Role of nuclear grooves in the diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma. A quantitative assessment on fine needle aspiration smears.

Thirty-four cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma and 69 control cases consisting of 17 follicular neoplasms, 5 Hürthle cell neoplasms, 7 medullary carcinomas, 6 thyrotoxic goiters, 19 chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis cases, 3 subacute thyroiditis cases and 12 colloid goiter cases were studied for nuclear grooves. Such grooves were seen in 100% of papillary carcinoma and in 75-100% of other thyroid disorders, but their number was strikingly higher in papillary carcinoma. A quantitative assessment for nuclear grooves was made based on counting 500 follicular cells in hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-s

Thyroglobulin and calcitonin immunoreactivity in canine thyroid carcinomas.

Although thyroid gland neoplasms are well-recognized entities in dogs, the diagnosis and classification of these tumors often is difficult. In contrast to human thyroid carcinomas, which are predominantly of the papillary or follicular types, a relatively high proportion of the canine tumors contain compact cellular areas and resemble, to some extent, medullary thyroid carcinomas. In order to assess the value of immunohistochemical techniques in the identification and classification of these neoplasms, 21 canine thyroid carcinomas were examined for the presence of thyroglobulin and calcitonin

Initial Diagnosis of Hematologic Malignancies Identified Through Thyroid Fine-Needle Aspiration.

INTRODUCTION: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the thyroid is crucial in diagnosing thyroid malignancies. While secondary malignancies involving the thyroid constitute only a minority of cases, results from thyroid FNA can offer the initial insight into a systemic process. This retrospective study aims to investigate first-time diagnoses of hematologic malignancies diagnosed by thyroid FNA within our institution in the past 4 years. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of first-time hematologic neoplasm diagnoses in our pathology database at the University of Colorado Hospital. A total

Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) of thyroid: a case report and literature review.

Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is a rare malignant neoplasm that occurs in the thyroid gland, or head and neck. This tumor arises from either ectopic thymus tissue or remnants of branchial pouches, which retain the potential to differentiate along the thymus line. Clinical presentation and imaging can be consistent with a malignant lesion such as thyroid cancer or thymic carcinoma. Immunohistochemical staining with CD5 can differentiate CASTLE from other malignant thyroid neoplasms. A 54-year-old male had initially presented with a painless, left neck mass for 3 months.…

Multiple myeloma involving the thyroid cartilage.

Multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma constitute a continuous disease spectrum of plasma cell neoplasms. In the larynx, although extramedullary plasmacytoma in the supraglottic region has been sometimes reported, plasma cell neoplasm with involvement of the thyroid cartilage is extremely rare. We report a case of multiple myeloma involving the thyroid cartilage. A 72-year-old male patient presented with a pathological fracture of the cervical vertebrae. CT scan revealed low-density areas within the thyroid cartilage, but the laryngeal mucosa and submucosal so

[Thyroid gland and carcinoma of the hypopharyngeal-laryngeal region].

The thyroid gland harbours many diseases which require a surgical treatment; the gland may also be involved by some secondary malignant neoplasms. Such type of involvement by laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers is more often due to direct extension rather than metastases. In this paper the Authors report their experience of tumoral involvement of the thyroid gland in 35 patients with laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer observed from 1986 to 1990. All patients had an epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx or hypopharynx that required an hemithyroidectomy (always plus isthmectomy) or an isthmectomy

Thyroid carcinoma in childhood is very rare. The Authors report the features of this neoplasm versus other period of the life. There were no undifferentiated type of neoplasm in 69 cases. Almost all the tumors were well differentiated epithelial types especially papillary and only few cases were non epithelial differentiated tumors. Prognosis, that is better on childhood than other ages, depends, besides surgical indications (total thyroidectomy with lymphadenectomy for epithelial types of neoplasm to metabolic radiotherapy even if metastatized. Solitary fibrous tumor of the thyroid gland: a report of two cases with an analysis of their clinical and pathological features.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the thyroid gland are rare soft-tissue neoplasms and only 24 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We describe two patients who underwent surgery for rapidly growing thyroid nodes of uncertain nature on cytology. At the final histological examination, they proved to be fibrous tumors of the thyroid gland that were CD-34, BCL2, CD-99, and Ki-67 positive, like other known cases. Neither of these two cases have recurred so far.

