Hair Analysis in Forensic Toxicology: An Updated Review with a Special Focus on Pitfalls.

BACKGROUND: The detection of drugs in hair analysis has progressively emerged as a consequence of the enhanced sensitivity of analytical techniques used in forensic toxicology; a greater advantage in using this matrix with respect to classical ones (i.e. urine and blood) is an easier and non-invasive sample collection, even when the careful supervision of law enforcement officers is required to avoid the risk that the sample may be adulterated or replaced. Moreover, according to the length of the hair, the history of drug exposure can be retrospectively monitored from few weeks up to months or

Safety and efficacy of a digital therapeutic for substance use disorder: Secondary analysis of data from a NIDA clinical trials network study.

Background: Traditional treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) rely heavily on face-to-face interactions, which pose substantial limitations for patients. A clinical trial of a digital therapeutic (DT), delivering behavioral therapy demonstrated safety and efficacy in a population including patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) not treated with buprenorphine, which is not a guideline-recommended approach. This study re-analyzed the data excluding patients with OUD to more closely approximate real-world patient populations. Methods: Secondary analysis of patients with substance use dis

Effects of the ACA on Health Care Coverage for Adults With Substance Use Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed changes in health care coverage in nationally representative samples of low- and middle-income adults with and without substance use disorders following the 2014 Affordable Care Act marketplace launch and Medicaid expansion. METHODS: Data from the 2012-2018 (N=407,985) National Survey on Drug Use and Health identified low- and middle-income nonelderly adults with alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, or heroin use disorders. A sociodemographically adjusted difference-in-differences analysis assessed the trends in Medicaid and individually purchased private insurance bet

Recognising intoxication in healthcare: evidence, challenges, and implications.

Intoxication is a common clinical presentation and is associated with increased risk of injury, self-harm, and premature mortality. It also complicates clinical care because patients who are intoxicated may provide unreliable histories, display altered pain perception, and exhibit behaviours that increase risk to themselves or others. Despite these challenges, research consistently shows that clinicians are often inaccurate in identifying intoxication or estimating its severity. This narrative review synthesises the literature on clinician recognition of alcohol and other drug intoxication to

Substance use disorder and altered hemispheric asymmetries: A systematic review.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is characterized by compulsive use despite adverse consequences and may be influenced by brain asymmetry affecting cognitive and emotional processes. This systematic review investigates the relationship between brain asymmetry and SUD. PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycInfo were searched for articles published until July 2025, using the search terms: ((Alcoholism) OR (alcohol abuse) OR (substance abuse) OR (addiction)) AND ((handedness) OR (footedness) OR (dichotic listening) OR (line bisection task) OR (visual half field technique) OR (fMRI asymmetry) OR (EEG asymme

The Concept of Treatment-refractory Addiction: Drawing on Psychiatric Insights to Improve Addiction Research.

The concept of treatment-refractory addiction (TRA), while relatively new to the addiction field, is a well-established concept in other areas of medicine and psychiatry. Recent commentaries have highlighted the need for clearer conceptualization and definition of TRA. This commentary argues that conceptual frameworks established in other psychiatric domains (eg, depression, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder) can and should inform the development of criteria and strategies for identifying and addressing TRA in substance use disorders (SUDs). Central to this effort is the recognition

Artificial Intelligence-driven and technological innovations in the diagnosis and management of substance use disorders.

Substance Use Disorders (SUD) lead to a collection of health challenges such as overdoses and clinical diseases. Populations that are vulnerable and lack straightforward treatment access are vulnerable to significant economic and social effects linked to SUD. The ongoing advances in technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), promise new ways to reduce the effects of SUD, refine treatment standards, and minimize the risk of relapse through tailored treatment plans. Recent innovations in functional neuroimaging techniques, such as fMRI, have led to the ability to detect brain patterns

Prevention of Illicit Drug use from the Users' Perspective.

This research described the perspective of illicit drug users regarding illicit drug use prevention initiatives. The study used a convergent parallel mixed methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. In the quantitative component of the study, 111 subjects from a psychosocial care centre (CAPS-AD). The qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 11 subjects who were selected from among the participants and who declared themselves to be personally affected as being or having been illicit drugs users. From the perspective of drug users, the results

What motivates students to decrease or cease substance use?: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: The association between illicit substance use by third-level education students and their mental and physical health is well documented. The aim of this scoping review was to determine factors that contribute to student motivations to reduce or stop their use of illicit substances, and to elaborate on factors that may be pertinent for student-focused behaviour change interventions for substance use. METHOD: We searched eight databases in March 2021 using search terms based on 'students', 'illicit substance use', and 'motivations'. We identified 86 research articles that reported on

Epigenetics of Drug Addiction.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are chronic brain diseases characterized by transitions from recreational to compulsive drug use and aberrant drug craving that persists for months to years after abstinence is achieved. The transition to compulsive drug use implies that plasticity is occurring, altering the physiology of the brain to precipitate addicted states. Epigenetic phenomena represent a varied orchestra of transcriptional tuning mechanisms that, in response to environmental stimuli, create and maintain gene expression-mediated physiological outcomes. Therefore, epigenetic mechanisms repr
