Towards a conceptual model of queer social safety: insights from LGBTQ+ narratives of safety and unsafety.

Social safety has recently emerged as an important framework for understanding how environments influence health and well-being, yet it remains underexplored within LGBTQ+ research. This study examined LGBTQ+ individuals' experiences of social safety and social unsafety and developed an empirically grounded conceptualisation of queer social safety. Ninety-seven LGBTQ+ adults living in Italy responded to two open-ended questions regarding experiences of social safety and social unsafety. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and used to develop a conceptual model of queer social

Having friends and Rett syndrome: how social relationships create meaningful contexts for limited skills.

PURPOSE: The experiences of a teenage girl with Rett syndrome who was being educated in an inclusive middle school are described to provide a better understanding of how social relationships create meaningful contexts for individuals with limited skills. The case example is used to illustrate the principle that contexts (including expectancies, acceptance, philosophical principles) can be designed to support meaningful social relationships, despite social and intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Naturalistic observations of social interactions over a two year period are reported to illustrate t

'Hath charms to soothe . . .': an exploratory study of how high-functioning adults with ASD experience music.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 high-functioning adults on the autism spectrum, in order to examine the nature of their personal experiences of music. Consistent with the literature on typically developing people's engagement with music, the analysis showed that most participants exploit music for a wide range of purposes in the cognitive, emotional and social domains, including mood management, personal development and social inclusion. However, in contrast to typically developing people, the ASD group's descriptions of mood states reflected a greater reliance on internally …

Effectiveness of a program for the development of socio-emotional competences in people admitted to a penitentiary center.

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effectiveness of a program for the development of social and emotional competences and self-esteem among a group of inmates at a penitentiary center, as well as to determine the possible correlation between the variables of the program (social skills, emotional competences, and self-esteem). The objective was to equip inmates with social competences in emotional regulation strategies that would be useful to them in the penitentiary center and, at the same time, facilitate their future social inclusion. In order to measure the pre- and post- treatme…

Disinhibited and angry: Investigating the relationship between social disinhibition and the components of aggression following severe TBI.

Social disinhibition and aggression share many similarities. But unlike with aggression, research evidence about social disinhibition following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is limited and treatments are missing. Establishing the association between aggression and social disinhibition would facilitate a better conceptualization of these disorders. This study aimed to determine the relationship between social disinhibition and aggression following severe TBI.In this case-control study, 25 individuals with severe TBI and 25 control participants completed the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionn

Social role functioning in Parkinson's disease: A mixed-methods systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that often impedes activities of daily living (ADL) and social functioning. Impairment in these areas can alter social roles by interfering with employment status, household management, friendships, and other relationships. Understanding how PD affects social functioning can help clinicians choose management strategies that mitigate these changes. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods systematic review of existing literature on social roles and social functioning in PD. A tailored search strategy in five databases

Social Functioning Profiles in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in China: A Preliminary Identification of Subtypes.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit considerable heterogeneity in social functioning, suggesting the existence of distinct latent subtypes. A total of 479 Chinese children diagnosed with ASD (Mage = 9.338 years) were assessed using the Mandarin translation of the Stanford Social Dimensions Scale (SSDS). This measure aims to better comprehend individual differences in key social dimensions in ASD. Using the latent profile analysis (LPA) method, four profiles were identified and named based on their characteristics, and differences among the profiles were validated using data fr

Assessing social support, companionship, and distress: National Institute of Health (NIH) Toolbox Adult Social Relationship Scales.

OBJECTIVE: The quality of our daily social interactions-including perceptions of support, feelings of loneliness, and distress stemming from negative social exchanges-influence physical health and well-being. Despite the importance of social relationships, brief yet precise unidimensional scales that assess key aspects of social relationship quality are lacking. As part of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Toolbox for the Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function, we developed brief self-report scales designed to assess aspects of social support, companionship, and social distres

'For the First Time, I Felt Seen': Understanding What Helps Autistic Emerging Adults Feel Safe and Included on Social Media.

Social media is a prominent part of everyday life and is used regularly to connect users with a diverse network of content and people from around the world. Research on social media among autistic individuals has largely focused on online risks (e.g., cyberbullying) among children and adolescents, with limited attention to the perspectives of autistic emerging adults (i.e., aged 18-29), particularly regarding social media safety and inclusion. The aim of this qualitative study was to understand what helps autistic emerging adults feel safe and included on social media, focusing on their lived

Social and programmatic vulnerability in the context of transgender people's health: a scoping review of scientific evidence from Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Most transgender people face different conditions of health vulnerability on a daily basis. In the Brazilian context, no research review has been found on such situations in the light of the theoretical conceptualization of multidimensional vulnerability. This research aimed to identify and analyze components of social and/or programmatic vulnerability that interfere with access to health care for trans people in Brazil. METHODS: The scoping review followed the JBI Manual and the PRISMA-ScR list. Brazilian studies published in any language, in the period 2019-April 2023, in the NC

Examining Valued Social Participation of Disabled Older Adults Through the Frameworks of Critical Gerontology and Critical Disability Studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The importance of social participation for older adults has been well articulated. Missing from this discourse is a critical consideration of how social participation is shaped by political, economic, and social contexts that marginalize aging and disabled bodies. We bridge this gap by applying critical gerontology and critical disability frameworks to our analysis of how access to health and social services and individual and environmental factors are associated with engagement in valued social activities among disabled older adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Us

To sign-up or not to sign-up: Predictors of problematic social media use among emerging adults.

OBJECTIVE: The pervasiveness of social media has led to a growing cause for concern regarding potential adverse effects that may stem from excessive social media usage, particularly in relation to its psychological effects. The authors in this study investigated problematic social media use and it's predictors among emerging adults in the Indian context. METHODS: We employed stratified cluster sampling technique in this cross-sectional study to select a sample of 204 students from government and private institutions. The inclusion criteria was specific to emerging adults aged 18 to 22 years.

Relationship of social isolation with mental distress among older Korean Americans: The moderating role of social cohesion.

Social isolation has been associated with poor mental health outcomes, particularly for older immigrants who do not have a protective social environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of social isolation (living alone, marginal family ties and marginal friend ties) with mental distress and to examine the moderating role of social cohesion (family cohesion and community cohesion). We hypothesised that social isolation and social cohesion would be directly associated with mental distress and that social cohesion would buffer the influence of social isolation on me

Marginalization of Maltreatment of Family Caregivers of Older People in Sub-Saharan Africa: An Epistemic Injustice?

This theoretical paper interrogates aging and caregiving, focusing on the abuse of caregivers of older people in Sub-Saharan Africa, through the lenses of Epistemic Injustice, Social Identity, and Feminist Theories. Epistemic Injustice shows how societal structures silence caregivers' voices. Social Identity emphasises communal values over individual well-being, thereby silencing accounts of abuse. Feminist Theory highlights how gender roles increase female caregivers' vulnerability. Recognising these intersectional influences could foster inclusive discourse on caregiver well-being. The paper

The Role of Compassion and Self-Compassion in Community Integration and Emotional Well-Being: A Systematic Review Focused on Homelessness.

Homelessness is widely regarded as one of the most severe forms of social exclusion and represents an urgent public health challenge. Notably, compassion has been proposed as a construct of social cognition closely linked to emotional well-being and as a facilitator of community integration. Although the importance of compassion within intervention teams and public attitudes toward people experiencing homelessness (PEH) has been emphasized, little is known about the processes of compassion and self-compassion among PEH. Hence, a systematic review was conducted with two main objectives: (a) to
