INTRODUCTION: The study investigates the psychometric properties of the GOS.SP.ASS. '98 - Italian version protocol for assessing speech in individuals with clefts. Intra- and inter-rater reliability, concurrent validity, criterion validity, and responsiveness of the protocol were examined across specific parameters: hypernasality, hyponasality, nasal emission, turbulence, intelligibility, acceptability, and consonant production.
METHODS: The retrospective cross-sectional observational study involved 45 Italian-speaking children with repaired cleft lip and/or palate, evaluated at ages 3 (n = 1

The band importance function (BIF) quantifies the contribution of each frequency band to the intelligibility of speech and is a key element of the speech intelligibility index. The BIF depends on the type of speech material and speaker characteristics. Several BIFs exist, but they do not cover all test materials used in audiology. This study aimed to determine the BIF for the Dutch digits-in-noise (DIN) test, a widely used speech-in-noise measure. Twenty young adults with normal hearing completed a speech recognition task using Dutch DIN triplets presented at multiple signal-to-noise ratios (S

The occurrence of cleft lip and palate anomaly can impact on an affected individual's quality of life. Cleft of the palate particularly significantly affects the production of speech. This article aims to describe the speech errors following palatoplasty procedures observed from cleft centres within Nigeria. Ability to produce high pressure sounds, frequencies of speech errors and speech intelligibility were analysed from data collated from five cleft centres. The speech services in these centres were provided in partnership with Smile Train, a nongovernmental organization based in the United

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of sentence length on intelligibility in two groups of older children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.
METHOD: Nine children diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) and eight children diagnosed with Down syndrome (DS), between the ages of 8 and 17 years, repeated sentences varying in length from two to seven words. Three hundred forty adult listeners (20 listeners per child) provided orthographic transcriptions of children's speech, which were used to calculate intelligibility scores.
RESULTS: There was a significant main effect of

Acceptability and intelligibility of three groups of alaryngeal speakers were examined: four oesophageal speakers, four tracheo-oesophageal puncture speakers using a tracheostoma valve and four tracheo-oesophageal puncture speakers using digital occlusion. Speakers were video-taped producing samples from the Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech, in addition to a section of spontaneous speech. Three groups of listeners were used: nine speech and language therapists, five ENT surgeons and ten naïve listeners. Specific variables including fluency, rate, quality, intensity, extraneou

This study investigated the acoustic basis of within-speaker, across-utterance variation in sentence intelligibility for 12 speakers with dysarthria secondary to Parkinson's disease (PD). Acoustic measures were also obtained for 12 healthy controls for comparison to speakers with PD. Speakers read sentences using their typical speech style. Acoustic measures of speech rate, articulatory rate, fundamental frequency, sound pressure level and F2 interquartile range (F2 IQR) were obtained. A group of listeners judged sentence intelligibility using a computerized visual-analog scale. Relationships

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the most efficient approaches to measuring the intelligibility of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) when considering the estimation method, listener experience, number of listeners, number of sentences, and the ways these factors may interact.
METHOD: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and inexperienced listeners estimated the intelligibility of people with and without PD using orthographic transcription or a visual analog scale (VAS). Intelligibility estimates were based on 11 Speech Intelligibility Test sentences. We simulated all comb

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive debilitating neurological disease. ALS disturbs the quality of life by affecting speech, swallowing and free mobility of the arms without affecting intellectual function. It is therefore of significance to improve intelligibility and quality of speech sounds, especially for ALS patients with slowly progressive courses. Currently, however, there is no effective or established approach to improve speech disorder caused by ALS. We investigated a surgical procedure to improve speech disorder for some patients with neuromuscular diseases with vel

While eye movements have been shown to track the speech envelope, it is unknown whether this reflects a hard-wired mechanism or one shaped by (lifetime) audiovisual experience. Further, questions remain about whether ocular tracking is modulated by speech intelligibility and which brain regions drive these synchronized eye movements. Here, we investigate ocular speech tracking in 47 (20 male), blindfolded early blind, late blind, and sighted individuals using magnetoencephalography and source-reconstructed oculomotor signals while participants listened to narrative speech of varying intelligib

The speech characteristics, oromotor function and speech intelligibility of a group of children treated for cerebellar tumour (CT) was investigated perceptually. Assessment of these areas was performed on 11 children treated for CT with dysarthric speech as well as 21 non-neurologically impaired controls matched for age and sex to obtain a comprehensive perceptual profile of their speech and oromotor mechanism. Contributing to the perception of dysarthria were a number of deviant speech dimensions including imprecision of consonants, hoarseness and decreased pitch variation, as well as a reduc

