Metallic bioresorbable orthopaedic implants based on magnesium, iron and zinc-based alloys that provide rigid internal fixation without foreign-body complications associated with permanent implants have great potential as next-generation orthopaedic devices. Magnesium (Mg) based alloys exhibit excellent biocompatibility. However, the mechanical performance of such implants for orthopaedic applications is contingent on limiting the rate of corrosion in vivo throughout the bone healing process. Additionally, the surgical procedure for the implantation of internal bone fixation devices may impart

PURPOSE: To describe the surgical technique for implantation of a novel flexible, suturable, intrastromal synthetic cornea device.
METHODS: This report is a description of a novel surgical technique. Adult patients (≥18 years) with corneal edema who met specific inclusion criteria were enrolled. Intraoperative anterior segment optical coherence tomography was used to guide the surgery. The surgical procedure was performed under general anesthesia, utilizing a modified intrastromal pocket technique for secure implantation. First, a 4-mm partial-thickness trephination was created using a hand-h

BACKGROUND: The traditional nonsurgical accommodative treatment for diabetes-associated Charcot foot arthropathy has been unsuccessful in improving the quality of life in affected individuals. This has led to the growing interest in surgical correction of the acquired deformity with either "super construct" internal fixation implants or fine-wire static circular external fixation. The use of static circular external fixation without implants has been demonstrated to achieve high rates of deformity correction with low complication rates. The goal of this investigation was to assess the risk of

Surgical replacement with artificial devices has revolutionised the care of patients with severe valvular diseases. Mechanical valves are very durable, but require long-term anticoagulation. Bioprosthetic heart valves (BHVs), devices manufactured from glutaraldehyde-fixed animal tissues, do not need long-term anticoagulation, but their long-term durability is limited to 15 - 20 years, mainly because of mechanical failure and tissue calcification. Although mechanisms of BHV calcification are not fully understood, major determinants are glutaraldehyde fixation, presence of devitalised cells and

This study reports a patient affected by congenital frontoethmoidal encephalocele. The cause of this malformation is unknown. A preoperative selective diagnosis evaluation is necessary. The workup should include an accurate clinical examination associated with radiological study (two- and three-dimensional computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, etc). The aim of the surgical treatment is to restore the functional brain tissue in the cranial cavity, perform dural repair, correct bone lack and other associated facial malformations (hypertelorism, orbital dystopia, etc.). Distal radius fractures, the most common long bone fracture, are treated in several ways, including closed reduction, percutaneous pinning, external fixation, and open reduction and internal fixation. This article presents a surgical technique and a series of patients treated with a novel minimally invasive intramedullary fixation technique. The implant is a partially flexible intramedullary rod that can be locked in a rigid position once it is implanted in the bone. An awl and reamer are passed through a starter hole in the radial styloid using a 2-cm incision between the 1st and 2nd dorsal c

BACKGROUND: Lateral compression type-1 pelvic fractures are a common fragility fracture in older adults. Patients who do not mobilise due to ongoing pain are at greater risk of immobility-related complications. Standard treatment in the United Kingdom is provision of pain relief and early mobilisation, unlike fragility hip fractures, which are usually treated surgically based on evidence that early surgery is associated with better outcomes. Currently there is no evidence on whether patients with lateral compression type-1 fragility fractures would have a better recovery with surgery than non-

We report the outcome of conservative and surgical management in 50 skeletally mature patients (average age 64.6 years, 36 females patients) with 51 supracondylar femoral fractures treated in our unit between June 1991 and December 1993. Thirty-six fractures were caused by low-energy trauma, and 15 were due to high-energy trauma. Open fractures occurred in 5 patients. Of the 34 patients (35 fractures) treated conservatively, 15 (46%) achieved a satisfactory result. Of the 16 patients treated by internal fixation, 10 (62%) reached a satisfactory outcome. Osteoporosis, severe comminution of the

The acute infection is defined as bacterial growth within the surgical wound, that may occur within days to weeks after initial surgery but before bone union. The chances of complete recovery after an acute soft tissue inflammation are closely related to the interval between initial surgery and first signs of infection, the early recognition of the complication, the type of bacteria involved and the therapeutic measures. The first symptoms of an impending infection are the classical clinical ones of any inflammation: tenderness, swelling and reddening. All imaging procedures are of little or n

According to the well-known principle of compression, a new kind of screw has been developed. It is a development of the miniaturized Michelet-Champy osteosynthesis device which we have used for the last 10 years in maxillofacial surgery. These traction-screws were initially elaborated for rigid stabilization after sagittal ramus osteotomies such as Obwegeser-Dal Pont. Usually, three screws are inserted at each side, via a transjugal approach. It is then possible to remove the intermaxillary fixation device at the end of the surgical procedure. However, these screws are also useful in other ca

