Impact of Chloride Impurities on the Corrosion Behavior of Stainless Steel in Molten Alkali Carbonate Salts for Concentrated Solar Power Systems.

This study clarifies the catalytic role of chloride ions on the corrosion performance of SS316L alloy immersed in molten LiNaK carbonate salt at 700 °C. Accordingly, isothermal static immersion corrosion tests were systematically conducted under different experimental conditions. Our results revealed that the presence of Cl significantly accelerates the corrosion process: the rate constant of the corroded samples increased from 11.3 × 10-2 mg/cm2 to 13.8 × 10-2 mg/cm2 with the addition of Cl. Continuous migration of Cl2 and volatile metal chlorides leads to the formation of obvious pores, tran

A Tensionable Suture-based Cerclage Is an Alternative to Stainless Steel Cerclage Fixation for Stabilization of a Humeral Osteotomy During Shoulder Arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Fixation of periprosthetic humeral fractures is most commonly obtained with steel-based wires or cables; however, disadvantages with these constructs are numerous. Suture-based cerclages offer the advantage of easy handling, less radiographic interference, and risk of metallosis, as well as decreased risk of cutting into the soft humeral bone. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare a suture-based cerclage to a stainless steel wire cerclage (SSWC) for stabilization of the humerus during shoulder arthroplasty. METHODS: In part I of the study, SSWC fixation was compare…

Evaluation of the Pulmonary Toxicity of a Fume Generated from a Nickel-, Copper-Based Electrode to be Used as a Substitute in Stainless Steel Welding.

Epidemiology has indicated a possible increase in lung cancer among stainless steel welders. Chromium (Cr) is a primary component of stainless steel welding fume. There is an initiative to develop alternative welding consumables [nickel (Ni)- and copper (Cu)-based alloys] that do not contain Cr. No study has been performed to evaluate the toxicity of fumes generated from Ni- and Cu-based consumables. Dose-response and time-course effects on lung toxicity of a Ni- and Cu-based welding fume (Ni-Cu WF) were examined using an in vivo and in vitro bioassay, and compared with two other well-characte…

Cell recovery and DNA extraction methods skew relative abundance estimations of foodborne pathogens and spoilage organisms on stainless steel surfaces.

UNLABELLED: Amplicon sequencing investigations of surface microbiota in food facilities often report the relative abundance of bacteria and fungi. However, physiological differences among cell types can result in variable cell recovery and DNA yields, thereby skewing relative abundance estimates. Here, we evaluated (i) variations in cell recovery among different bacterial and fungal species after surface swabbing and (ii) the impact of DNA extraction protocols on relative abundance estimates from artificially inoculated stainless steel surfaces. Our results showed that Escherichia coli (Gram-n…

Cytotoxicity of Metal Ions Released from NiTi and Stainless Steel Orthodontic Appliances, Part 1: Surface Morphology and Ion Release Variations.

Despite numerous studies on ion release from orthodontic appliances, no clear conclusions can be drawn due to complex interrelations of multiple factors. Therefore, as the first part of a comprehensive investigation of cytotoxicity of eluted ions, the objective of this study was to analyze four parts of a fixed orthodontic appliance. Specifically, NiTi archwires and stainless steel (SS) brackets, bands, and ligatures were immersed in artificial saliva and studied for morphological and chemical changes after 3-, 7-, and 14-day immersion, using the SEM/EDX technique. Ion release profiles were an…

Construction of multi-component covalent organic framework coated stainless steel fiber for efficient microextraction of psychiatric drugs: experiments and clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Quetiapine (QTP) and clozapine (CLZ) are widely used antipsychotic drugs to treat psychotic symptoms. However, their narrow therapeutic window and the potential risk of severe side effects necessitate close monitoring of blood concentrations. Current therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) methods are still limited by operational complexity, loss of trace components, and potential instrument contamination. This study proposed a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coated with a multi-component covalent organic framework (COF TAB-DHTA-DMTP), aiming to achieve highly efficient extracti

Multi-Modal Physics-Informed Neural Network for Single-Track Geometry Prediction in Powder-Bed Arc Additive Manufacturing of 316L Stainless Steel.

This study presents a methodology for predicting the geometric features of single tracks of 316L stainless steel produced by Powder-Bed Arc Additive Manufacturing (PBAAM) from four independent process parameters using a multi-modal Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN). PBAAM shares the same powder-deposition and layering scheme as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) but uses a low-current micro-TIG arc rather than a laser as the heat source. A multi-task PINN architecture was developed that simultaneously predicts five geometric features measured from two imaging modalities (top-view and side-vie…
