The assessment of clients with speech disorders presents challenges for speech-language pathologists. For example, having a reliable way of … nt that involved recording frontal electroencephalography (EEG) activity from fifteen children with stuttering whilst they looked at visual stimuli. The contribution of our study is to provide a comprehensive background and a framework for emotional state detection experiments as assessment and monitoring tool in speech pathology. It mainly discusses the fea …

Stuttering priapism is rare and under-investigated clinical entity. Although it shares similarities with ischaemic priapism, by definition, stuttering priapism has distinct characteristics that advocate for a different management in the clinical setting. Therefore, the management of stuttering priapism aims primarily to prevent recurrence rather than the resolution of spontaneous attacks. A multimodal approach and the individualization of each case are essential because of the diversity of the condition and the plethora of proposed therapeutic strategies. Understanding the underlying pathophys…

UNLABELLED: Singing has long been used as a technique to enhance and reeducate temporal aspects of articulation in speech disorders. In the present study, differences in temporal structure of sung versus spoken speech were investigated in stuttering. In particular, the question was examined if singing helps to reduce VOT variability of voiceless plosives, which would indicate enhanced temporal coordination of oral and laryngeal processes. Eight German adolescents who stutter and eight typically fluent peers repeatedly spoke and sang a simple German congratulation formula in which a disyllabic …

AIMS: Developmental stuttering is now generally considered to arise from genetic determinants interacting with neurologic function. Changes within speech-motor white matter (WM) connections may also be implicated. These connections can now be studied in great detail by high-angular-resolution diffusion magnetic resonance imaging. Therefore, diffusion spectrum imaging was used to reconstruct streamlines to examine white matter connections in people who stutter (PWS) and in people who do not stutter (PWNS).
METHOD: WM morphology of the entire brain was assayed in 8 right-handed male PWS and 8 s…

Clinicians often rely on ethnographic interviews to make judgments about the effect of stuttering on the lives of people who stutter. This form of interview aids the clinician in assessing specific dimensions of the client's life (e.g. career choice, education, etc.) that might be impacted by dysfluency. Further, the information gathered from ethnographic interviews is used to make professional judgments relating to the client's personality type and behavioral traits. This study used methods associated with discursive psychology to examine data taken from two ethnographic interviews between a …

It is important for clinicians to understand how adults who stutter construct who they are, i.e. their self-identity, in order to offer personally meaningful interventions. Early research on stuttering and self-concept provided initial knowledge, but there has been a dearth of further research in this field. This article, the third in a series of papers emanating from a doctoral study, provides new insight into the configurations of self-identity formations of adults who stutter. Previous articles from the study described how 'Able' (positive self-identity) and 'DisOther' (negative self-identi…

The present study investigated the role of sensory feedback (auditory, proprioception, and tactile) at the intra- and inter-gestural levels of speech motor coordination in normal and fast speech rate conditions in two groups: (1) persons who stutter (PWS) and (2) those who do not (PNS). Feedback perturbations were carried out with the use of masking noise (auditory), tendon vibration (proprioception), and nonwords that differed in the amount of required tactile lip contact (/api/+tactile and /awi/-tactile). Comparisons were also made between jaw-free and jaw-immobilized (with a bite-block) tas

BACKGROUND: stuttering is a speech fluency disorder. Auditory evoked potentials (AEP) are electrophysiological tests that are being used as an instrument to establish the diagnosis of several disorders as well as to assess therapeutic outcomes.
AIM: 1 - to characterize the AEP of individuals with stuttering in comparison to a control group; 2 - to verify the amelioration of these potentials post speech-language treatment.
METHOD: the research sample was composed by 8 adult males with stuttering - research group (RG), with ages ranging from 18 to 30 years, and 8 normally fluent adult males - …

This paper critiques a recent proposed causal hypothesis of stuttering. It is argued that the proposal is a classic example of the misuse of the representativeness heuristic in the search for the cause of the disorder.