The neural mechanisms underlying the ability of human listeners to recognize speech in the presence of background noise are still imperfectly understood. However, there is mounting evidence that the medial olivocochlear system plays an important role, via efferents that exert a suppressive effect on the response of the basilar membrane. The current paper presents a computer modeling study that investigates the possible role of this activity on speech intelligibility in noise. A model of auditory efferent processing [Ferry, R. Speech perception difficulties are common among elderlies; yet the underlying neural mechanisms are still poorly understood. New empirical evidence suggesting that brain senescence may be an important contributor to these difficulties has challenged the traditional view that peripheral hearing loss was the main factor in the etiology of these difficulties. Here, we investigated the relationship between structural and functional brain senescence and speech perception skills in aging. Following audiometric evaluations, participants underwent MRI while performing a speech perception task at diffe

One thousand forty two tonal and speech audiograms are compared to the results of Jerger's speech audiometry (Synthetic Sentence Identification). In older subjects (more than 50 years) with a normal PTA or with a high frequency hearing loss, the speech intelligibility is better in a silent than in a noisy environment where it is a function of the Speech reception threshold. This difference is much smaller in younger individuals. In subjects with a horizontal Pure Tone Audiogram (PTA) (between 20 and 60 dB) the speech intelligibility is almost the same in a silent or a noisy environment for bot

BACKGROUND: The speech intelligibility of children with dysarthria and cerebral palsy has been observed to increase following therapy focusing on respiration and phonation.
AIMS: To determine if speech intelligibility change following intervention is associated with change in acoustic measures of voice.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: We recorded 16 young people with cerebral palsy and dysarthria (nine girls; mean age 14 years, SD = 2; nine spastic type, two dyskinetic, four mixed; one Worster-Drought) producing speech in two conditions (single words, connected speech) twice before and twice after the

This study aimed to investigate integration of alternating speech, a stimulus which classically produces a V-shaped speech intelligibility function with minimum at 2-6 Hz in typical-hearing (TH) listeners. We further studied how degraded speech impacts intelligibility across alternating rates (2, 4, 8, and 32 Hz) using vocoded speech, either in the right ear or bilaterally, to simulate single-sided deafness with a cochlear implant (SSD-CI) and bilateral CIs (BiCI), respectively. To assess potential cortical signatures of across-ear integration, we recorded activity in the bilateral auditory co

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: For children with speech disorders related to cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP±L), effective communication presents significant challenges. Listeners often form judgments based on the speech signal, contributing to stigmatization and negative stereotyping. When a child also has a cleft lip, perceptions may be further influenced. Limited research has explored peer attitudes towards individuals with CP±L using audiovisual stimuli. This study aimed to examine peer attitudes of children towards children with CP±L, analyzing how these attitudes vary based on auditory,

During conversations in the presence of other competing talkers, multiple speech streams compete for listeners' attentional focus. Listeners must segregate speech streams, and selectively attend to the target talker while filtering out irrelevant speech. Research on value-driven attention suggests that perceptual and attentional processes are biased by prior rewarding experiences with stimuli-that is, high-valued stimuli win attentional competition. However, it remains unknown whether such effects generalize to speech perception in multitalker environments. Here, the present study investigated

BACKGROUND: The long-term effect of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on dysarthria can be detrimental. A transient beneficial effect of low-frequency stimulation (LFS) has been reported.
OBJECTIVE: to investigate if the magnitude of dysarthria could predict the effect of LFS on speech in STN-DBS PD patients and to verify whether the benefit is maintained over time.
METHODS: a cohort study, comparing 10 PD patients with severe speech impairment (MDS-UPDRS item 3.1 ≥ 3) with 10 PD patients with mild speech impairment (MDS-UPDRS item 3.1 ≤ 2), all submitted to STN-DBS. Patie

Humans often communicate and learn in noisy, complex listening environments. Here, we investigated the effects of spatial hearing and semantic context cues on speech intelligibility and listening effort in young adults with typical hearing. The listening task included conditions in which target speech and speech maskers were either spatially co-located or separated. Target sentences were either semantically coherent or anomalous, while the masker comprised a mixture of two coherent sentences. Results showed higher speech intelligibility in spatially separated than co-located conditions, demons
