A systematic scoping review and textual narrative synthesis of the qualitative evidence related to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

INTRODUCTION: This systematic scoping review sought to summarise and synthesise the qualitative evidence on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) to understand the experiences of AIS, and of its diagnosis and treatment, and effective coping strategies to inform directions for future research. METHOD: A systematic scoping review and textual narrative synthesis was undertaken. Qualitative or mixed-methods studies with extractable qualitative data were included if participants had AIS, and patient or patient relative perspectives about AIS or its treatment were reported. RESULTS: Fifteen papers

Clinical interventions to improve adherence to urate-lowering therapy in patients with gout: a systematic review.

The aim of this study was to systematically review and compare the quantitative effect of clinical interventions designed to improve adherence to urate-lowering therapy. MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science were searched for interventional studies reporting quantitative adherence to urate-lowering therapy information as an endpoint. Intervention details, quantitative adherence information, clinical outcome and cost-effectiveness data were extracted. Risk of bias was assessed. From 4721 records, 11 studies (3 randomised and 8 observational) met the inclusion criteria. Pharmacist-

Does Texting While Walking Affect Gait's Plantar Pressure Parameters?

BACKGROUND: This study aims to examine the possible effects of mobile phone use on plantar pressure and spatiotemporal parameters during walking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty volunteers (18 males and 12 females) participated in the study. A 10-m walking path was prepared, and a messaging connection was established. They were asked to write three posts without word or character mistakes and participants walked on the path walk as much as they wanted on the trail to make sure they were walking at their own pace. The gait's spatiotemporal parameters and plantar pressure parameters were recorded

"It reminds me and motivates me": Human-centered design and implementation of an interactive, SMS-based digital intervention to improve early retention on antiretroviral therapy: Usability and acceptability among new initiates in a high-volume, public clinic in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Early retention of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in antiretroviral therapy (ART) programs is critical to improve individual clinical outcomes and viral load suppression. Although many mobile health (mHealth) interventions aim to improve retention in care, there is still lack of evidence on mHealth success or failure, including from patient's perspectives. We describe the human-centered design (HCD) process and assess patient usability and acceptability of a two-way texting (2wT) intervention to improve early retention among new ART initiates at Lighthouse Trust clinic in Lilongwe,

Distraction From Smartphones Changed Pedestrians' Walking Behaviors in Open Areas.

The prevalence of phone use has become a major concern for pedestrian safety. Using smartphones while walking reduces pedestrians' ability to perceive the environment by increasing their cognitive, manual, and visual demands. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of common phone tasks (i.e., reading, tapping, gaming) on walking behaviors during outdoor walking. Nineteen young adults were instructed to complete four walking conditions (walking only, walking-reading, walking-tapping, and walking-gaming) along an open corridor. Results showed that all three phone tasks increased

This article re-examines the popular concept of Internet addiction, discusses the key problems associated with it, and proposes possible alt … s addictive. The Internet can no longer be separated from other potentially overused media, such as text messaging and gaming platforms. Internet addiction is conceptually too heterogeneous because it pertains to a variety of very different behaviors. Internet addiction should be replaced by terms that refer to the specific behaviors (eg, gaming, gambling, or se …

"Text It" program to track falls in patients with Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Falls are a significant problem among older adults with Alzheimer's disease, leading to high rates of fracture, hospitalization, and death. Tracking falls in older adults, particularly those with cognitive impairment, is a clinical and research challenge. METHODS: This prospective pilot study evaluated the feasibility of a text message program to track falls among patients with dementia. We also compared this technique with the calendar method of fall data collection. RESULTS: There was a 96% completion rate of text messaging and 100% of calendars; however, the text-gathered da…

Impact of digital health interventions for adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus on health literacy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that living with diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1DM) in adolescent age is particularly challenging and difficult to manage. A high level of health literacy is important to prevent and avoid debilitating complications. Despite the increasing prevalence and incidence of T1DM by adolescent and the large use of digital health interventions, little is known about the association between this use and health literacy. This systematic review provides an overview on the impact of digital health interventions for adolescents with type 1 diabetes on health literacy and derive recom

Maintenance of physical activity after cardiac rehabilitation (FAIR): study protocol for a feasibility trial.

INTRODUCTION: To enhance health and prevent secondary consequences for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), maintenance of an active lifestyle following participation in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is important. However, levels of physical activity often decrease after completion of a structured CR programme. Models that support long-term behaviour change with a sustained level of physical activity are imperative. The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a mobile health intervention based on the Health Action Process Approach theoretical model of behaviour change in patie

Risk of Injury and Mortality among Driver Victims Involved in Single-Vehicle Crashes in Taiwan: Comparisons between Vehicle Types.

Vehicle-type specific injury severity has rarely been investigated mainly because of a lack of such information in hospital-based studies that normally exclude those who are severely injured and die on the scene. No study has been conducted either on driver characteristics in single vehicle crashes in Taiwan according to vehicle type. This was the first population-based study aiming to describe demographic characteristics in association with vehicle-specific rates of injury and fatality among driver victims involved in single-vehicle crashes in Taiwan. We presented sex and age-specific number

mHealth Interventions for Lifestyle and Risk Factor Modification in Coronary Heart Disease: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Self-management of lifestyle and cardiovascular disease risk factors is challenging in older patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). SMS text messaging could be a potential support tool for self-management and the most affordable and accessible method through a mobile phone. High-quality evidence had been lacking, and previous studies evaluated the effects of SMS text messaging on the subjective measures of short-term outcomes. Recently, a large-sized randomized controlled trial in Australia reported promising findings on the objective measures upon 6-month follow-up. However, …

The Role of Sexting on the Perception of Image-Based Sexual Abuse.

Gender-based violence is a widespread phenomenon that significantly impacts many women around the world. Among the different forms that it might take, image-based sexual abuse represents one of the most common forms nowadays. According to the literature, sexting-the sharing of sexually explicit messages or images-is one of the most important risk factors for image-based sexual abuse because sexts can be forwarded or published without the authorization of the originator. Nevertheless, sexting can play a role in sexual and relational development and serve as a first step in experimenting with se