The majority of therapy programs for people who stutter are aimed at modifying the entire speech output by using techniques that reduce the overt signature events. Use of these techniques for extended time periods are thought to induce true fluency that is automatic, natural, and effortless. It is proposed that the present form of therapeutic intervention induces pseudofluency rather than true fluency. Pseudofluency is the speech posrtherapy of persons who stutter, free of the discrete signature events of stuttering, but replaced by cognitively mediated gestures that are embedded as continuous…

Craig discussed fluency outcomes following stuttering therapy that involved retraining the speech system, on the assumption that the speech end product is truly fluent. As previously outlined by Dayalu and Kalinowski, we strongly disagree with the notion that behavioral paradigms can ever result in automatic, long lasting natural sounding fluent speech. Fluent speech is within the grasp of one who stutters as seen in the effects of choral speech and derivatives such as delayed auditory feedback.

This article offers principles to consider in developing therapy plans for school-age children who stutter. Goals of speech therapy should be individualized, educationally relevant, and lead to functional outcomes that last. Skills and experiences gained through speech therapy should help children communicate effectively and develop positive attitudes about themselves as communicators. A variety of collaborative planning tools are presented to help IEP team members prioritize needs based on relative importance of behavioral, cognitive, and affective aspects of the stuttering problem from the p…

Preliminary Phase I and II trials for the Lidcombe Program of early stuttering intervention have found favorable outcomes and that the treatment is safe. Although speech-language pathologists (SLPs) often need to intervene with pre-schoolers' early stuttering, many of these children will recover at some time in the future without such intervention. Consequently, they need to know whether the Lidcombe Program's effect on stuttering is greater than that of natural recovery. Participants were 23 pre-school children who were randomly assigned to either a control group or a treatment group that rec…

A preliminary study (Onslow, Costa, & Rue, 1990) suggested that a parent-conducted program of verbal response-contingent stimulation would be an effective treatment for stuttering children younger than 5 years. The present study was designed to expand those preliminary findings by using a larger group of children and by comparing them to a control group of children. Twelve children in the experimental group achieved median percent syllables stuttered (%SS) scores below 1.0 for a 12-month posttreatment period. The children's treatments were completed in a median of 10.5 1-hour clinic sessions a…

An analysis of lip and jaw motion was carried out in order to evaluate previous observations on the fluent speech of stutterers and to describe possible effects of speech therapy. A strain gauge system was used to transduce lip and jaw movements during fluent repetitions of "sapapple" in adult stutterers and nonstutterers. Fifteen movement parameters were measured on lip closure for the initial /p/ sound in a group of 10 normal speakers, 10 stutterers who had no recent speech therapy, and 8 stutterers who had been through an intensive speech therapy program involving modification of speech tim

Fifty-six stutterers, four to 34 months after treatment, received an unexpected telephone call from the clinic announcing that their speech was being assessed. At random times before or after that call, they received an unexpected telephone call from a stranger and, unknown to them, stating their speech was recorded and assessed. Two months after these calls, a subgroup (N = 20) was included in an apparent telephone public opinion survey during which their speech was recorded and assessed. There were no significant differences between the mean frequency of stuttering across the three measureme…

Brief treatments for stuttering would be available if they could produce long term benefits. Six clients were given training in a variant of an airflow technique. Treatment required eight hours of clinician time per client. Significant improvement occurred after four days of treatment, but relapse was considerable and by the end of the year speech was unimproved in respect to pretreatment scores. Presently, proven effective treatments require 30 hours of clinician time per client and shorter treatments do not appear to produce comparable results.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the processes involved in the construction of the intersectional identity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people who stutter (LGBTQ+PWS). The study fills a gap in the literature between research on the social identity of people who stutter (Daniels & Gabel, 2004) and a description of the lived experiences of LGBTQ people who stutter (Daniels, Boyle, & Archer, 2023).
METHODS: A hybrid qualitative approach combining Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and Grounded Theory methodologies (GT) was used incor
