Smartphone-assisted dual-mode cyanide ion sensing in environmental and biological matrices using a triphenylamine-quinoline-conjugated chromogenic receptor.

This work presents the efficient recognition of the hazardous chemical cyanide ions (CN- ions) using a newly designed organic molecule-based fluorescent receptor, (E)-4-(4-(diphenylamino)styryl)-1-propylquinolin-1-ium (TAME). CN- ion detection occurs via nucleophilic addition to the styryl group, inducing distinct electronic perturbations as well as blocking of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process. Absorption spectral titration studies reveal a notable blue shift (517-507 nm) in the presence of CN- ions, while steady-state fluorescence measurements demonstrate significant fluoresce

Automated In-Injector Port Conversion of Aristolochic Acids to Aristolic Acids for Enhanced HPLC Fluorescence Detection.

Aristolochic acids (AAs) and the herbs containing them are recognized human carcinogens. Emerging evidence indicates that AAs are also food and environmental contaminants, posing significant risks to human health. This study developed a highly sensitive AA detection method by combining automated in-injector denitration with HPLC coupled with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD). The method converts non-fluorescing AAs into fluorescing aristolic acids (ARs) through a dithionite-mediated reaction directly within the HPLC injector port. Following validation for accuracy and precision, this method wa

A Blue-Emitting Ionic Liquid-Based Nano-Optode for Ultra-Sensitive Detection of Dextran Sulfate.

Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), a polysaccharide, can cause adverse effects such as joint pain, stiffness, and hair loss when used excessively. Rapid, accurate detection of DSS in biological samples is vital for timely clinical diagnosis and treatment decisions. However, current literature on analytical techniques for DSS detection remains limited. For this purpose, we have prepared a fluorescent, room-temperature ionic liquid, trihexyltetradecylphosphonium 2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazolate (MTNP), and its low-dimensional materials, nMTNP, and characterized them using various

Prediction of Vitamin A Concentration in Cattle Blood Based on Fluorescence Properties of Plasma Extracted by a Blood Cell Separation Filter.

In the production of highly marbled beef from Japanese Black cattle, fattening management involves reducing blood vitamin A (VA) concentrations during the feeding period to enhance marbling. To avoid excessive restriction, regular blood testing is essential, and there is a strong demand for simple and rapid measurement methods. In this study, we replaced centrifugation with a plasma filter that has a blood cell separation function, and plasma was absorbed onto a glass fiber filter for fluorescence measurements to estimate VA concentrations. The fluorescence intensity of VA on the glass fiber f

An ingenious technique based on the usage of fluorone-based dye; pyrosin B in prucalopride assay in different matrices through an "on-off" dye native fluorescence probe.

Prucalopride (PCD), is a modern medication approved by the United States in 2018 to alleviate constipation caused by motility issues. PCD demonstrates a strong affinity and selectivity toward the 5-HT4 receptor. The study here introduces a feasible, direct, non-extractive, and affordable pathway for PCD analytical tracking. The fluorimetric study is based on the on-off effect on the emission amplitude of fluorone-based dye (pyrosin B). In a one-pot experiment, the complex between PCD and pyrosin B is formed instantly in an acidic medium. Correlation between decreased pyrosin B emission and PCD

Near-infrared Rhodols-based fluorescent probe with large Stokes shift for tracking of H2S in food spoilage and living cells.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as a biomarker signaling gas, is not only susceptible to food spoilage, but also plays a key function in many biological processes. In this work, an activated near infrared (NIR) H2S fluorescent probe was designed and synthesized with quinoline-conjugated Rhodols dye as fluorophore skeleton and a dinitrophenyl group as the responsive moiety. Due to the quenching effect of dinitrophenyl group and the closed-loop structure of Rhodols fluorophore, probe itself has a very weak absorption and fluorescence background signal. After the H2S-induced thiolysis reaction, the probe

Nitroxyl donating and visualization with a coumarin-based fluorescence probe.

Nitroxyl (HNO), the single-electron reduction product of nitric oxide (NO), has attracted great interest in the treatment of congestive heart failure in clinical trials. In this paper, we describe the first coumarin-based compound N-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-6-sulfonamide (CD1) as a dualfunctional HNO donor, which can release both an HNO signaling molecule and a fluorescent reporter. Under physiological conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 °C), the CD1 HNO donor can readily decompose with a half-life of ∼90 min. The corresponding stoichiometry HNO from the CD1 donor was confirmed using both Vitamin B12 a

A benzothiophene-based fluorescent probe with dual-functional to polarity and cyanide for practical applications in living cells and real water samples.

