Correlation of otologic complaints in soldiers with speech disorders after traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To determine the prevalence of otologic complaints in subjects with dysphonia and traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a sample population of the US Army. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: A total of 292 subjects were identified with a new diagnosis of voice disorder during a 3.5-year period at three large military medical centers. Of them, 70 subjects were also identified with TBI and had no history of dysphonia before this time period. In those with voice disorders and TBI, documentation of hearing complaints, hearing loss, tinnitus, or vertigo was recorded. T

Treatment intensity in everyday clinical management of speech sound disorders in Hong Kong.

Much evidence supports the efficacy of different treatment approaches for speech sound disorders (SSD) in children. Minimal research in the field has been conducted using treatment intensity as a research variable. This study examined the current practice of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in Hong Kong regarding the treatment intensity prescribed to children with SSD and potential factors that were associated with the intensity. Participants were 102 SLPs working in different settings in Hong Kong who completed an online questionnaire. SLPs who had a heavier caseload offered significantly

Literacy outcomes of children with early childhood speech sound disorders: impact of endophenotypes.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate that early childhood speech sound disorders (SSD) and later school-age reading, written expression, and spelling skills are influenced by shared endophenotypes that may be in part genetic. METHOD: Children with SSD and their siblings were assessed at early childhood (ages 4-6 years) and followed at school age (7-12 years). The relationship of shared endophenotypes with early childhood SSD and school-age outcomes and the shared genetic influences on these outcomes were examined. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling demonstrated that oral motor skills, phonological awa

Nonspeech oral motor treatment issues related to children with developmental speech sound disorders.

PURPOSE: This article examines nonspeech oral motor treatments (NSOMTs) in the population of clients with developmental speech sound disorders. NSOMTs are a collection of nonspeech methods and procedures that claim to influence tongue, lip, and jaw resting postures; increase strength; improve muscle tone; facilitate range of motion; and develop muscle control. In the case of developmental speech sound disorders, NSOMTs are employed before or simultaneous with actual speech production treatment. METHOD: First, NSOMTs are defined for the reader, and there is a discussion of NSOMTs under the cat

The genetic bases of speech sound disorders: evidence from spoken and written language.

The purpose of this article is to review recent findings suggesting a genetic susceptibility for speech sound disorders (SSD), the most prevalent communication disorder in early childhood. The importance of genetic studies of SSD and the hypothetical underpinnings of these genetic findings are reviewed, as well as genetic associations of SSD with other language and reading disabilities. The authors propose that many genes contribute to SSD. They further hypothesize that some genes contribute to SSD disorders alone, whereas other genes influence both SSD and other written and spoken language di

Speech disorders in children treated for posterior fossa tumours: ataxic and developmental features.

The oromotor and speech abilities of 19 children (14 boys and five girls) who had been treated for posterior fossa tumour were evaluated using three assessment procedures. All subjects completed the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment and the Fisher-Logemann Test of Articulation Competence. Perceptual analyses were also performed on the subjects' connected speech samples. Based on the three assessment procedures, 11 of the 19 tumour subjects were judged to be speech disordered. The 11 speech-disordered subjects were then compared to a control group matched for age and sex to determine the nature an

[Psychiatric manifestations in children with speech disorders with and without minimal brain dysfunction].

Several studies have shown not only that children with psychiatric problems are having more speech and language disorders than control groups. Moreover it has been shown that other developmental disorders are more common in groups with speech and language disorders. In a study in Munich including all children with diagnosis of specific developmental disorders of speech and language seen in our outpatient department from 1981 to 1986 we found significantly more psychiatric diagnoses in a subgroup of children with MBD. This was proved for the boys only however not for the smaller group of girls.

Speech pattern disorders in verbally fluent individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a machine learning analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in verbally fluent individuals based on speech patterns in examiner-patient dialogues is challenging because speech-related symptoms are often subtle and heterogeneous. This study aimed to identify distinctive speech characteristics associated with ASD by analyzing recorded dialogues from the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2). METHODS: We analyzed examiner-participant dialogues from ADOS-2 Module 4 and extracted 40 speech-related features categorized into intonation, volume, rate, pauses, spectral characteristics, chroma, a

A Modeling-Guided Case Study of Disordered Speech in Minimally Verbal Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Purpose Understanding what limits speech development in minimally verbal (MV) children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is important for providing highly effective targeted therapies. This preliminary investigation explores the extent to which developmental speech deficits predicted by Directions Into Velocities of Articulators (DIVA), a computational model of speech production, exemplify real phenotypes. Method Implementing a motor speech disorder in DIVA predicted that speech would become highly variable within and between tokens, while implementing a motor speech plus an auditory process

Characterizing intonation deficit in motor speech disorders: an autosegmental-metrical analysis of spontaneous speech in hypokinetic dysarthria, ataxic dysarthria, and foreign accent syndrome.

