[Glucocorticoid and androgenic functions of the adrenal cortex and the state of the sympathetic-adrenal system in thyrotoxicosis with primary organic disease of the central nervous system].

In patients with thyrotoxicosis combined with primary affection of the central nervous system (CNS)-encephalitis, diencephalitis-there was revealed, like in common thyrotoxicosis, an increased production by the adrenal cortex of hydrocortisone, its intensified transformation and inactivation, reduced production of 17-ketosteroid chiefly due to the fall of dehydroepiandrosterone content, an increased urinary excretion of adrenaline and a decreased-of noradrenaline. The use of functional test with the ACTH administration demonstrated organic affection of the CNS to sharply aggravate the weakenin

Acute renovascular hypertension in conscious dogs. Interaction of the renin-angiotensin system and sympathetic nervous system in systemic hemodynamics and regional blood flow responses.

The effects of acute renovascular hypertension on the sympathetic nervous system, regional blood flow and cardiac function were studied in conscious dogs submitted to renal artery occlusion by inflation of a cuff implanted previously around one renal artery. We then compared the alterations in plasma renin and catecholamine levels and in the various hemodynamic parameters induced by those maneuvers in intact dogs, to those in dogs pretreated with alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor blockers. Subsequently, the converting enzyme inhibitor teprotide was administered to inhibit angiotensin formati…

Psychological stress induces dysfunction in the lacrimal gland through the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Chronic psychosocial stress is increasingly recognized as a key risk factor for dry eye disease, potentially because of its disruption of the circadian transcriptome and lacrimal gland function, which impacts eye health. In this study, we test this hypothesis by using two mouse models (high platform and restraint experiments) of psychological stress and report that both models uniquely alter the circadian transcriptome and signaling pathways of the lacrimal gland. Psychosocial stress significantly affects the normal rhythmic oscillations of extraorbital lacrimal gland (ELG) immune cell traffic

Role of the sympathetic nervous system in cancer-associated cachexia and tumor progression in tumor-bearing BALB/c mice.

BACKGROUND: Adipose and muscle tissue wasting outlines the cachectic process during tumor progression. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is known to promote tumor progression and research suggests that it might also contribute to cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) energetic expenditure through fat wasting. METHODS: We sympathectomized L5178Y-R tumor-bearing male BALB/c mice by intraperitoneally administering 6-hydroxydopamine to evaluate morphometric, inflammatory, and molecular indicators of CAC and tumor progression. RESULTS: Tumor burden was associated with cachexia indicators, including…

Central Nervous System Actions of Leptin Improve Cardiac Function After Ischemia-Reperfusion: Roles of Sympathetic Innervation and Sex Differences.

Background Therapeutic strategies for preventing paradoxical reperfusion injury after myocardial ischemia are limited. We tested whether central nervous system actions of leptin induce important protective effects on cardiac function and metabolism after myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, the role of cardiac sympathetic innervation in mediating these effects, and whether there are major sex differences in the cardioprotective effects of chronic central nervous system leptin infusion. Methods and Results Myocardial I/R was induced by temporary ligation of the left descending coronary

Amygdaloid kindled seizures can induce functional and pathological changes in thymus of rat: role of the sympathetic nervous system.

The present study sought to determine the effects of long-term kindled seizures of the basal amygdala upon immune function in rat, utilizing … iferative response to T-cell mitogens. To determine whether these effects were mediated through the sympathetic nervous system, animals were treated with guanethidine, which blocked the development of epithelial cell thymomas, while mifepristone treatment, employed to determine the possible role of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, was ineffective in attenuating thymoma deve …

Naloxone and haemorrhagic hypotension in rats. Evidence against sympathetic nervous system as the primary mediator of improved cardiovascular haemodynamics.

Release of endogenous opiate-like substances seem to occur in different forms of stress. Earlier studies have shown that the opiate antagonist, naloxone, has a positive effect on cardiac performance and blood pressure in animals with haemorrhagic shock. In the present study, we have examined the involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in this response. Two groups of anaesthetized normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats were studied. Both groups were bled rapidly (about 5 min) down to an arterial pressure of 50 mmHg and were kept at that level for 30 min. At the end of the 30-min bleeding period, …

High-Phosphate-Induced Hypertension: The Pathogenic Role of Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23) Signaling in Sympathetic Nervous System Activation.

Hypertension remains a major public health concern globally. Accumulating evidence suggests that dietary phosphate (Pi) and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), a phosphaturic hormone, are involved in blood pressure regulation. Experimental studies have shown that excess Pi consumption, largely from inorganic Pi used as a preservative or flavor enhancer in processed foods, and increased FGF23 may contribute to vascular abnormalities, thereby promoting hypertension. Importantly, recent animal studies have demonstrated that peripheral FGF23 can cross the blood-brain barrier and stimulate FGF rec

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity risk modeling based on transients in time series describing the autonomic nervous system and cerebral hemodynamics.

PURPOSE: Overstimulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the acute phase after traumatic brain injury (TBI) may lead to paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) syndrome. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the relationship between ANS activity and cerebral hemodynamics on the development of PSH syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 41 TBI patients admitted to Wroclaw University Hospital (Poland). Among them, 14 were classified as at risk for PSH based on the probabilistic Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity Assessment Measure (PSH-AM), with

Molecular mechanisms and therapeutic implications of the sympathetic nervous system in bone-related disorders: a brain-bone axis perspective.

The global aging crisis has increased the prevalence of skeletal disorders, necessitating innovative therapeutic strategies. This review employs the brain-bone axis (BBA) framework to examine the role of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) in bone metabolism. The research systematically elucidates the molecular mechanisms by which the SNS mediates signaling pathways through neurofibers and neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine, dopamine, neuropeptide Y, and leptin, regulating interactions between bone-related cells to maintain skeletal homeostasis. It also identifies the pathological asso…

Cerebral ischemia increases bone marrow CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ regulatory T cells in mice via signals from sympathetic nervous system.

Recent evidence has shown that an increase in CD4(+)CD25(+)FoxP3(+) regulatory T (Treg) cells may contribute to stroke-induced immunosuppression. However, the molecular mechanisms that underlie this increase in Treg cells remain unclear. Here, we used a transient middle cerebral artery occlusion model in mice and specific pathway inhibitors to demonstrate that stroke activates the sympathetic nervous system, which was abolished by 6-OHDA. The consequent activation of β2-adrenergic receptor (AR) signaling increased prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) level in bone marrow. β2-AR antagonist prevented the upr…

Sympathetic nervous system plays a major role in acute cold/restraint stress inhibition of host resistance to Listeria monocytogenes.

Morphine injected around the stellate ganglion does not modulate the sympathetic nervous system nor does it provide pain relief.

Six patients with a presumptive diagnosis of upper limb reflex sympathetic dystrophy and 1 patient with anaesthesia dolorosa had pain and sy … rt-term pain relief in 4 out of 7 patients. Morphine did not produce any demonstrable effect on the sympathetic nervous system nor did it provide pain relief for any patient. Thus these data do not support injection of morphine around the stellate ganglion as it neither modulated sympathetic activity nor provided pain relief.