UNLABELLED: A new method for delivering intraocular lens (IOL) haptics through sclerotomies for intrascleral fixation using catheter needles was evaluated in pig eyes. A bent catheter needle was used to penetrate the surgical corneal wound from the presumed sclerotomy. Extraocularly, the leading haptic of the IOL was fixated between the external tube and the internal needle of the catheter needle. The fixation was strong enough to support the IOL and to extract the leading haptic through the sclerotomy site. The trailing haptic was fixated using another catheter needle extraocularly and was su

BACKGROUND: Few studies have been conducted on the biomechanical stability of oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) in conjunction with different fixation methods in patients with degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) at varying bone densities. This study uses finite element analysis to assess the biomechanical stability of OLIF with various fixation techniques for treating DLS under differing bone densities.
METHODS: A three-dimensional finite element model of the lumbar spine (L1-S1) was created using CT scans from a Lenke-Silva IV DLS patient. The control group consisted of a posterior lumb

Pin tract infection is one of the most common complications associated with the use of external fixation. While some studies have identified the potential benefit of chlorhexidine gluconate-impregnated polyurethane dressings to reduce the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infections, we are unaware of any published studies that evaluate the effectiveness of similar technologies in reducing the risk for external-fixation-related pin tract infections. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of chlorhexidine gluconate-impregnated polyurethane dressing in red

The aim of this study is to present an oral device that improves splanchnocranium stability after osteodistraction in children treated for correction of craniofacial malformations. When removal of the distraction device before the end of the treatment is necessary, the reposition of a new fixation system might not be possible. In these cases, regrown bone is immature, and relapse of malformation occurs frequently. We have been treating these cases by the application of an oral device named Maxillary Advancement Contention (MAC). MAC is used in every patient when any complication interrupts the

A biomechanical in vitro test was performed to determine the stabilizing effect of various implants for the surgical treatment of the torn acromioclavicular joint. In a specially designed testing device, plastic and cadaver specimens of the shoulder girdle were stressed in various ways. Different dislocations between the acromion and the clavicle and between the clavicle and the coracoid were determined, as well as the stiffness of the implants. A convenient stabilizing effect combined with less rigid fixation to secure the newly treated AC joint was provided by K-wire fixation with cerclage.

BACKGROUND: Proximal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis is a reliable and repeatable method of surgical correction for the semi-rigid and rigid hammer toe deformity. In recent years the authors have noted a significant increase in the use of novel intramedullary devices in place of the traditional percutaneous Kirschner wires (k-wire). This paper set out to critically review three methods of internal fixation; ToeGrip implant, SmartToe implant and buried k-wire technique in comparison to the traditional method of percutaneous k-wire fixation during arthrodesis of the proximal interphalangeal jo

INTRODUCTION: The high prevalence of intraoral wound dehiscence (IOWD) following open reduction internal fixation of mandibular fractures has not been well studied.
OBJECTIVE: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to investigate and assess possible risk factors for IOWD related to patients and surgical technique.
METHODS: All patients who did not have diabetes, were not medically compromised such as patients with nutritional deficiencies or endocrine disorders, did not smoke, did not consume alcohol, and had mandibular fractures managed through open reduction internal fixation and via i

Recent PIP fractures are challenging trauma in terms of diagnosis as well as treatment. It must be remembered that the final outcome will have a considerable impact on the global finger and hand function. Immediate mobilization and rehabilitation are mandatory, and may justify a surgical approach and fixation in selected cases. A good understanding of the fracture type is essential and relies in good part on precise, focused and standardized radiographs. Non-displaced fractures are generally treated conservatively. In the proximal phalanx, the orientation of the fracture line dictates the stab

OBJECTIVE: Surgical skills are generally acquired by watching the "hand movements" of experts. "Eye movements" are now attracting attention in skill-learning fields. Eye-tracking technology was introduced preliminarily to develop a better skill-learning system for neuroendovascular treatments.
METHODS: During a task to place a detachable coil into a silastic cerebral aneurysm model under biplane X-ray fluoroscopy, gaze points were recorded using a head-mount eye-tracking device.
RESULTS: During the task, 91% of fixations were allocated to the monitor displaying fluoroscopic images, and the o

The use of foot abduction orthosis [Denis Browne boot (DBB)] is vital for maintaining correction after the Ponseti technique for treating idiopathic clubfoot. Lack of adherence to DBB regimen is reported to be a potent cause for recurrence. Adherence to the boots and bars programme is difficult and patients sometimes resist their use. The evaluation of alternatives that may facilitate adherence is therefore necessary and reasonable. There are less data published regarding the outcome after the use of alternative splints. In patients who showed poor adherence to DBB, we introduced a novel unila
