The where and the why: sources of information about COVID-19 vaccines among migrants in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Access to timely, accurate health-related information can protect migrants' health during public health crises. However, unmet language needs, social alienation and mistrust were among the barriers that migrants faced in accessing official information about COVID-19 and recommended vaccines. This study aimed to explore information-seeking behaviour about COVID-19 vaccines among Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) born migrants in Australia. METHODS: With an explanatory mixed-method approach, we employed an online survey followed by semi-structured interviews. Survey and interviews…

Theorizing "Big Events" as a potential risk environment for drug use, drug-related harm and HIV epidemic outbreaks.

Political-economic transitions in the Soviet Union, Indonesia, and China, but not the Philippines, were followed by HIV epidemics among drug users. Wars also may sometimes increase HIV risk. Based on similarities in some of the causal pathways through which wars and transitions can affect HIV risk, we use the term "Big Events" to include both. We first critique several prior epidemiological models of Big Events as inadequately incorporating social agency and as somewhat imprecise and over-generalizing in their sociology. We then suggest a model using the following concepts: first, event-specif

Cross-sectional and longitudinal relations among children's trust beliefs, psychological maladjustment and social relationships: are very high as well as very low trusting children at risk?

Four hundred and thirty-four children enrolled in school years 5 and 6 in the United Kingdom were administered measures of trust beliefs in peers/best friends and psychosocial functioning (internalized maladjustment, self-perceived social acceptance, social preference, and social exclusion) across an 8-month period (mean age = 9 years-9 months at Time 1). The relation between children's trust beliefs in peers or trust beliefs within best friend dyads and measures of psychosocial functioning conformed to a quadratic pattern. Compared to children in the middle range of trust beliefs, children wi

The fallacy in postmastectomy depression.

The prominence of postmastectomy depression and loss of self esteem, together with its reputed relation to symbolism or sexual significance of the breasts, has been investigated. Neither could be confirmed. Forty newly diagnosed breast cancer patients were compared with 50 women with other types of cancer. Only 20 per cent of breast patients and 18 per cent of others reported the syndrome of depression, lowered self esteem, increased health concerns, and loss of energy. Peak emotional distress did occur in breast patients about two to three months after mastectomy, a finding which may be influ

Effect of marijuana and placebo-marijuana smoking on psychological state and on psychophysiological cardiovascular functioning in anginal patients.

Ten male anginal patients with angiographically documented coronary artery disease, in a randomized double-blind crossover study, smoked one marijuana cigarette (containing 18 mg of delta-9-THC) on one morning and one placebo marijuana cigarette (containing 0.05 mg of delta-9-THC) on a successive morning. Significant increases occurred in average cognitive and intellectual impairment scores, derived from the objective content analysis of 5 min of speech, 30 mins after smoking the marijuana cigarette as compared to the placebo marijuana cigarette, and these scores decreased to near presmoking l

The lived experiences of familial mental illness stigma among persons living with mental illnesses.

Persons with mental illnesses may experience stigma from their immediate family members in addition to other forms of stigma. The researchers used semi-structured interviews to investigate the experiences of familial mental illness stigma among 15 people diagnosed with mental illnesses in a mid-sized city in Canada. Five themes that spoke to participants' experiences of familial mental illness stigma and ways to reduce it were identified by the investigators. The themes included: diagnosis as a 'double-edged sword,' potential familial isolation, familial stigma as societal stigma localized, st

"This is the first time I felt they're mine": the significance of tattoos in coping and identity reconstruction following mastectomy.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer and subsequent mastectomy result in significant physical and emotional changes, including damaged body image, compromised sense of femininity, diminished self-esteem, and profound experiences of grief and loss. While reconstruction procedures are routinely offered, some women choose artistic mastectomy tattoos as an alternative means of reclaiming their bodies and reconstructing identity. OBJECTIVE: Grounded in the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement, this study explored how women utilize post-mastectomy tattoos as coping mechanisms and meaning-making proce

Latent Profiles of Early Maladaptive Schemas and Their Associations With Suicide Risk Factors in Patients With Mood Disorders.

PURPOSE: Although early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) have been linked to suicidal ideation, their heterogeneous nature has not been fully explored in this relationship. This study sought to identify distinct latent profiles based on 18 EMSs in a clinical sample and examine how these profiles differ in relation to suicidal ideation and suicide risk factors, such as perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness and fearlessness about death. METHOD: Data from routine clinical assessments of 799 outpatients with mood disorders (aged 18-49 years, 513 female, 286 male, Mage = 28.71) were analysed.

Early Maladaptive Schemas and Gaming and Alcohol Use Disorder Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The study investigated the relationship between early maladaptive schemas (EMS), gaming disorder (GD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms. Previous studies did not address the possible relationship between AUD and GD symptoms, which could lead to an incomplete understanding of the relationship between EMS and these disordered behaviours. The current study addressed this research gap by testing the relationship between AUD, GD symptoms and EMS. METHODS: The study included 1054 participants (565 females, M = 22.96 years, SD = 2.52) who reported playing video games and consuming

Confirmatory factor analysis of Acute Suicidal Affective Disturbance in a sample of treatment-seeking eating disorder patients.

INTRODUCTION: We examined the factor structure of Acute Suicidal Affective Disturbance (ASAD) in individuals with eating disorders. ASAD is a proposed diagnosis with four symptoms: rapidly increasing suicidal intent, social or self-alienation, hopelessness regarding the previous symptoms, and overarousal. METHODS: Patients with eating disorders (N = 378) completed self-report symptom questionnaires at admission to a partial hospitalization program for eating disorders. Using proxy measures, we conducted a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the one-factor model of ASAD. RESULTS: Initial mo

The Experience of Disgust in Women Exposed to Domestic Violence in Turkey.

In trauma, fear as a basic emotion that evokes avoidance after exposure to a traumatic event is important for posttraumatic process. Another emotion causing avoidance is disgust. Despite the fact that disgust also plays an important role in trauma, there is limited information about how it is experienced during and after exposure to the traumatic event. In this study, the aim was to understand how women experience disgust during and after domestic violence, as a prolonged and repeated traumatic experience, and how they try to cope with disgust evoking situations in this process. For this aim,

An Empirical-Phenomenological Exploration of Anderssein (Feeling Different) in Schizophrenia: Being in-between Particular and Universal.

INTRODUCTION: In this paper, we wish to elucidate alterations of basic existential and intersubjective configurations in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) through the phenomenon of Anderssein ("feeling different"). Anderssein is an important yet neglected notion from German psychiatry, referring to a specific sense of feeling profoundly different from others occurring in SSD. Although phenomenological-psychopathological research mentions it as an aspect of the core disturbance of SSD (namely, "self-disorders"), the phenomenon has not yet been explored in empirical or theoretical detail.

Access into professional degrees by students with disabilities in South African higher learning: A decolonial perspective.

BACKGROUND: Former historically disadvantaged social groups such as women, black people and those with disabilities are expected to participate in the skilled labour force that South Africa has pledged to produce for the 21st century. However, in the South African context, research widely neglects access of those into professional degrees in higher learning. There is a need for such an exploration because people with disabilities have been found to be excluded from professional employment. OBJECTIVES: Using decolonial theory, this empirical study sought to explore obstacles confronted by stud
