The relationship between skin surface temperature, transepidermal water loss and electrical capacitance among workers in the fish processing industry: comparison with other occupations. A field study.

A field study among workers in the fish processing industry (n = 143) was performed to obtain information about skin surface temperature, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and electrical capacitance and their relationships during work. The skin temperature, TEWL and electrical capacitance were measured on the fingers, hands and forearms. A linear positive relation was found between the temperature and TEWL (in all measured areas), a linear negative relation between the temperature and capacitance (fingers and palms), and a linear negative relation between the capacitance and TEWL (fingers). Th…

A Thermopile Sensor Revealed That the Average Peripheral Wrist Skin Temperature of Patients with Major Depressive Disorder at 09:00 Is 2.9 °C Lower than That of Healthy People.

Many patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) feel worse in the morning than in the evening. To clarify the differences in morning physiological characteristics between patients with MDD and healthy participants, a wearable device that measures peripheral wrist skin temperature and heart rate (HR) was adopted. The device incorporates a thermopile sensor to measure peripheral wrist skin temperature using infrared radiation emitted from the skin surface. In total, 30 patients diagnosed with MDD and 24 healthy individuals were recruited. From 00:00 to 12:00, participants wore a wrist-worn de…

Skin temperature rise induced by calcitonin gene-related peptide in gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue-treated female rats and alleviation by Keishi-bukuryo-gan, a Japanese herbal medicine.

The effects of Keishi-bukuryo-gan on calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-induced elevation of skin temperature were investigated in gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogue-treated female rats. Leupline (1.0 mg/kg) as the GnRH analogue was subcutaneously (s.c.) injected into female rats. After Keishi-bukuryo-gan (100-1,000 mg/kg, p.o.) or 17beta-estradiol (0.010 mg/kg, s.c.) was administered to GnRH analogue-treated rats for 14 days, CGRP-induced skin temperature elevation, concentration of plasma 17beta-estradiol and pituitary gonadotropin (luteinizing hormone; LH, and follicle stimu…

Blood Flow Index and Skin Temperature Measured by Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging and Infrared Thermography After Specific Ultrasound-Guided Blocking of the C6, C7 Nerve Root: A Case Report.

Ultrasound-guided cervical nerve root block is the technique of injecting local anesthetic or steroid into the intertubercular groove outside of the cervical foramen under real-time ultrasound guidance. It has established diagnostic and therapeutic employment for patients suffering symptoms caused by cervical disc disorders and foraminal stenosis. Measures of selective nerve root blockade would have vital clinical utility, especially in multilevel disease or combined with atypical symptoms, where subjective assessment is difficult. This case reported a 47-year-old male patient who suffered fro

The rationale for monitoring both skin and invasive temperatures in locoregional recurrent breast cancer patients treated with postoperative re-irradiation and superficial microwave hyperthermia exceeding 1 cm target depth.

BACKGROUND: Thermoradiotherapy at 40-43 °C is an effective treatment for locoregional recurrent (LRR) breast cancer patients. During hyperthermia temperature monitoring is often limited to skin temperatures, but their predictive value for achieving locoregional tumor control (LRC) remains unclear for tumor depths ≥1cm. This study compared predictive value of skin versus invasive intratarget temperatures. METHODS: We reported earlier the thermal dose-effect relationship in 112 patients with LRR breast cancer treated in 2010-2017 with postoperative re-irradiation (8 × 4 Gy/23 × 2 Gy) and 4-5 we…

The application value of early postoperative pain management (EPPM) combined with skin temperature monitoring (STM) after flap repair of soft tissue defects in the lower limbs: a non-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Flap repair is often required when repairing soft tissue defects in the lower limbs. Although early postoperative pain management (EPPM) can improve postoperative comfort and rest efficiency, and reduce the probability of complications, it cannot detect tissue blood circulation disorders in time. The purpose of this study was to explore the application value of EPPM combined with skin temperature monitoring (STM) after flap repair of soft tissue defects in the lower limbs. METHODS: We retrospectively collected the data of 101 patients who underwent lower limb soft tissue defect fl…

The case of a woman with bilateral Dupuytren's contractures who developed CRPS-1 after fasciectomy with no relapse on subsequent collagenase clostridium histolyticum injection and manipulation of the other hand: Considerations for implementing a Budapest criteria checklist and assessing vasomotor instability by measuring differences in skin temperature.

