BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to measure sweat rate during exercise in the heat after directly inhibiting carbonic anhydrase (CA) in eccrine sweat glands via transdermal iontophoresis of acetazolamide. It was hypothesized that if CA was important for sweat production, local administration of acetazolamide, without the confounding systemic effects of dehydration typically associated with past studies, would have a significant effect on sweat rate during exercise.

The uncommon diagnosis of chromhidrosis is most frequently made in young adults. This sweat gland disease, although benign, may impact significantly on the patient's quality of life. We describe the first report of familial chromhidrosis of pseudo-eccrine type (pseudochromhidrosis) occurring in two brothers aged 9 and 12 years. The classification and causality of chromhidrosis is described and approaches to assessment and management are outlined.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) has recently been recognised as a low-grade carcinoma that almost always occurs on the eyelid. BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy (SLNB) has become a standard staging procedure for patients with cutaneous neoplasms of known metastatic potential. In the current study, the authors explored the use of SLNB in patients with primary sweat gland carcinomas (SGCs).

OBJECTIVES: To report the clinical and pathologic features and to evaluate the treatment results of 7 cases of sweat gland carcinoma of the vulva.
METHODS: The clinical records of the 7 cases of sweat gland carcinoma of the vulva, admitted to our hospital for treatment between December, 1974 and December, 1994, were reviewed. The data including clinical and pathologic features, treatments and posttreatment follow-ups. Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the skin is one of the rarest sweat gland tumours. We have studied two cases of adenoid cystic sweat gland carcinoma clinically, histologically and immunohistochemically. One tumour was located on the occiput of an 18-year-old male patient, while the other developed on the back of a 49-year-old woman. We report on the case of a 31-year-old woman who presented with localized unilateral hyperhidrosis on her lower right arm. Histological features showed a hamartoma of the eccrine sweat glands. Because she was afraid of being overweight, the patient took an appetite depressant. Under this self-medication complete cessation of the localized hyperhidrosis was observed.

The human genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized by defective epithelial Cl- conductance (GCl). To distinguish the CF-affected GCl from other Cl- channels, we have studied the properties of GCl in normal and CF cells grown from explanted reabsorptive sweat ducts (RD). The cultured cells from normal subjects retained some of the typical duct cell properties.
