Cryptosporidiosis from a community swimming pool: outbreak investigation and follow-up study.

Tri-County Health Department investigated an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis linked to a community swimming pool. A cohort study was conducted in 37 persons who were invited to the pool party; 12 (57%) of 21 attendees had primary cryptosporidiosis infection. Risk factors for illness included swimming, getting water in mouth, and swallowing water. The pool met chlorination guidelines and used UV light irradiation, a supplemental disinfection technology that inactivates Cryptosporidium. A follow-up survey of the cohort was completed 7-8 weeks after the pool party; four (25%) of 16 non-attendees ha

The effect of pre-exercise glucose ingestion on performance during prolonged swimming.

The purpose of this study was to determine if pre-exercise glucose ingestion would improve distance swimming performance. Additionally, pre-exercise glucose was provided at 2 different feeding intervals to investigate the affects of the timing of administration. Ten male triathletes (mean +/- SD: age, 29.5 +/- 5.0 years; VO2peak, 48.8 +/- 3.2 ml.kg-1.min-1) swam 4000 m on 3 occasions following the consumption of either a 10% glucose solution 5 min prior to exercise (G5), a 10% glucose solution 35 min prior to exercise (G35), or a similar volume of placebo (PL). Despite a significant difference

STUDIES OF TROPICAL TUNA SWIMMING PERFORMANCE IN A LARGE WATER TUNNEL - KINEMATICS.

Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) swimming kinematics was studied in a large water tunnel at controlled swimming velocities (U). Quantified kinematic variables included the tail-beat frequency, stride length (l), caudal amplitude, yaw, the propulsive wavelength, the speed of the propulsive wave (C) and the sweepback angle of the pectoral fins. In general, all variables, except the propulsive wavelength and consequently C, are comparable to values determined for other teleosts. The propulsive wavelength for the tunas (1.231.29 L, where L is fork length) is 3060 % longer than in other

Neither an Individualised Nor a Standardised Sodium Bicarbonate Strategy Improved Performance in High-Intensity Repeated Swimming, or a Subsequent 200 m Swimming Time Trial in Highly Trained Female Swimmers.

Inconsistent swimming performances are often observed following sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) ingestion, possibly because the time taken to reach peak blood buffering capacity is highly variable between individuals. Personalising NaHCO3 ingestion based on time-to-peak blood bicarbonate (HCO3-) could be a solution; however, this strategy is yet to be explored in swimming, or adequately compared to standardised NaHCO3 approaches. Therefore, six highly trained female swimmers ingested 0.3 g·kg BM-1 NaHCO3 in capsules to pre-determine their individual time-to-peak blood HCO3-. They then participated

Chd7 regulates lipid metabolism and swim bladder inflation in zebrafish.

The chromodomain helicase remodeling enzyme, CHD7, has been directly linked to CHARGE syndrome, however recent studies show a wide variability of pathways regulated by the chromatin remodeling enzyme. Here, we show that chd7 mutant zebrafish present with a collection of dysregulated lipid metabolism enzymes in line with Pparγ regulated lipid metabolism. Consequently, we link lipid metabolism to swim bladder development and observe decreased size and non-inflated swim bladder during larval development. While loss-of-function of chd7 does not appear to affect the formation of the swim bladder du

The effect of evening swimming exercise on sleep parameters in male swimmers.

We evaluated the effects of evening swimming exercise on sleep variables in male swimmers. In a crossover design, 12 competitive male swimmers completed two trials (6:30-8:30 pm): the high-intensity swimming exercise condition (EX) and no-exercise condition (CON). Sleep quality was assessed using electroencephalography, and core body temperature (CBT) was evaluated by the pill type thermometer. Average CBT during the intervention period was significantly higher in EX (37.8°C ± 0.3°C) compared with CON (37.1°C ± 0.2°C, p < 0.05). However, at bedtime (11:00 pm), CBT did not differ significantly

Tethering and depth of submergence affect the swimming performance of undulatory robots.

Over the past few decades, biomimetic robotic experiments have significantly advanced our understanding of undulatory swimming. Compared to animal experiments, robotic experiments offer repeatability and controlled parameter variations, but the robots operate under constraints that differ from those experienced by their natural counterparts. Freely swimming robots often remain on the surface, whereas most undulatory fish, including eels, are typically fully submerged during locomotion. Studies focusing on submerged swimming commonly rely on tethered robots to maintain depth control. This

Assessing the Relationship between In-Water Kinetic Asymmetries and Performance in Swimming.

