Twenty cases of zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) ingestion (self-poisoning) were seen during the last 5 years (January 1992-December 1996). Poisoning was rare before 1986. Profuse vomiting (100%), pain in abdomen (100%), palpitation and sweating (80%), dyspnea and tachypnea (75%), metabolic acidosis (60%), shock (40%), and hypotension (40%) were the most common presenting features. Five patients (25%) died. The toxic effects were due to liberation of toxic phosphine (PH3) gas which was detected by qualitative silver nitrate paper test in majority of cases.

Liver nuclei, prepared from normal and vitamin A-deficient rats, were incubated in the presence of GDP-(14C)mannose or UDP-N-acetyl(14C)glucosamine and the labelled glycoproteins analysed by SDS PAGE. Fluorographic analysis has shown that (14C) mannose labelling is enhanced by vitamin A deficiency whereas N-acetyl(14C)glucosamine transfer remains approximately at the same level regardless of the vitamin A status; we did not notice any modification when the proteins were monitored by Coomassie blue or by silver nitrate.

Lysolecithin and sphingomyelin may be readily separated from other phospholipids on thin-layer plates impregnated with silver nitrate using the solvent system chloroform-methanol-concentrated ammonium hydroxide 65:35:8. Quantitation is carried out by determining the phosphorus content of the developed bands. The minimum amount of phospholipid that can be quantitatively determined is that which contains 0.7 micro g of phosphorus. This method has been used for the determination of lysolecithin and sphingomyelin in the tissues of mice having foam-cell reticulosis.

We report a one-step method to fabricate a free-standing supramolecular membrane composed of melamine and barbituric acid coordinated with silver nitrate (Mba-Ag) at the gas/liquid interface by a soft spray technique. MBa-Ag exhibits a folded two-dimensional layered morphology and thickness of 4.5 μm. The shortwave IR transmittance of MBa-Ag is as high as 95%, which is much higher than the transmittance of UV and visible light, and has the potential for electromagnetic wave transmission.

The etiology, prevention, and previous therapies for ingrown toenails are presented. A simple, quick, relatively painless method for treating ingrown toenails is described, in which a cotton wick saturated with iodine tincture is inserted into the affected sulcus, separating the nail plate from the skin. Granulation tissue is treated with a cotton applicator saturated with a 50 percent silver nitrate solution. This method works on more than 80 percent of the ingrown toenails seen by this dermatologist, and is well tolerated by the patient.
