Image subtraction, reregistration, and window manipulation allowed clear demonstration of ducts about the head and neck, overcoming limitations imposed by inherently high object contrast. Digital s

Is there a role for ultrasound-guided balloon sialoplasty technique in salivary gland structures.

Ductal stricture is a common cause of obstructive salivary gland disease. Balloon dilatation of the parotid duct as a minimally invasive technique is currently carried out under fluoroscopic guidance or during sialendocopy. We present a case report of ultrasound-guided balloon dilatation. A 45-year-old female presented with a long history of obstructive symptoms affecting the right parotid gland. Ultrasound examination revealed a tortuous right main parotid duct with marked dilatation throughout its course and multiple sites of focal stricture formation. A sialogram was carried out to further

Pivotal Role of Ultrasonography and Radiology in Diagnosing a Case of Sialolith.

Sialolithiasis is a condition that affects the salivary glands, which commonly occurs within the body of the submandibular gland or the Whar … gations, including an orthopantomogram, cone beam CT, neck ultrasound, and left submandibular gland sialography. Ultrasonography was preferred over other imaging techniques due to its non-invasive nature and high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in diagnosing sialolithiasis. Timely management of sialolith is critical as delayed treatment can lead to ser …
