Enhancing Older Adults' Lives Through Positive Aging Perception, Quality-of-Life Enhancement, and Social Support to Drive Acceptance and Readiness Toward Indoor Assistive Technology: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The growing aging population faces increasing mobility limitations, highlighting the need for assistive technologies as potential solutions. These technologies support the independence and well-being of older adults and individuals with mobility challenges. Indoor mobility is essential for daily activities and significantly impacts their lives. Limited indoor mobility can reduce quality of life and heighten the risk of falls. OBJECTIVE: This study explores how positive aging perceptions, quality-of-life enhancements, and social support influence the acceptance and readiness of ind

Asthma-COPD overlap syndrome in the US: a prospective population-based analysis of patient-reported outcomes and health care utilization.

BACKGROUND: Prior work suggests that asthma-COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS) has a greater health burden than asthma alone or COPD alone. In the current study, we have further evaluated the health burden of ACOS in a nationally representative sample of the US population, focusing on patient-reported outcomes and health care utilization and on comparisons with asthma alone and COPD alone. Patient-reported outcomes are especially meaningful, as these include functional activities that are highly valued by patients and are the basis for patient-centered care. METHODS: Using data from the Medical Exp

Preliminary Results of a Grounded Theory Study on Using Mobile Health for Physical Activity.

As the first stage of substantive theory building, this study explored the behavioral responses of people with long-term weight concerns using mHealth to increase their physical activity within a New Zealand context. A constructivist grounded theory method was adopted. Twenty-two participants with long-term weight concerns and personal experience using mobile health to increase physical activity participated in in-depth interviews. Four themes and eight categories were conceptualized: motivation, physical activity behavioral responses, mobile health evaluation, and social interaction. The role

Addressing the Need for Universal Cognitive Assessment Among Older Adults With Congestive Heart Failure.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) and cognitive impairment (CI) are common in older age and often occur together. However, CI is often unrecognized leading to more hospitalizations and increased morbidity and mortality in patients with co-occurring CHF and CI. Universal screening can help identify these patients earlier and the use of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) 4Ms Framework (i.e. "What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility") can serve as a tool for providers to meet patients' needs surrounding goals of care, medication regimens, mental and emotional well-being, and mo

Perspectives on use of mobility aids in a diverse population of seniors: implications for intervention.

BACKGROUND: Many older adults who might benefit from using mobility aids do not or will not use them. Studies show that attitudes and beliefs strongly affect the decision to use mobility aids. Despite the growing diversity of the population, no prior studies have compared attitudes towards and beliefs about mobility aids by race and ethnicity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore whether and how attitudes towards and beliefs about mobility aid use vary by race and ethnicity. METHODS: We conducted 12 focus groups with 61 community dwelling persons age 65+ years from three groups: White, non

Validity and applicability of a video-based animated tool to assess mobility in elderly Latin American populations.

AIM: To assess the reliability and the validity of Portuguese- and Spanish-translated versions of the video-based short-form Mobility Assessment Tool in assessing self-reported mobility, and to provide evidence for the applicability of these videos in elderly Latin American populations as a complement to physical performance measures. METHODS: The sample consisted of 300 elderly participants (150 from Brazil, 150 from Colombia) recruited at neighborhood social centers. Mobility was assessed with the Mobility Assessment Tool, and compared with the Short Physical Performance Battery score and s

Disability and marginal utility of income: evidence from hypothetical choices.

It is often assumed that disability reduces the marginal utility of income. In this article, individuals' marginal utility of income in two states-(i) paralyzed in both legs from birth and (ii) not mobility impaired at all-is measured through hypothetical choices between imagined lotteries behind a so-called veil of ignorance. The outcomes of the lotteries include both income and disability status. It is found that most people have higher marginal utility when paralyzed than when not mobility impaired at all. The two marginal utilities are evaluated at the same levels of income. Having persona

Socioeconomic mobility, metabolic health, and diet: mediation via subjective socioeconomic status.

OBJECTIVE: Socioeconomic mobility, i.e., changing socioeconomic status (SES) between adolescence and adulthood, may impact health through changing resources, social status, and health-related behaviors. This analysis examined whether subjective SES contributes to associations of mobility with metabolic health (BMI and metabolic syndrome) and unhealthy diets (fast-food consumption and sugar-sweetened beverage [SSB] consumption). METHODS: National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health data were used (n = 4132). Mobility was defined as the difference between adolescent (collected 1994

Social participation in the neighborhood community prevents onset of disability in community-dwelling older adults whose life space with activities is limited: A 2-year prospective cohort study.

