Lifetime influences for cannabis cessation in male incarcerated indigenous australians.

INTRODUCTION: Urban non-indigenous populations report life events (marriages, employment) as influences for self-initiated cannabis cessatio … w-up. Community-based programs focusing on positive influences, such as family responsibilities and social cohesion, may be successful within indigenous populations with strong kinship responsibilities, rather than programs that focus solely on substance harms.

[Orthopedics and trauma surgery in national and collective defence : Resilient emergency and palliative care in crises and armed conflict situations].

BACKGROUND: The current European political security environment is very tense due to the return of conventional and hybrid warfare. National and collective defence have again become key political tasks. In this context, the resilience of the healthcare system, understood as critical infrastructures contributing to social cohesion, institutional trust and democratic stability, have moved to center stage. Orthopedics and trauma surgery (O&U) are central to injury care, while palliative medicine represents an essential component of humane and functional healthcare provision in crises and armed co…

A historical narrative of mental health and war: from antiquity to the twenty-first century.

Warfare has repeatedly reshaped psychiatry, compelling societies to confront the psychological, moral, and social consequences of organised … ce misuse, and complex grief. Paradoxical patterns, including wartime declines in suicide linked to social cohesion, highlight the interplay between individual distress and collective purpose. The post-Vietnam recognition of PTSD advanced legitimacy and care but also exported a Western diagnostic lens that can obscure local expressions of suffering and structural …

Disrupted senses and social cues: Impacts of nanoplastics and methylmercury on zebrafish neurodevelopment.

With the advancement of analytical techniques and the global increase in plastic pollution, nanoplastics (NPs) have been increasingly detected across all ecosystems and in deep tissues, including the human brain. Notably, NPs are capable of acting as vectors for co-contaminants such as heavy metals, raising concerns about their combined toxicity. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to 250 nm polystyrene NPs (1000 µg/L), either alone or in combination with 10 µg/L of methylmercury (MeHg), during the first 30 days of development. Neuromast development and vibrational startle resp

Comparing global and community indicators of safety and peace.

UNLABELLED: Indicators measuring the progress of safety and peace have been pursued at a macro (global) and meso level (community). While global indicators focus on the country-level indicators, it does not consider the community-level contextually relevant needs of the indicators. While the global indicators present a general framework to measure safety and peace, these constructs are dynamic and fluid, and thus understood differently within and across countries, provinces and communities. Drawing on data collected through community participatory processes, this study aims to compare existing

Ritual to relief: ethical frontiers in repurposing psychoactive substances.

Psychoactive substances, known for their acute impact on perception and cognition, are gaining attention for their potential therapeutic applications. Many of these substances are plant-derived with deep-rooted histories of use in non-medical contexts, where they have been viewed as either tools for social cohesion or sources of discord, depending on cultural and societal contexts. This review explores psychoactive substances; psychedelics, cannabis, and stimulants, in a legitimized medical context, focusing on the ethical considerations shaping research and the regulatory and prescribing chal…

Promoting Cross-Racial and Ethnic Friendships in Schools: Roles of School Diversity and Interracial Climate and Intersections with Immigrant Status.

Cross-racial/ethnic friendships are associated with positive outcomes related to social cohesion; however, attention to the specific school contextual factors that promote these friendships during adolescence and how such factors vary by adolescents' social positions is lacking. This study examined how school diversity and interracial climate were related to students' friendship diversity and whether these associations differed by immigrant status. The participants were from a diverse sample of 591 U.S. 9th graders who were approximately 14- to 15-year-old across 29 schools (10% Asian American…

Maintaining patients' social contacts through displaying nonverbal awareness information on mobile devices.

Awareness systems had been invented for supporting groups collaborating simultaneously over a network. They provide each group member with real-time information about the state of affairs on the remote locations of the other members. Awareness systems have also been observed to help remote collaborators develop the same shared sense of community that often emerges within co-located work groups, and this effect of creating or maintaining group cohesion is an important goal in itself. Purely social awareness systems can be employed by any kind of group, e.g. families, without shared work tasks.

A community conversation process to establish resident and service provider perspectives on needs related to use and treatment of opioids and substances.

INTRODUCTION: Rates of fatal overdose due to opioid and substance use in Richmond, Virginia increased from 44.6 in 2018 to 129.5 per 100,000 city residents in 2023. The underlying contexts surrounding the increase in substance use and overdoses in Richmond, Virginia remains poorly understood. METHODS: Using community based participatory research principles (CBPR), a series of "community conversations" with neighborhood residents were conducted between May-December 2023. These events included educational information, resource connection, and facilitated qualitative focus group discussion on fa

The Silencing Effect of Disorganization: Community Structure as a Moderator of the Pathway from Gender Stereotypes to Intimate Partner Violence.

This study examines how community-level social structure moderates the pathways through which traditional gender role stereotypes translate into intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. Cross-sectional data from the 2023 Jeju Domestic Violence Survey (N = 707) were analyzed using multigroup structural equation modeling, with participants classified by the Social Disorganization Index (SDI) of their residential administrative district. The pathways linking gender stereotypes to victimization differed substantially by community context. In low-SDI communities, gender stereotypes facilitate

Capitalizing on change: Habitus transformation and cancer mitigation in the field of firefighting.

While cancer remains the leading cause of occupational death among firefighters, cancer mitigation efforts are not always successful. This study examines how health practices become durable behavioral changes within the professional field of California firefighters. Drawing on 48 in-depth interviews, we examine how health uptake has been successful in a field where resistance would be expected based on the entrenched tradition and masculine culture. Integrating Bourdieu's framework with Fundamental Cause Theory, we show that cultural, symbolic, and social capital must be reconfigured concurren

"There's More to It Than Just a Box Check ": Measuring Prison Climate in Three Correctional Facilities.

The imperative to heed social environment and power of the situation, particularly as applied to prison settings, dates to the 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment; the widely cited study concluded that situational factors, not personality, created the damaging conditions observed. Despite critical need for research on prison climate, measurement has met stiff challenges, and little research on prison culture exists in the United States. This study applies a 17-item scale, primarily based on Essen Climate Evaluation Schema (EssenCES), an instrument validated in Australia, Germany, and the United Ki
