OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the computed tomograph (CT) findings of IgG4-related disease (RD) involving soft tissue adjacent to thoracic vertebrae.
METHODS: The chest and abdomen CT findings of 22 cases of IgG4-RD proved by orbital pathology and/or laboratory examination were retrospectively reviewed. The CT findings of paravertebral soft tissue in posterior mediastinum and the corresponding follow-up after therapy were primarily observed.
RESULTS: Among them, there were 8 males and 2 females with an average age of 57.6 (42-70) years. CT showed diffuse thickening of soft tissue in thoracic parave

Necrotizing soft tissue infections are caused by a variety of pathogens and may affect different types of soft tissue. Even today mortality and lethality are very high. The primary symptoms of necrotizing soft tissue infections are local pain out of proportion, swelling, erythema and crepitation in cases of subcutaneous gas. A systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is often associated. During the last decades early recognition and initiation of an adequate therapy were able to reduce lethality to an average of 20%. The physical examination remains the diagnostic gold standard and may b

In Germany more than 120,000 soft tissue infections are treated in hospital per year. Articles about soft tissue infections caused by Strept. pyogenes, presented in the lay press as "flesh-eating bacteria", accentuate this picture. Among these soft tissue infections, necrotising fasciitis and the associated "toxic shock syndrome" and "toxic shock-like syndrome" remain a challenge to the surgeon. The most important role of surgery is to achieve the right diagnosis and introduce definitive therapy in time. Central to surgical therapy is immediate incision and open drainage. Our own experience in

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the soft tissue effects of Herbst appliance in Class II malocclusion patients treated in three different craniofacial growth phases: prepubertal (PRE), circumpubertal (CIR), and postpubertal (POS).
METHODS: In total, 95 patients with Class II Division 1 malocclusion previously treated with a Herbst appliance were analyzed. Through the cervical vertebral maturation stages method, patients were allocated into three groups depending on the growth craniofacial phase at the beginning of treatment: PRE, CIR, and POS. Seventeen cephalometric measures were eval

BACKGROUND: A primary goal in traumatic lower extremity amputation management is preservation of limb length. Energy expenditure during ambulation directly correlates with residual limb length, preserved limb segments, and stable joint preservation. An additional factor affecting limb function includes achieving adequate residual limb soft tissue coverage. This report describes techniques for achieving a stable soft tissue envelope to facilitate limb length and joint preservation.
METHODS: A series of traumatic amputation cases with inadequate soft tissue coverage are reviewed. Concepts from

The intraoral lipoma is a benign, slowly growing, painless soft tissue neoplasia, which can cause esthetic or functional problems for the patient, depending on its size. All parts of the body can be affected, whereas the oral cavity is rarely involved. Clinically, the tumour often exhibits an exophytic growth pattern, a soft consistency, a broad base connected to the underlying tissue, and frequently has a reddish-yellowish colour. Instead of a superficial mucosal involvement, a deep localization in the soft tissues is also possible. Depending on the localization of the tumour, the diagnosis a

Radiation therapy is an integral part of the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas in adults. The indication for additional radiation therapy has usually been based on known general prognostic factors, such as tumour size, localisation, grading and (anticipated) resection margin. Increasing attention has recently been paid to the role of the histological subtype. Moreover, radiation therapy techniques have distinctly improved, so that in some localisations adequate treatment has become possible for the first time. This review firstly summarises general treatment principles of radiation therapy in

Beyond the traditional monotherapy of connective tissue grafting, the combination of orthodontic therapy, soft-tissue grafting, and bone grafting with biologics may provide ideal treatment for complex recession defects with root prominence, thin tissues, and buccal plate dehiscences. The authors propose the benefits of performing a preoperative evaluation of complex mucogingival defects with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) technology and then considering surgical management with modalities like bone grafting and orthodontics in addition to the classic soft-tissue grafting approach. Photobiomodulation also known as low-level laser therapy has emerged as a non-invasive approach to enhance post-surgical outcomes by stimulating cellular activity and promoting tissue regeneration. This randomized clinical research included 40 patients requiring single-tooth implants in the posterior mandible. PBM significantly improved ISQ values at all post-operative time points (p < 0.01). Soft tissue healing scores were also superior in the PBM set (p < 0.05). No adverse events occurred. PBM significantly enhances early implant stability and accelerates soft tissue healing, supporting its