AIMS: For older adults with limited life space and activity, social participation in the neighborhood community is essential to ensure social interaction and activity levels. This study examined the association between social participation in the neighborhood community and the onset of disability in older adults with different life spaces and activities. METHODS: The participants were 9513 older adults from a cohort study conducted at the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology Study of Geriatric Syndromes (NCGG-SGS). Social participation in the neighborhood community was assessed by p

Life space and mental health: a study of older community-dwelling persons in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: The ability of older people to mobilise within and outside their community is dependent on a number of factors. This study explored the relationship between spatial mobility and psychological health among older adults living in Australia. METHODS: The survey sample consisted of 260 community-dwelling men and women aged 75-80 years, who returned a postal survey measuring spatial mobility (using the Life Space Questionnaire) and psychological health (using the SF36 Health Related Quality of Life Profile). From the Life Space Questionnaire, participants were given a life-space score

Economic integration and upward mobility in Brazil.

Are cities in emerging economies poverty traps or engines of opportunity? We use 13 y of linked employer-employee data covering all formal workers in Brazil to explore the mechanisms through which agglomeration promotes mobility for initially poor workers. We find that the cities that appear to enable more upward mobility in Brazil's south are characterized by greater mixing of skilled and unskilled labor than similarly sized cities with less mobility in the north, where skilled workers disproportionately concentrate in the public sector. These findings suggest that the benefits of urbanizatio

"In Their Own Time": Parents Gently Push Their Autistic Youth Towards Independent Community Mobility and Participation.

Autistic adults have decreased independence in community mobility and driving, which is associated with decreased participation in work, education and community participation. This is the first exploration of the development of community mobility, driving and participation skills over adolescence and emerging adulthood. Interviews with 15 mothers of autistic youth, capable of independence, were qualitatively analysed using grounded theory. Four major themes emerged: mothers gently pushing, teaching, letting go and working towards hopes and dreams. These results suggest earlier intervention acr

Longitudinal Quality of Life Outcomes in Children Treated With Petrie Casting and Wide-abduction Bracing for Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease.

BACKGROUND: Petrie casting (6 wk) followed by wide-abduction bracing and weight-bearing restrictions is an established nonoperative containment treatment for Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD). Little is known about the quality-of-life impacts of this treatment. Our aim was to determine longitudinal changes to PROMIS Physical, Mental, and Social health measures during Petrie cast, abduction bracing, and weight-bearing restriction treatment. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of prospectively collected PROMIS data from 23 LCPD patients treated with Petrie casting and subsequent abduction br

Out-of-home mobility enhancement by a physiotherapist-led motivational counselling intervention among rural community-dwelling older adults 75+: the MOBILE RCT.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-home mobility is crucial for maintaining autonomy and participation in older adults and plays a key role in preventing cognitive decline, social isolation, and frailty. However, there is a notable scarcity of interventional research aimed at promoting out-of-home mobility, particularly in rural areas where environmental barriers to mobility are pronounced and older adults are at risk of limited mobility. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a physiotherapist-led motivational counselling intervention designed to enhance out-of-home mobility in older adults living

HIV risk among Australian men travelling overseas: networks and context matter.

Increasing international mobility presents a risk for communicable disease transmission. Overseas-acquired HIV infections have been increasingly observed across Australian jurisdictions. This includes a mix of men emigrating from countries with high HIV prevalence and men travelling abroad. There is currently little research exploring international mobility and HIV risk, and as a consequence the increase of men acquiring HIV while travelling overseas is poorly understood. This paper draws on data from a qualitative study exploring the risk perspectives and experiences of 14 Australian men who

University students' awareness of the social dimension of sustainable transportation: The case of Amasya/Turkey.

Promoting walking and cycling is crucial for enhancing quality of life and supporting sustainable mobility. Although the literature includes numerous studies addressing the physical and environmental dimensions of sustainable transportation, the social dimension-particularly in relation to bicycle use-has not been sufficiently explored. This gap limits the wider adoption of cycling as a mode of transport. The present study examines university students' awareness of the social dimension of sustainability, which represents a critical factor in advancing sustainable transportation. Amasya Univers

Venous Leg Ulcers: The Need to Incorporate Age-Friendly 4M's in Management.

Venous leg ulcers develop due to a complex set of conditions routed in lower extremity edema and inflammation. Even though older adults are disproportionally affected by these wounds, the guidelines discuss best practices without keeping in mind the age-friendly 4M's-what Matters Most, Mobility, Medications, and Mentation/Mood. This article reviews the management and treatment of venous leg ulcers, but with a geriatric medicine focus. Compression therapy, mobility optimization, and social isolation reduction are highlighted for our older adult population.

Life-Space mobility and clinical outcomes in COPD.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is a common experience in patients with COPD but is not captured by existing patient-reported outcomes, and its association with clinical outcomes is unknown. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled adults with stable COPD who completed the University of Alabama at Birmingham Life Space Assessment (LSA) (range: 0-120, restricted Life-Space mobility: ≤60 and a marker of social isolation in older adults); six-minute walk test (6MWT), and the University of California at San Diego Shortness of Breath Questionnaire, COPD Assessment Test, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression
