The effects of parenterally administered magnesium sulfate on maternal and neonatal calcium and magnesium metabolism in nonasphyxiated, term pregnancies complicated by pregnancy-induced hypertension were studied prospectively. In addition, the neurobehavioral effects of neonatal hypermagnesemia were investigated by means of a neonatal assessment scale that specifically measures reflex activity and both passive and active muscle tone. Sulfated glycosaminoglycan (SGAG) composition of normal mucosa of esophagus, gastric body, antrum, duodenum, jejunum and rectum is reported. A novel bis-sulfated tetraglycosylceramide containing N-acetylgalactosamine was isolated from the lipid extract of rat kidney. The isolation procedure involved extraction of lipids with chloroform/methanol, alkaline methanolysis, and column chromatographies with DEAE-Sephacel and silica beads. This study was undertaken to determine whether serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) assays could be used in lieu of urinary 17-ketosteroid (17-KS) determinations. To delineate normal values, serum DHEA-S levels were measured in 41 normal women (controls). These averaged 1.78 +/- 0.1 (SE) micrograms/ml and ranged from 0.3 to 2.8 micrograms/ml. A case of a 22-month-old child with acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is reported. At five months of age, the patient experienced generalized oral and cutaneous candidiasis for which she was treated with nystatin and iodochlorhydroxyquin-hydrocortisone. One hundred forty-four toxemic patients were studied by continuous electronic maternal and fetal monitoring. Ninety-seven were treated by intravenous bolus of 2 g MgSO4 every 1-2 hours, and 47 by intravenous drip MgSO4 at a rate of 1 g/hour. Clinical doses of MgSO4 do not affect maternal ECG, temperature, uterine contractions, or fetal heart rate. Intravenous bolus administration is frequently associated with slowing of maternal respirations and hypotension and occasionally with transient apnea.

Amylopectin sulfate, a sulfated polysaccharide that has an antipeptic property, was examined for its ability to bind gastric mucins. After chemically cross-linking the amylopectin sulfate into an insoluble gel, its binding with mucins isolated from antral and fundic mucosa of canine stomachs was studied with chromatography.
