Probabilistic atlas for the language network based on precision fMRI data from >800 individuals.

Two analytic traditions characterize fMRI language research. One relies on averaging activations across individuals. This approach has limitations: because of inter-individual variability in the locations of language areas, any given voxel/vertex in a common brain space is part of the language network in some individuals but in others, may belong to a distinct network. An alternative approach relies on identifying language areas in each individual using a functional 'localizer'. Because of its greater sensitivity, functional resolution, and interpretability, functional localization is gaining

Visuospatial Neglect - a Theory-Informed Overview of Current and Emerging Strategies and a Systematic Review on the Therapeutic Use of Non-invasive Brain Stimulation.

Visuospatial neglect constitutes a supramodal cognitive deficit characterized by reduction or loss of spatial awareness for the contralesional space. It occurs in over 40% of right- and 20% of left-brain-lesioned stroke patients with lesions located mostly in parietal, frontal and subcortical brain areas. Visuospatial neglect is a multifaceted syndrome - symptoms can be divided into sensory, motor and representational neglect - and therefore requires an individually adapted diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Several models try to explain the origins of visuospatial neglect, of which the "int

Low dead-space syringes for preventing HIV among people who inject drugs: promise and barriers.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines evidence regarding the differential effects of high dead-space syringes (HDSS) and low dead-space syringes (LDSS) on HIV transmission among people who inject drugs (PWID). It also identifies areas for additional research and examines potential barriers to interventions that promote LDSS. RECENT FINDINGS: Results of laboratory experiments and cross-sectional bio-behavioral surveys provide circumstantial evidence that the probability of HIV transmission associated with sharing LDSS is less than the probability of HIV transmission associated with sharing H

Comparison of deep learning-based three-dimensional human pose estimation methods with motion capture for gesture research.

Humans often make gestures while speaking. These gestures have been extensively researched in psychology and cognitive science, revealing their functions and roles in communication. Despite being produced in three-dimensional (3D) space, gestures and gesture space have primarily been measured and analyzed using two-dimensional planes. Optical motion capture (MoCap) is commonly used for 3D gesture measurement. However, MoCap is expensive, requires a large space, and the attachment of retroreflective markers can interfere with the natural generation of gestures by the speaker. Recent advances in

Mechano-stress endorsing heterogeneous lung cancer cells migration into confined channels and investigating tumor spheroids growth of confined space migrating cells.

Cancer cells in the tumor microenvironment and in the metastatic cascade leverage their different intrinsic and extrinsic properties to overcome the confined barriers of the metastatic cascade during metastasis. Although various studies have focused on cell migration under confinement, how the heterogeneity in the stiffness levels of single lung cancer cells affects their migration into confined spaces and the growth of tumor spheroids of confined space migrating cells remains unknown. This study explores how cancer cells with varying stiffness levels steer confined spaces and form post-migrat

Pathophysiologic Spine Adaptations and Countermeasures for Prolonged Spaceflight.

Low back pain due to spaceflight is a common complaint of returning astronauts. Alterations in musculoskeletal anatomy during spaceflight and the effects of microgravity (μg) have been well-studied; however, the mechanisms behind these changes remain unclear. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has released the Human Research Roadmap to guide investigators in developing effective countermeasure strategies for the Artemis Program, as well as commercial low-orbit spaceflight. Based on the Human Research Roadmap, the existing literature was examined to determine the current understa

Cadaveric study of movement of an unstable atlanto-axial (C1/C2) cervical segment during laryngoscopy and intubation using the Airtraq(®) , Macintosh and McCoy laryngoscopes.

Concern that laryngoscopy and intubation might create or exacerbate a spinal cord injury has generated extensive research into cervical spinal movement during laryngoscopy. We performed a randomised trial on six cadavers, using three different laryngoscopes, before and after creating a type-2 odontoid peg fracture. Our primary outcome measure was the change in the space available for the spinal cord at the C1/2 segment measured by cinefluoroscopy. Tracheal intubation was performed using a minimal view of the glottis, a bougie, and manual in-line stabilisation. In a cadaveric model of type-2 od

Exposure-based treatment for co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder in veterans: The feasibility of massed models.

Exposure-based therapies are widely accepted as the gold-standard intervention for both obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite their co-occurrence, little research has explored exposure-based treatment in individuals who experience both OCD and PTSD. At an academic medical center mental health program, four different treatment approaches combining exposure and response prevention (ERP) and prolonged exposure (PE) therapies were piloted for veterans with co-occurring OCD and PTSD. We present each approach with a brief case study. Two sequential mod

Engagement with LGBTQ community moderates the association between victimization and substance use among a cohort of sexual and gender minority individuals assigned female at birth.

