The causal roles of the frontal eye fields (FEF) and superior colliculus (SC) in spatial selective attention have not been directly compared. Reversible inactivation is an established method for testing causality but comparing results between FEF and SC is complicated by differences in size and morphology of the two brain regions. Here we exploited the fact that inactivation of FEF and SC also changes the metrics of saccadic eye movements, providing an independent benchmark for the strength of the causal manipulation. Using monkeys trained to covertly perform a visual motion-change detection t

To what extent can the mammalian visual system be shaped by visual behavior? Here we analyze the shape of the visual fields, the densities and distribution of cells in the retinal ganglion-cell layer and the organization of the visual projections in two species of facultative non-strictly subterranean rodents, Spalacopus cyanus and Ctenomys talarum, aiming to compare these traits with those of phylogenetically closely related species possessing contrasting diurnal/nocturnal visual habits. S. cyanus shows a definite zone of frontal binocular overlap and a corresponding area centralis, but a hig

Cell-cell recognition guides the assembly of the vertebrate brain during development. δ-Protocadherins comprise a family of neural adhesion molecules that are differentially expressed and have been implicated in a range of neurodevelopmental disorders. Here we show that the expression of δ-protocadherins partitions the zebrafish optic tectum into radial columns of neurons. Using in vivo two-photon imaging of bacterial artificial chromosome transgenic zebrafish, we show that pcdh19 is expressed in discrete columns of neurons, and that these columnar modules are derived from proliferative pcdh19

Recently the authors showed that a computational model of visual saliency could account for changes in gaze behavior of monkeys with damage in the primary visual cortex. Here we propose a neural prosthesis to restore eye gaze behavior by electrically stimulating the superior colliculus to drive visual attention. The saliency computational model is used to calculate the stimulation parameters from a real-time camera stream. Our simulations demonstrate that electrodes implanted in the superior colliculus at 1.0mm spacing are, in principle, able to recover specifically those visual attention beha

In the present study the telencephalic connections between the centres of the tectofugal and thalamofugal pathways were investigated with Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin and biotinylated dextran-amine anterograde tracers in chicken using light and electron microscopy. No direct connection was found between the visual Wulst and the ectostriatum or the telencephalic centres of the tectofugal and thalamofugal pathways. Besides other projections, the visual Wulst emitted fibres also to the middle and lateral parts of the hyperstriatum ventrale. Further experiments revealed that the middle part

Subcortical visual centres such as the lateral geniculate nucleus, the lateral inferior pulvinar and the superior colliculus, together with the primary visual cortex and its adjacent white matter, were studied in 12 Alzheimer brains and five age-matched controls. The periodic acid methenamine technique was used for the demonstration of senile plaques and the Gallyas technique for neurofibrillary tangles and neuritic threads in the neuropil. In the lateral geniculate nucleus and inferior pulvinar, the presence of periodic acid methenamine-positive senile plaques was observed in variable numbers

The projection from the superficial layers of the tectum to the pretectal complex in the cat was examined using the retrograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase. Restricted injections were made into different parts of the pretectum. Neurons in the superior colliculus were found to be arranged in a mediolateral array that corresponds to the rostromedial to caudolateral array of their axon projections to the nucleus of the optic tract and posterior pretectal nucleus. These results suggest that similar parts of the retinotopic maps present in the pretectum and superior col

Female American toads were tested for mating call phonotaxis (prostaglandin-induced) after brain lesions. The pretrigeminal nucleus, all of the telencephalon (except the preoptic area and immediately adjacent septal area), the dorsal thalamus (including all of the anterior nuclei and most of the central nuclei), the optic tectum, and the dorsal and medial parts of the torus were removed without interferring with the hormonal sensitization, acoustic triggering, or production of phonotaxis. These lesions removed most of the forebrain and much of the midbrain auditory areas. These data are compar

We used reversible cold lesions to explore the oculomotor consequences of separate and combined dysfunction of the superior colliculus (SC) and the frontal eye field (FEF). Two monkeys were trained to fixate visual targets. In one we measured visually driven saccades while cooling the right SC, first alone, then in combination with bilateral FEF ablation. Two cryodes in the other subject permitted measurement of eye movements during cooling of either the right FEF or the right SC, or both structures together. Cooling FEF mainly caused a neglect. Raising the cryode temperature slightly alleviat

Developing and regenerating frog optic axons grow within optic pathways and form connections only with optic targets. However, unlike normal development, many regenerating optic axons in the adult frog are misrouted within optic pathways, including axons that grow into the opposite retina. Many of the axons misrouted during regeneration appear to be collaterals of axons that grow in normal directions. Ganglion cell loss of up to 60% occurs after optic nerve damage, beginning prior to reinnervation of optic targets. Massive axonal collateralization also takes place near the point of nerve damag

Techniques of intra-axonal transport were utlizied to elucidate the organization of diencephalic and midbrain projections to the inferior olivary nucleus of the Virginia opossum. Retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase injected into the olive suggests that terminals within it arise from the subparafascicular nucleus of the caudal thalamus, the nucleus of Darkschewitsch, the fields of Forel, the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, the periaqueductal grey, the caudal pretectal nucleus, the tegmentum dorsomedial to the red nucleus, the red nucleus (minimal), the nucleus linearis, as well as the

Thalamic structures relaying impulses originating from optic stimulation of the retina and electric stimulation of the tectum on the way to the general cortex, hyperstriatum dorsal ventricular ridge and striatum were studied in turtles Emys orbicularis. Anodal polarization of the n. rotundus temporarily, and the lesion of this nucleus irreversibly, suppressed the main negative component of responses evoked by tectal stimulation and light flashes in the dorsal ventricular ridge without affecting them in the general cortex. Translation and elongation of V1 entailed that the occipital cortex covered the superior colliculi along with a downward rotation of the poles. OBJECTIVE: A safe entry zone to tegmental lesions was identified based on intraoperative electrophysiological findings, the compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) from the extraocular muscles, and anatomic considerations. This entry zone is bordered caudally by the intramesencephalic path of the trochlear, laterally by the spinothalamic tract, and rostrally by the caudal margin of the brachium of the superior colliculus.
METHODS: Four intrinsic midbrain lesions were operated upon via the safe entry zone using the infratentorial paramedian supracerebellar approach. All lesions involved the t

Compulsive drug use despite negative consequences is a core addiction feature and key therapeutic target. Animal models utilize footshock to screen for mice exhibiting compulsive-like addiction traits. Following the administration of aversive stimuli, compulsive animals persist in drug-seeking, suggesting that addicted individuals may have impaired innate defensive responses, thereby exacerbating addictive behaviors. However, little is known about the neural mechanisms behind this behavior. The superior colliculus (SC), a multisensory integration hub, plays a crucial regulatory role in innate

The two huge Mauthner neurons (MNs) form the center of the fast-start network in the hindbrain of fish. Their activation initiates a rapid turning maneuver, the so-called C-start, within milliseconds. Here, we recorded intracellularly from the MNs of goldfish to quantify the spatiotemporal flow of visual information from the two eyes, the optic nerves, and the ipsilateral and contralateral hemispheres of the optic tectum (OT) to each MN. Strong light flashes delivered to one eye induced postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) in both MNs after a delay of 35 ms. By directly stimulating the optic nerve,