Polarity is a significant intracellular environmental parameter associated with cancer, while cyanide (CN-) is known to be highly toxic to humans. In this work, we designed a dual-functional fluorescent probe (TPABT) for simultaneous detection of polarity and CN-. As a polarity sensor, the probe exhibits NIR emission at 766 nm in 1,4-dioxane (non-polar solvent), whose emission intensity is 71-fold stronger than that in water (polar solvent). Meanwhile, the fluorescence intensity and quantum yield are linearly related to solvent polarity, confirming the polarity response ability of TPABT. For c

Proximity Estimation and Quantification of Ionizing Radiation-induced DNA Lesions in Aqueous Media using Fluorescence Spectroscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Research has unveiled the remarkable properties of extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), particularly in promoting wound healing, aiding re-epithelialization, revitalizing aging skin, and inhibiting hyperpigmentation. However, investigations into the potential of small extracellular vesicles from umbilical cord-derived MSCs (UC-MSC-sEVs) in reducing scarring and preventing hyperpigmentation remain limited. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impact of UC-MSC-sEVs on the synthesis of the skin's extracellular matrix (ECM) and pigmentation usin

N-doped carbon nanospheres as selective fluorescent probes for mercury detection in contaminated aqueous media: chemistry, fluorescence probing, cell line patterning, and liver tissue interaction.

A precise nano-scale biosensor was developed here to detect Hg2+ in aqueous media. Nitrogen-doped carbon nanospheres (NCS) created from the pyrolysis of melamine-formaldehyde resin were characterized by FESEM, XRD, Raman spectra, EDS, PL, UV-vis spectra, and N2 adsorption-desorption, and were used as a highly selective and sensitive probe for detecting Hg2+ in aqueous media. The sensitivity of NCS to Hg2+ was evaluated by photoluminescence intensity fluctuations under fluorescence emission in the vicinity of 390 nm with a λexc of 350 nm. The fluorescence intensity of the NCS probe weakened in

Sensing of organophosphorus pesticides by fluorescent complexes based on purine-hydrazone receptor and copper (II) and its application in living-cells imaging.

In this study, we used purine hydrazone derivatives and coumarin aldehyde to synthesize a novel fluorescent sensor (EDTP) by Schiff base reaction, which exhibited significant selective fluorescence quenching of Cu2+, and a distinct change from brilliant yellow to red is present along with the solution color. The detection limit of EDTP for Cu2+ was 109.52 nM. Job's plot experiment, density flooding theory (DFT) and 1H NMR titration experiments revealed the possible binding mechanism of EDTP to Cu2+, the probe EDTP could achieve highly detection of Cu2+ through forming a 1:1 complex. Surface Functionalised Optical Fibre for Detection of Hydrogen Sulphide.

Dysregulated production of hydrogen sulphide in the human body has been associated with various diseases including cancer, underlining the importance of accurate detection of this molecule. Here, we report the detection of hydrogen sulphide using fluorescence-emission enhancement of two 1,8-naphthalimide fluorescent probes with an azide moiety in position 4. One probe, serving as a control, featured a methoxyethyl moiety through the imide to evaluate its effectiveness for hydrogen sulphide detection, while the other probe was modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) to enable direc

Water-Soluble Single-Benzene Chromophores: Excited State Dynamics and Fluorescence Detection.

Two water-soluble single-benzene-based chromophores, 2,5-di(azetidine-1-yl)-tereph- thalic acid (DAPA) and its disodium carboxylate (DAP-Na), were conveniently obtained. Both chromophores preserved moderate quantum yields in a wide range of polar and protonic solvents. Spectroscopic studies demonstrated that DAPA exhibited red luminescence as well as large Stokes shift (>200 nm) in aqueous solutions. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra illustrated quadrupolar DAPA usually involved the formation of an intramolecular charge transfer state. Its Frank−Condon state could be rapidly relaxed to

One step synthesis of ultra-high quantum yield fluorescent carbon dots for "on-off-on" detection of Hg2+ and biothiols.

In this paper, the carbon dots (CDs) with strong blue fluorescence were synthesized through hydrothermal method, which using folic acid, ammonium citrate and ethylenediamine as precursors. The prepared CDs with a high absolute quantum yield of 81.94% and showed excellent stability in high concentration salt solution and different pH conditions. With the addition of Hg2+, the signal of CDs was selectively quenched. At the same time, the CDs-Hg2+ system could be recovered after the introduction of biothiols. Moreover, the fluorescence of CDs showed a good linear relationship with Hg2+ (1-15 µM),

Fluorescence-based techniques for the detection of the oligomeric status of proteins: implication in amyloidogenic diseases.

Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) have captured attention in the last couple of decades due to their functional roles despite a lack of specific structure. Moreover, these proteins are found to be highly aggregation prone depending on the mutational and environmental changes to which they are subjected. The aggregation of such proteins either in the intracellular context or extracellular matrix is associated with several adverse pathophysiological conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases, Spinocerebellar ataxia, and Type-II diabetes. Interestingly, it has b

Ultra-long room-temperature phosphorescent carbon dots: pH sensing and dual-channel detection of tetracyclines.

Currently, the synthesis and applications of room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials are promising, but challenging. Herein, a kind of ultra-long phosphorescent carbon dots (P-CDs) were rapidly prepared through a facile microwave-directed method. In particular, the yellow-green phosphorescence of the P-CDs was observed for up to 9 s, and their fluorescence and phosphorescence were observed at 418 nm and 525 nm, respectively, using the same excitation at 354 nm. Moreover, the RTP intensity of the P-CDs gradually decreased with the increasing pH because of the protonation-dissociated hyd
