Prolonged western equine encephalitis viremia in the Texas tortoise (Gopherus berlandieri).

Subcutaneous inoculation of 34 Texas tortoises (Gopherus berlandieri) with either of two strains of Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE) virus resulted in prolonged viremia of up to 105 days' duration. Peak viremia titers exceeded 10(6) suckling mouse intracranial lethal doses per milliliter. The length of the previremic period, the maximum viremia level attained, and the duration of viremia were markedly affected by environmental temperature. Higher temperatures (30 degrees C) shortened the previremic period and the duration of viremia and elevated the maximum viremia level. Lower temperatures h…

Laboratory studies of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus in equines, Texas, 1971.

During the summer and fall of 1971, epizootic and epidemic Venezuelan equine encephalitis was detected in Texas. Isolates of epizootic (IB) and vaccine (TC-83) strains were distinguished by virulence of the former for guinea pigs. Vaccine virus was isolated from 1 to 14 days after vaccination and neutralization tests demonstrated the appearance of antibody about a week after vaccination. Viremia titers of subtype IB in horses ranged from 2.2 to 8.3 log10 suckling mouse intracranial 50% lethal doses per ml. Of 101 equines from which Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (IB or TC-83) strains wer…

Rural Hospital Closures and Mortality From Time-Sensitive Conditions in Texas.

IMPORTANCE: Rural hospital closures in the US have accelerated since 2010, with Texas experiencing more rural closures than any other state. Whether closures are associated with population-level mortality remains unclear, and rural hospital closures in Texas have not been examined. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between rural hospital closures in Texas and county-level mortality from 4 time-sensitive conditions: acute myocardial infarction, stroke, sepsis, and asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This county-year cohort study of Texas cou…

Patient portal messaging patterns among Spanish-speaking patients in North Texas.

BACKGROUND: Patient portal messaging connects patients with their healthcare teams but is underused by Spanish-speaking patients. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate content and use patterns of portal messaging among Spanish-speaking patients to inform future implementation strategies to increase portal messaging. METHODS: We evaluated messaging use patterns among a random sample of adults with an EHR-designated Spanish language preference across three diverse healthcare systems in Texas: an academic medical center, a public safety-net institution, and a regional, integrated community health system. Eligibl…

Genomic Characterization of a Locally Transmitted Leishmania mexicana Isolate from Texas.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis, which is caused by Leishmania species transmitted by sandflies, is increasingly recognized in subtropical, higher-resource regions, including the southern United States. The first whole-genome sequence of Leishmania mexicana (L. mexicana) is reported from an autochthonous US case in a 3-year-old boy from Ellis County, Texas, with no travel history. Genomic DNA was sequenced using Illumina (San Diego, CA) technology. Phylogenomic analysis of nuclear and mitochondrial single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) confirmed the isolate as L. mexicana, clustering within the L. me…

Infant Deaths After Texas' 2021 Ban on Abortion in Early Pregnancy.

IMPORTANCE: Prior observational research has shown that infants born in states with more abortion restrictions are more likely to die during infancy. It is unclear how recent and more severe abortion bans in the US have impacted infant mortality. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether Texas Senate Bill 8 (SB8), which banned abortions after embryonic cardiac activity and did not allow exemptions for congenital anomalies, is associated with infant mortality in the state of Texas. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study of all recorded infant deaths from the state of Texas …

Trends in HPV-associated cancer incidence in Texas medically underserved regions.

BACKGROUND: While cervical cancer incidence rates (IR) in the United States have dropped in the last 20 years, non-cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) associated cancers increased. Many people in Texas (TX) live in medically underserved areas and have higher risk of developing HPV-associated cancers. Since previous studies of these regions focused on cervical cancer, we included other HPV-associated cancers in our analysis of IR in East TX and the TX-Mexico Border compared to other TX regions. METHODS: Cancer data from 2006 to 2019 were obtained from the TX Cancer Registry. Cases of HPV-assoc…

Seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in white-tailed deer from Texas.

Lyme Disease is caused by the bacterial pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi, and is transmitted by the tick-vector Ixodes scapularis. It is the most prevalent arthropod-borne disease in the United States. To determine the seroprevalence of B. burgdorferi antibodies in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from Texas, we analyzed serum samples (n = 1493) collected during the 2001-2015 hunting seasons, using indirect ELISA. Samples with higher sero-reactivity (0.803 and above) than the negative control group (0.662) were further tested using a more specific standardized western immunoblot assay t…

Continued evolution of West Nile virus, Houston, Texas, USA, 2002-2012.

We investigated the genetics and evolution of West Nile virus (WNV) since initial detection in the United States in 1999 on the basis of continual surveillance studies in the Houston, Texas, USA, metropolitan area (Harris County) as a surrogate model for WNV evolution on a national scale. Full-length genomic sequencing of 14 novel 2010-2012 WNV isolates collected from resident birds in Harris County demonstrates emergence of 4 independent genetic groups distinct from historical strains circulating in the greater Houston region since 2002. Phylogenetic and geospatial analyses of the 2012 WNV is…

Bm86 midgut protein sequence variation in South Texas cattle fever ticks.

BACKGROUND: Cattle fever ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and R. (B.) annulatus, vector bovine and equine babesiosis, and have significantly expanded beyond the permanent quarantine zone established in South Texas. Currently, there are no vaccines approved for use within the United States for controlling these vectors. Vaccines developed in Australia and Cuba based on the midgut antigen Bm86 have variable efficacy against cattle fever ticks. A possible explanation for this variation in vaccine efficacy is amino acid sequence divergence between the recombinant Bm86 vaccine component a…