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship among force, impulse and their asymmetries with swimming performance across different distances, and to explore whether the correlations were dependent on the presence of "real" asymmetries (i.e., higher than metric variability). Thirty-five male swimmers (age: 19.5 years ± 5.0, body mass: 75.4 ± 11.5 kg, body height: 181.7 ± 7.6 cm) performed a 15-s tethered-swimming test, in which peak force, mean force and impulse of each body side were measured. The absolute and relative asymmetries were subsequently obtained. The coefficient of varia

Intraspecific and interspecific variations in the swimming characteristics of snakes according to their lifestyle.

Snakes exhibit extraordinary ecological diversity and occupy a broad range of terrestrial, aquatic, and intermediate environments. Despite their widespread capacity for swimming, quantitative assessments of their aquatic locomotion remain scarce. Furthermore, the roles of intraspecific variation in shaping swimming performance and kinematics have been largely overlooked, hindering robust interspecific comparisons. This study systematically investigated intraspecific and interspecific variation in 287 individuals representing seven snake species along a terrestrial to aquatic continuum. Nine co

Evidence-based severity assessment of the forced swim test in the rat.

The forced swim test (FST) is a traditional assay, which has been used for more than 40 years to assess antidepressant effects of novel drug candidates. In recent years, a debate about the test has focused on the assumption that the FST is highly aversive and burdening for the animals because of the earlier anthropomorphic interpretation and designation as a "behavioral despair test". The Directive 2010/63/EU and the German Animal Welfare law require a prospective severity classification of the planned experimental procedures. Still, an objective examination of the animals' burden in this test

Determination of chloroform concentration and human exposure assessment in the swimming pool.

This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the concentration of the by-products of chlorination in the swimming pool and estimate human health risk for the swimmers of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. In this study, the chloroform concentrations of 16 samples were measured using Gas Chromatography (GC). All the measured concentrations were less than the allowed amount announced by the World Health Organization (WHO). The results of the cancer risk (CR) and hazard index (HI) showed that the major exposure routes were found to be dermal during swimming and the 95 percentile of estimated C

The Effect of Propofol on a Forced Swim Test in Mice at 24 Hours.

BACKGROUND: There are few rapidly acting treatments for acute suicidality or treatment-resistant depression. Propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol) is an intravenous anesthetic agent used in outpatient settings. It is a gamma-aminobutyric acid type A agonist and has affinity at the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor. Elevation in mood and sociality in humans has been observed following propofol-induced anesthesia. Other authors reported an open-label study of repeated dosing of propofol in treatment-resistant depression in which several patients experienced sustained improvement. Recently, we reported th

Infection risks of city canal swimming events in the Netherlands in 2016.

INTRODUCTION: Swimming events in city canals are gaining popularity in the Netherlands, even though canal water is usually not officially designated for recreational use. Knowledge regarding the risk of infection after swimming in canals is limited. An outbreak was reported in 2015 following a canal swimming event in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Local governments were concerned about the health risks of such events. In order to assess the safety of canal swimming, the Public Health Service (PHS) prospectively investigated two city canal swimming events in 2015. In 2016, we repeated this study, ai

Anxiolytic effects of buspirone and MTEP in the Porsolt Forced Swim Test.

Traditionally, a reduction in floating behavior or immobility in the Porsolt forced swim test (FST) is employed as a predictor of antidepressant efficacy. However, over the past several years, our studies of alcohol withdrawal-induced negative affect consistently indicate the coincidence of increased anxiety-related behaviors on various behavioral tests with reduced immobility in the FST. Further, this behavioral profile correlates with increased mGlu5 protein expression within limbic brain regions. As the role for mGlu5 in anxiety is well established, we hypothesized that the reduced immobili

Effect of Swim Training on the Physical Characteristics of Competitive Adolescent Swimmers.

BACKGROUND: Subacromial space distance and forward head and shoulder posture are common characteristics resulting from swim training. These alterations can cause abnormal scapular kinematics and positioning, potentially increasing compression of structures in the subacromial space and increasing the risk for the development of swimmer's shoulder. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of the swim training season on subacromial space distance and forward head and forward shoulder posture as well as to determine the relationship between these variables. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence,

Immobility in the forced swim test is adaptive and does not reflect depression.

The forced swim test is based on the progressive immobility a rodent displays when immersed in a beaker filled with water from where no escape is possible. While the test was originally designed to identify the antidepressant potential of drugs, over the past decade a rapidly growing number of publications (more than 2000) portray this immobility response anthropomorphically as a measure for depression and despair. This is incorrect. The response to the forced swim stressor should be considered for what it shows: a switch from active to passive behavior in the face of an acute stressor, aligne
