STUDY OBJECTIVE: Stroke mimics may be difficult distinguish from acute ischemic strokes and are often treated with alteplase though not by intent. We report the characteristics, frequency, and outcomes of stroke mimics treated at our institution. Dysphagia in stroke is linked with increased risk of pneumonia, increased length of stay and poorer outcomes. This study followed a cohort of 88 acute ischaemic stroke patients admitted to hospitals in Perth, Western Australia, over 30 days. There were 8/88 deaths (9%). Infections were treated in 25/80 survivors (31%). Presence and severity of dysphagia were measured at 2 and 7 days post-stroke. Acute stroke patients in the Molise region (Italy) are generally admitted to an Internal Medicine or Geriatrics hospital ward. Widely different incidences have been found for hemineglect in acute stroke, and there is no agreement on the consequences of hemineglect for activities of daily living recovery. The Shatin Stroke Registry is a prospective study of all patients admitted with acute stroke to a general hospital in Hong Kong where the population is predominantly Chinese. Each patient was examined by a neurologist and 95.5% of the patients had a brain CT. An autopsy study of cerebral atherosclerosis in 310 Ghanaian adults 20 years and over, using a simplified grading system has shown a lower prevalence of severe lesions (necrotic, ulcerated, haemorrhagic and calcified lesions). The usefulness of computed tomography (CT) was assessed in 325 consecutive patients with a "clinically definite first stroke" from a community stroke register.