PURPOSE: Soft tissue management is of paramount importance in ankle surgery. As such, full thickness necrosis of the soft tissue envelope represents a severe complication following total ankle joint arthroplasty (TAA) potentially leading to implant exposure, infection and thus, substantially compromised patient outcomes. One of the main factors leading to soft tissue complications is an undetermined arterial perfusion of the lower leg or ankle joint. We report on clinical cases suffering soft tissue complications following TAA with the respective plastic surgical therapy regimen and present a

Hypercalcinosis of the hand in association with scleroderma represents a rare and benign soft-tissue calcification. Reported are two cases of symmetric affection of soft-tissue layers of both hands in association with scleroderma. Superinfection and exulcerations necessitated surgical treatment. Diagnosis, therapy, and progress are described.

Abscesses, erysipelas, or uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections (phlegmons) are common soft tissue infections encountered by dermatologists. Their definition, diagnosis, and treatment are summarized here based on the updated German-language guidelines. Cutaneous abscesses are encapsulated, pus-filled cavities which, depending on their location in deep or superficial skin-layers, cause solid to fluctuating, more or less erythematous, painful swelling under usually intact epidermis. Superficial and mature abscesses reveal visible collection of pus. Primary and often sufficient therapy co

We aimed to retrospectively evaluate the skin and soft tissue complications secondary to procedures in acute leukemia patients with and without catheters. Eighty-seven acute leukemia patients (75 acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 12 acute myeloid leukemia ) were included. There were 30 patients with 37 catheter use (6 port, 31 Hickman catheter) and 57 patients without catheter. In patients with catheters, skin and soft tissue complications were seen in 20 (66%) children. The most frequent complication was cellulitis (55%). In the patients without catheter, skin and soft tissue complications were s

Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are aggressive severe soft tissue infection that cause rapid and widespread infection and necrosis of the skin and soft tissues and are highly lethal. NSTIs include necrotizing cellulitis, adipositis, fasciitis and myositis/myonecrosis and have significant potential for extensive soft tissue and limb loss. Early diagnosis and treatment of NSTIs remains the cornerstone of therapy. Timely aggressive surgical debridement and early appropriate antibiotic treatment are required for a successful outcome and clinical cure. Mortality rate has decreased from 2

The reconstruction after soft tissue sarcoma resection is sometimes essential to enable radical R0 resection, limb salvage, satisfactory functional outcomes and timely adjuvant treatment. In a retrospective cohort of 76 soft tissue reconstructions of the lower limbs, predominantly following external resections, wound coverage was consistently performed in a staged manner with a mean interval of 18 days; in more than half of the cases this interval was ≤14 days. A comprehensive review of the scientific literature on soft tissue reconstruction after soft tissue sarcoma resection was conducted. K

Legionella spp. predominantly Legionella pneumophila, are recognized respiratory pathogens, while soft tissue infections caused by non-pneumophila species remain exceptionally rare. We present the first documented case of L. maceachernii soft tissue infection in an infant worldwide. The patient presented with fever accompanied by occipital, anterior thoracic, and wrist masses. Diagnosis was confirmed through metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of tissue samples with histopathological correlation. Initial empiric therapy with vancomycin and cefotaxime yielded no clinical improvement.

Although avulsion fractures of the pediatric knee are uncommon, they are important injuries to recognize because they are frequently associated with adjacent soft-tissue and osteocartilaginous abnormalities. Related injuries, which include entrapment of soft-tissue structures, intra-articular fracture extension, and intra-articular loose bodies, can complicate or alter therapy. The most commonly affected soft-tissue structures include the cruciate ligaments, collateral ligaments and supporting tendons, and extensor mechanism and retinacula. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to review avul

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pain is one of the most feared and most common symptoms of cancer, experienced by 38-85% of patients. Pain in terminally ill cancer patients is a multidimensional experience caused by a diverse array of factors - cancer itself, its treatment or other causes. Studies have shown a high incidence of myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) in patients with cancer and the knowledge of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) is important to address and manage existing pain, and to prevent the recurrence of pain. This review aims to summarize recent advances in interventions for managing MPS in p
