The influence of stereotypical beliefs, participant gender, and survivor weight on sexual assault response.

The present study explored the influence of survivor weight and participant gender, rape myth acceptance, and antifat attitudes on perceptions of sexual assault. Using an online survey tool, a community sample of 413 adult Canadian residents reviewed a hypothetical sexual assault scenario and completed a series of evaluations and attitudinal questionnaires. Generalized linear model analyses revealed that participants were more likely to hold the survivor responsible, excuse the perpetrator's actions, and respond more negatively toward the survivor and more positively toward the perpetrator whe

Do Stereotypic Images in Video Games Affect Attitudes and Behavior? Adolescents' Perspectives.

This study examined adolescents' attitudes about video games along with their self-reported play frequency. Ninth and eleventh grade students (N = 361), approximately evenly divided by grade and gender, were surveyed about whether video games have stereotypic images, involve harmful consequences or affect one's attitudes, whether game playing should be regulated by parents or the government, and whether game playing is a personal choice. Adolescents who played video games frequently showed decreased concern about the effects that games with negatively stereotyped images may have on the players

Ambient belonging: how stereotypical cues impact gender participation in computer science.

People can make decisions to join a group based solely on exposure to that group's physical environment. Four studies demonstrate that the gender difference in interest in computer science is influenced by exposure to environments associated with computer scientists. In Study 1, simply changing the objects in a computer science classroom from those considered stereotypical of computer science (e.g., Star Trek poster, video games) to objects not considered stereotypical of computer science (e.g., nature poster, phone books) was sufficient to boost female undergraduates' interest in computer sci

The motivation of stereotypic and repetitive behavior: examination of construct validity of the motivation assessment scale.

Construct validity of the Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS) (Durand, Crimmins, The Motivation Assessment Scale 1988) was studied using Rasch analysis data from 67 children (246 MASs), with dual diagnosis of autism and intellectual disability or with intellectual disability only. Results failed to support the proposed unidimensional construct or the original 4-factor structure. Some motivators appear to form a unidimensional construct: "to gain attention", "to gain a tangible object", and "to escape". There was evidence that sensory stimulation represents a different construct. Children with in

Stereotypic behaviour in the deer mouse: pharmacological validation and relevance for obsessive compulsive disorder.

Stereotypy is an important manifestation of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD involves disturbed serotonin and dopamine pathways, and demonstrates a selective response to serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRI), with limited to no response to noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (NRI). Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) engage in various spontaneous stereotypic behaviours, including somersaulting, jumping and pattern running, and has to date not been explored for possible relevance for OCD. We studied the population diversity of spontaneous stereotypy in these animals, followed by asse

Behavior-related alterations of striatal neurochemistry in a mouse model of stereotyped movement disorder.

Motor stereotypy is a common component of several developmental, genetic, and neuropsychiatric disorders. In animals, these behaviors can be induced or attenuated via pharmacological manipulation of specific neural loci comprising cortico basal ganglia-cortical feedback circuits, including the striatum. The present study employed the deer mouse model of spontaneous and persistent stereotypy to assess the involvement of several endogenous neurotransmitters and neuromodulators in mediating the expression of the stereotypic behaviors (i.e., repetitive hindlimb jumping) exhibited by these mice. Susceptibility and resilience to memory aging stereotypes: education matters more than age.

The authors examined whether the memory performance of young, middle-aged, and older adults would be influenced by stereotype versus counterstereotype information about age differences on a memory task. One hundred forty-nine adults from a probability sample were randomly assigned to a control group or to age-stereotype conditions. As predicted, counterstereotype information was related to higher recall compared to stereotype and control groups. This was true across all age groups, but only for those with more education. Both stereotype and counterstereotype information were related to lower r

Stereotypic and specific elements of the human colonic response to Entamoeba histolytica and Shigella flexneri.

The clinical presentations of bacillary dysentery caused by shigella, and amoebic dysentery caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, can be indistinguishable, with both organisms causing colonic mucosal damage and ulceration. However, the two organisms are quite distinct, and have very different pathogenic mechanisms. This raises the fundamental question of whether the similar clinical manifestations reflect a stereotypic response of the human gut to mucosal injury, or whether there are differences at the molecular level in the host response to individual gut pathogens. [Effect of forced swimming on the memory track retention in mice with various behavioral stereotypes].

The effects of forced swimming on retrieval of the passive avoidance during its extinction were found to depend on aggressive and submissive behavior. In mice without generated behavioral stereotypes, swim stress applied before or after training stabilized retention of the memory trace retrieval. The similar improved influence of forced swimming on memory storage is revealed in submissive, but not aggressive mice. The increase of resistance against extinction under the swim stress can be connected to facilitation of emotional processes.

Personality and stereotype in osteogenesis imperfecta: behavioral phenotype or response to life's hard challenges?

Fifty-five adults with osteogenesis imperfecta [OI] types III and IV were interviewed to chronicle their medical, personal, and social experiences in living with OI. Subjects were recruited through the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, through physician referrals, and through other persons with OI. One purpose of the research was to examine the stereotypes of high intelligence and euphoric personality often attributed to persons with OI, and to explore whether these characteristics might constitute a behavioral phenotype. Participants were observed by the researcher to be characteristically

Stereotyped and specific gene expression programs in human innate immune responses to bacteria.