PURPOSE: The autosegmental-metrical (AM) framework represents an established methodology for intonational analysis in unimpaired speaker populations but has found little application in describing intonation in motor speech disorders (MSDs). This study compared the intonation patterns of unimpaired participants (CON) and those with Parkinson's disease (PD), ataxic dysarthria (AT), and foreign accent syndrome (FAS) to evaluate the approach's potential for distinguishing types of MSDs from each other and from unimpaired speech. METHOD: Spontaneous speech from 8 PD, 8 AT, 4 FAS, and 10 CON speake

Validity and Reliability of the Turkish Version of the Dynamic Evaluation of Motor Speech Skill (DEMSS-TR) Test for Children With Speech Sound Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a complex motor speech disorder that requires careful differential diagnosis, particularly in languages where validated diagnostic tools are lacking. The Dynamic Evaluation of Motor Speech Skill (DEMSS) is a widely used tool for identifying CAS, but a Turkish version had not yet been developed. AIMS: This study aimed to adapt DEMSS into Turkish (DEMSS-TR) and evaluate its psychometric properties for use with Turkish-speaking children with speech sound disorders (SSD). METHODS: Eighty-two monolingual Turkish-speaking children aged 3;0 to 6;11 w

Parental Perspectives and Experiences of Working With Speech and Language Therapists to Support Home Practice for Their Child With a Speech Sound Disorder: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorder (SSD) is broadly defined as difficulty producing speech sounds in childhood. It can have a lasting impact on academic outcomes and well-being, making effective early intervention vital. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) consider parental involvement-particularly supporting their child with home practice-as essential to a child's progress. Relationships between SLTs and parents are known to facilitate this engagement. However, there is a significant gap in the literature regarding parents' perspectives, and little is known about what parents perceive to be

Functional speech disorder in a patient with X-linked adrenomyeloneuropathy: a diagnostic challenge.

We describe a 54-year-old female carrier of X-linked adrenomyeloneuropathy presenting with episodic stuttering triggered by mild exertion. Despite pre-existing neurological disease, normal neuroimaging, clinical inconsistency, distractibility, and rapid response to respiratory-based therapy supported a functional speech disorder. This case emphasizes the importance of recognizing functional speech disorders in patients with other comorbid neurological conditions.

The Relationship between Speech Sound Disorder and Cortical Auditory Evoked Potential.

INTRODUCTION: Speech sound disorder (SSD) is a speech and language disorder associated with difficulties in motor production, perception, and phonological representation of sounds and speech segments. Since auditory perception has a fundamental role in forming and organizing sound representation for its recognition, studies that evaluate the cortical processing of sounds are required. Thus, the present study aimed to verify the relation between SSD severity measured by the percentage of correct consonants (PCCs) with the cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) using speech stimulus. Learner training for phonetic transcription of typical and/or disordered speech: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Phonetic transcription is a core skill of speech and language therapists/pathologists (SLT/Ps) for clinical assessment of speech sounds and/or errors, and linguists for investigation of phonetic phenomena in various languages; hence, it is included in the curriculum of the corresponding degree programme. Many experts and course instructors have discussed their opinions on different aspects of phonetic transcription teaching and/or reported their own training programmes. However, no review has systematically summarized the types of expert recommendations and training methodology rep

Speech sound disorder or DLD (phonology)? Towards a consensus agreement on terminology.

BACKGROUND: The publication of phase 2 of the CATALISE project in 2017 clarified terminology for children with developmental language disorder (DLD) or delay but unintentionally muddied the water for children with unintelligible speech. A diagnostic label of DLD (phonology) indicates poor prognosis and phonological disorder that persists into middle childhood. However, in contrast to other diagnostic labels that fall under the overarching term of speech sound disorder (SSD), DLD (phonology) does not elucidate the characteristics of the child's speech nor does it point us in the direction of ap