BACKGROUND: For patients who experience atypical neurogenic pain thought to be complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) after Dupuytren's fasciectomy early recognition has been reported to improve outcomes. Furthermore, given the progressive nature of Dupuytren's, individuals with a history of CRPS have been "at risk" for further surgical intervention. PURPOSE: To familiarize therapists with a Budapest criteria (BC) checklist for early diagnosis of CRPS, describe how tracking sudomotor/vasomotor signs alongside differences in skin temperature were used to monitor vasomotor instability and interv…

Infrared Thermography Imaging for Assessment of Peripheral Perfusion in Patients with Septic Shock.

Skin temperature changes can be used to assess peripheral perfusion in circulatory shock patients. However, research has been limited to point measurements from acral parts of the body. Infrared thermography allows non-invasive evaluation of temperature distribution over a larger surface. Our study aimed to map thermographic patterns in the knee and upper thigh of 81 septic shock patients within 24 h of admission and determine the relationship between skin temperature patterns, mottling, and 28-day mortality. We extracted skin temperature measurements from zones corresponding to mottling score…

Effect of isolated head heating and cooling on sweating in man.

A double climate chamber which permitted the independent regulation of temperature in each chamber was used to produce isolated head heating and cooling in three subjects. Deep body temperature was recorded from the tympanic membrane, oral cavity, esophagus, and rectum. Skin temperature was measured on nine body regions and a weighted mean skin temperature was calculated. Sweating rate was measured by resistance hygrometry from six regions. When head skin temperature was increased, deep body temperature measured at the tympanic membrane and oral cavity increased more than esophageal temperatur…

Effect of hypoxic breathing on cutaneous temperature recovery in man.

Effect of hypoxia (12% O2) on skin temperature recovery was studied on healthy young men. Forty male volunteers free of any respiratory disorder were randomly selected to participate in the study. Skin temperature, peripheral blood flow, heart rate and end expiratory PO2 and PCO2 were measured. During hypoxic ventilation the peripheral blood flow was reduced and a corresponding drop in skin temperature occurred. This was partly due to hyperventilation associated with hypoxic ventilation. The recovery of skin temperature after cooling the hand for 2 min in cold water (10-12 degrees C) took 5.5 …

Temperature variation in newborn babies: importance of physical contact with the mother.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia is a major cause of deterioration and death in the neonatal period. Temperature deviations are key signs of illness. OBJECTIVE: To determine normal patterns of temperature variation in newborn babies and the influence of external factors. METHODS: Abdominal and foot skin temperature were continuously recorded in 27 healthy full term babies during the first two days of life and related to the care situation-that is, whether the baby was with the mother or in its cot. The recordings were made using no wires to avoid interference with the care of the neonate. Ambient tem…

Elevated core temperature in addition to mental fatigue impairs aerobic exercise capacity in highly trained athletes in the heat.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of elevated core temperature by exposure to heat stress vs. heat exposure without elevated core temperature (mean skin temperature only) in addition to mental fatigue on aerobic exercise capacity in the heat. Seven highly trained athletes completed two experimental conditions: elevation in core and skin temperatures (hyperthermia: HYP), and skin temperatures (SKIN). Participants performed the AX-Continuous Performance Task and Stroop Task to induce mental fatigue during a warm water immersion at 40 °C (HYP) and a passive seated heat expo…

Assessment of alternative metrics in the application of infrared thermography to detect muscle damage in sports.

Objective. The association between muscle damage and skin temperature is controversial. We hypothesize that including metrics that are more sensitive to individual responses by considering variability and regions representative of higher temperature could influence skin temperature outcomes. Here, the objective of the study was to determine whether using alternative metrics (TMAX, entropy, and pixelgraphy) leads to different results than mean, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation (SD) skin temperature when addressing muscle damage using infrared thermography.Approach.Thermal images from fou…

Within-subject correlations between evening-related changes in body temperature and melatonin in the spinal cord injured.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) demonstrate altered circadian variation in thermoregulatory control. Recently, we reported that tetraplegia is associated with a blunted release of melatonin in the evening. In order to examine whether this finding relates to circadian thermoregulation, we compared the correlations between evening changes in melatonin, core and skin temperature between thoracic and cervical SCI and able-bodied participants. METHODS: In 10 able-bodied, 9 paraplegic and 8 tetraplegic participants, we measured, between 1900 and 2300 h, core temperature, pro…

Skin to skin care:heat balance.

Skin to skin care has been practised in primitive and high technology cultures for body temperature preservation in neonates. Regional skin temperature and heat flow was measured in moderately hypothermic term neonates to quantitate the heat transfer occurring during one hour of skin to skin care. Nine healthy newborns with a mean rectal temperature of 36.3 degrees C were placed skin to skin on their mothers' chests. The mean (SD) rectal temperature increased by 0.7 (0.4) degrees C to 37.0 degrees C. The heat loss was high (70 Wm-2) from the unprotected skin of the head to the surrounding air.…