The innate immune response is crucial for defense against microbial pathogens. To investigate the molecular choreography of this response, we carried out a systematic examination of the gene expression program in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells responding to bacteria and bacterial products. We found a remarkably stereotyped program of gene expression induced by bacterial lipopolysaccharide and diverse killed bacteria. An intricately choreographed expression program devoted to communication between cells was a prominent feature of the response. Other features suggested a molecular prog

Stereotyped axonal bundle formation and neuromeric patterns in embryos of a cyclostome, Lampetra japonica.

Early embryonic development of the nervous system of a lamprey, Lampetra japonica, was studied by using immunohistochemical techniques and by scanning electron microscopy. The earliest appearance of axons was detected at Tahara's stage 21-, when dorsolateral and ventral longitudinal fasciculi were present in the hindbrain and spinal cord regions. The branchiomeric nerve roots began to appear at stage 22; the fibers were joined to the dorsolateral fasciculus proximally and also extended distally into each pharyngeal arch. The anterior neural tube was divided into several neuromeres: the mid-hin

Stereotypic behavioral responses to free-base cocaine and the development of behavioral sensitization in Drosophila.

Cocaine abuse is a large social and economic problem that has received much public and scientific attention in recent years. Rodent and primate models have been used to study the behavioral and neurological effects of cocaine. Repeated intermittent doses of cocaine lead to progressive increases in both locomotor activity and stereotyped behaviors known as 'reverse tolerance' or behavioral sensitization, which may model the behavioral and neurochemical processes occurring in cocaine-addicted humans [1]. The biological basis of sensitization is poorly understood. We report that free-base cocaine

Stereotyped yawning responses induced by electrical and chemical stimulation of paraventricular nucleus of the rat.

Yawning was evoked by electrical or chemical stimulation in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of anesthetized, spontaneously breathing rats. To evaluate physiological aspects of yawning, we monitored polygraphic measures as follows; a coordinated motor pattern of yawning was assessed by monitoring breathing [intercostal electromyogram (EMG)], mouth opening (digastric EMG), and stretching of the trunk (back EMG). We also recorded blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and the electrocorticogram (ECoG) to evaluate autonomic function and arousal responses during yawning. A stereotyped yawning response

Effects of histamine agents on methamphetamine-induced stereotyped behavior and behavioral sensitization in rats.

In this study, effects of histamine (HA) agents on methamphetamine (METH)-induced stereotyped behavior and behavioral sensitization were examined in rats. Pretreatment with a precursor of HA, L-histidine (750mg/kg), significantly inhibited the METH (3 mg/kg)-induced stereotyped behavior, whereas pretreatment with an inhibitor of HA synthesis, alpha-fluoromethylhistidine (FMH) (100 mg/kg), an H1 antagonist pyrilamine (5 mg/kg) or an H2 antagonist zolantidine (5 mg/kg) enhanced it. The inhibitory effect of L-histidine on METH-induced stereotyped behavior was significantly blocked by coadministra

Growth differences associated with compulsive and stereotyped behavior disorders in adults with mental retardation.

We have recently observed that compulsive behaviors in mentally retarded patients appear to be quite prevalent, can be reliably assessed, and have a high rate of co-occurrence with stereotyped and self-injurious behaviors in this population. As abnormal growth rate has been observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients, we examined physical stature in adults with mental retardation who display repetitive movement disorders. Identification of cases with stereotypic movement disorder, and cases with compulsive behaviors was done using a symptom checklist and direct observation. Subjec

Effect of long-term haloperidol treatment on striatal neuropeptides: relation to stereotyped behavior.

Behavioral and biochemical responses to D1 and D2 dopamine (DA) agonists were used to evaluate the participation of striatal peptidergic mechanisms in the motor function alterations that attend chronic neuroleptic treatment. Rats, given haloperidol (1 mg/kg, i.c.) for 21 consecutive days, were randomly allocated to one of the following treatments: the D1 agonist SKF 38393, the D2 agonist quinpirole, their combination or saline. Stereotyped behavior and neuropeptide levels were evaluated after 5 days treatment and 4 days washout. Haloperidol increased most oral behaviors including licking, chew

The therapeutic effect of reactive self-monitoring on the reduction of inappropriate social and stereotypic behaviours.

The effect of self-monitoring on the reduction of inappropriate social and stereotypic behaviour was investigated. Participants were three men and two women with mild to moderate learning disabilities. A multiple baseline design across participants was used. Participants were taught to monitor and record the frequency of their inappropriate behaviours. No extrinsic reinforcement was used throughout the study. Assessments of language ability and functional significance of behaviours were made. Significant reductions in target behaviours for all participants were observed. The findings suggest t

Automaticity of social behavior: direct effects of trait construct and stereotype-activation on action.

Previous research has shown that trait concepts and stereotype become active automatically in the presence of relevant behavior or stereotyped-group features. Through the use of the same priming procedures as in previous impression formation research, Experiment 1 showed that participants whose concept of rudeness was printed interrupted the experimenter more quickly and frequently than did participants primed with polite-related stimuli. In Experiment 2, participants for whom an elderly stereotype was primed walked more slowly down the hallway when leaving the experiment than did control part

Protective equipment as treatment for stereotypic hand mouthing: sensory extinction or punishment effects?

We examined the effects of noncontingent and contingent protective equipment as treatment for self-injurious hand mouthing exhibited by 2 individuals with profound mental retardation. Results of a functional analysis assessment revealed that neither subject's self-injury was maintained by social reinforcement: One subject's self-injury was cyclical in nature; the other's occurred during all assessment conditions but most frequently when left alone. In the noncontingent-equipment condition, oven mitts were placed on the individual's hands at the beginning of a session and remained on throughout
