Occurrence of paresthesia after dental local anesthetic administration in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested that the likelihood of paresthesia may depend on the local anesthetic used. The purpose of this study was to determine if the type of local anesthetic administered had any effect on reports of paresthesia in dentistry in the United States. METHODS: The authors obtained reports of paresthesia involving dental local anesthetics during the period from November 1997 through August 2008 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System. They used chi(2) analysis to compare expected frequencies, on the basis of U.S. local anesthetic

Counselling patients with hypodontia.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this article is to outline the implications that a diagnosis of severe hypodontia can have on a family. This should help dentists to provide effective counselling for such patients. We will discuss the dental, psycho-social, medical, functional, educational and financial implications that this diagnosis can bring. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hypodontia is a common clinical condition encountered by general dental practitioners, so effective counselling of patients affected by this condition will help a family prepare for the implications of this diagnosis and help to improve pat

The relationship between body system-based chronic conditions and dental utilization for Medicaid-enrolled children: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dental care is the most common unmet health care need for children with chronic conditions. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that not all children with chronic conditions encounter difficulties accessing dental care. The goals of this study are to evaluate dental care use for Medicaid-enrolled children with chronic conditions and to identify the subgroups of children with chronic conditions that are the least likely to use dental care services. METHODS: This study focused on children with chronic conditions ages 3-14 enrolled in the Iowa Medicaid Program in 2005 and 2006. The

Social inequality and discontinuation of orthodontic treatment: is there a link?

The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of social inequality on the likelihood of patients discontinuing orthodontic treatment, and to determine which, if any, indicators of social inequality are of greater relevance. In this retrospective study of English and Welsh General Dental Services (GDS) cases, consecutive 'discontinued' cases collected at the Dental Practice Board (DPB) during 1990-91, were compared for age, treatment modality, and measures of social inequality, with a 2 per cent sample of cases contemporaneously submitted as 'complete'. Three deprivation indices, and o

Teeth-GS: Gaussian Splatting Diffusion with enamel reflectance prior for single-image tooth crown reconstruction.

High-fidelity 3D reconstruction of tooth crown surfaces is foundational to modern digital dentistry. Compared with intra-oral scanning (IOS) systems that require specialized hardware and may still miss fine occlusal structures under clinical lighting limitations, single RGB image-based reconstruction offers a cost-effective and more accessible alternative. However, existing methods decouple surface normal estimation from the fundamental physics governing light-enamel interactions, which consequently hinders the recovery of fine-scale surface topographies, especially occlusal fissures and pits.
