Colonic perfusion studies in 10 southern Indian patients with tropical sprue and nine matched healthy adults revealed a defect of water and sodium absorption from the colon in sprue. Subcellular biochemical features of a naturally occurring enteropathy in the dog resembling chronic tropical sprue in human beings were examined. The ultrastructure of the jejunal mucosa obtained by peroral biopsy from 7 control subjects and 12 patients with tropical sprue was studied. Morphometric techniques were used in the evaluation of lymphocyte morphology and activity in tropical sprue. jejunal biopsies from control subjects (8), patients with epidemic disease (7), patients with endemic disease (11), and subjects who had recovered from sprue (4) were analyzed blindly.