BACKGROUND: Research has documented higher levels of substance use among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals - particularly sexual minority women (SMW) and transgender people - than among their heterosexual and cisgender peers. Because SGM substance use is linked to stigma-based victimization, it is crucial to identify social contexts that may buffer the association between victimization and substance use among SGM. METHODS: We explored how engagement with LGBTQ-specific community influences victimization experiences and substance use among 488 SGM individuals assigned female at birt

Spatial Galloping Behavior of Iced Conductors under Multimodal Coupling.

In this study, the coupled ordinary differential equations for the galloping of the first two modes in iced bundled conductors, including in-plane, out-of-plane, and torsional directions, are derived. Furthermore, through numerical analysis, the critical conditions of this modal galloping are determined in the range of wind speed-sag parameters, and the galloping patterns and variation laws in different parameter spaces are analyzed. The parameter space is then divided into five regions according to the different galloping modes. Under the multimodal coupling mechanism of galloping, the impact

[Gut microbial dysbiosis under space environment: a review].

Unique factors in the space environment can cause dysbiosis of astronauts' gut microbiota and its metabolites, which may exert systematic physiological effects on human body. Recent progress regarding the effect of space flight/simulated space environment (SF/SPE) on the composition of gut microbiota and its metabolites was reviewed in this paper. SF/SPE may cause the increase of invasive pathogenic bacteria and the decrease of beneficial bacteria, aggravating intestinal inflammation and increasing intestinal permeability. SF/SPE may also cause the decrease of beneficial metabolites or the inc

Selfhood and inclusive publics: a critical disability lens and creative practice to ground collaborative homelessness research.

This paper explores homelessness, research and advocacy with a critical disability lens. It reflects on several years of public space research, and advocacy in national and local networks of homelessness service providers, homeless people, and activists in Johannesburg, South Africa. The paper builds on a triad of self-(an)other-collective to unpack how sacrificing aspects of the self in conditions of extreme inequality and polarization is key for building broader collectives and inclusion. Reflecting on disability as a cause and consequence of homelessness, I offer insights from within and be…

Tissue spaces are reservoirs of antigenic diversity for Trypanosoma brucei.

The protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei evades clearance by the host immune system through antigenic variation of its dense variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) coat, periodically 'switching' expression of the VSG using a large genomic repertoire of VSG-encoding genes1-6. Recent studies of antigenic variation in vivo have focused near exclusively on parasites in the bloodstream6-8, but research has shown that many, if not most, parasites reside in the interstitial spaces of tissues9-13. We sought to explore the dynamics of antigenic variation in extravascular parasite populations using VSG-seq

Virtual reality transition to underground: human responses across sequential spatial transitions.

Given the growing demand for the active utilization of underground spaces, understanding their effects on humans is crucial. However, constructing physical underground spaces for research is often costly and inflexible. In response, virtual reality (VR) provides a flexible and cost-effective alternative for simulating such environments and evaluating human responses. Yet, accurately replicating the experience of being underground in VR remains challenging. This study proposes a novel framework-Virtual Reality Transition to Underground (VRTU)-designed to stimulate the experience of descending f

Suborbital spaceflight reveals rapid changes in gene expression accompanying the transition to and from space.

Human-rated suborbital vehicles present the opportunity to conduct science during the transitions to space and back. This opportunity is enhanced by the ability to include researchers in the crew who can conduct real-time experiments in what is effectively a shirt-sleeve environment. While numerous suborbital flights have carried autonomous research payloads, suborbital vehicle systems have yet to be fully operationalized as platforms for scientists to physically conduct experiments. Therefore the present study was designed as an early step to advance this operationalization through a research

Asthenia--does it exist in space?

OBJECTIVE: First popularized as neurasthenia in the late 1800s by American George Beard, asthenia has been viewed by Russian psychologists and flight surgeons as a major problem that affects cosmonauts participating in long-duration space missions. However, there is some controversy about whether this syndrome exists in space; this controversy is attributable in part to the fact that it is not recognized in the current American psychiatric diagnostic system. METHODS: To address this issue empirically, we retrospectively examined the data from our 4 1/2-year, NASA-funded study of crew member a