Study of the C228T mutation of the TERT promoter in thyroid aspirative punctures of IV category of the Bethesda classification.

INTRODUCTION: Since the C228T mutation in theTERT promoter (TERTp) has been identified almost exclusively in thyroid malignancies, our objective was to study the usefulness of its determination in thyroid fine needle aspirations (FNA) of the IV category of the Bethesda classification (B.IV). METHODOLOGY: From the FNAs performed between 1993 and 2015, we selected those with a diagnosis of B.IV or equivalent and subsequent thyroidectomy. A retrospective study of the C228T mutation in TERTp was performed by pyrosequencing in neoplastic cases (adenomas, low risk neoplasms and carcinomas), both fr

The Genetics of Familial Neoplastic Thyroid Disease and Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

Inherited thyroid and parathyroid diseases represent a small but clinically significant subset of endocrine neoplasms, often associated with identifiable genetic mutations. Familial medullary thyroid cancer is linked to RET mutations and frequently occurs with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes, requiring early diagnosis and prophylactic intervention. Nonmedullary familial thyroid cancers are more heterogenous with unclear genetic drivers and variable inheritance patterns. Syndromic forms carry increased thyroid cancer risk necessitating targeted surveillance. Familial parathyroid disease

Primary thyroid lymphoma: case series with literature review.

Non Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) of the thyroid are rare thyroid neoplasms. The majority of histopathologic types are extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type and, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Most of them arise in a background of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and patients mostly present with a rapidly enlarging thyroid mass and with pressure symptoms. Treatment depends on the histological subtype and stage of the disease and includes radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The prognosis usually is favorable with proper treatment. Herein, we discuss the…

Solitary extramedullary plasmocytoma of the thyroid: a case report and histological approach to plasma cells infiltrate in the thyroid gland.

BACKGROUND: Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP) is a rare malignant neoplasm arising from plasma cells. SEP mostly occurs in the upper respiratory tract. Thyroid gland is rarely affected (<78 cases). METHODS/RESULTS: We describe the case of a 78-year-old woman presenting a rapidly enlarging palpable thyroid mass. Neck computed tomography scan showed enlargement of both thyroid lobes. Laboratory tests were normal, including serum protein level with no monoclonal gamma globulin peak. Cytology was suspicious for lymphoma. Biopsy showed an infiltrating neoplasm composed of atypical tumor c

A case of metastatic rectal adenocarcinoma diagnosed by thyroid cytology.

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of the thyroid gland has been widely used for the evaluation of thyroid nodules. Most of the nodules are primary thyroid lesions. However, up to 4% of thyroid FNA may harbor a metastatic neoplasm. The metastases are most commonly from lung, kidney, breast, and skin. Metastatic colorectal cancers are also seen in thyroid but less common. Here we report the cytologic features, differential diagnosis and clinical implications of a metastatic rectal adenocarcinoma to the thyroid gland diagnosed by FNA.

Poorly differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid.

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) are the most common malignant tumour of the salivary glands. MECs have also been reported to occur in atypical sites. Primary MECs of the thyroid gland are extremely rare, accounting for 0.5% of thyroid malignancies with approximately 48 cases reported in the literature. In most cases, these are low-grade neoplasms with good long-term prognosis. We present the case of a 74-year-old patient with poorly differentiated MEC of the thyroid gland, which behaved aggressively resulting in rapid decline and death of the patient. The exact pathophysiology of the disease

Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma in the Lymph Nodes Without Identifiable Primary Tumor in the Thyroid.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common thyroid neoplasm. While its initial presentation as metastasis is not uncommon, metastasis to the lymph nodes without a primary tumor is extremely rare. Here we report an unusual case of metastatic PTC within the lymph nodes without an identifiable primary tumor in the thyroid gland. We report a case of a 45-year-old man who presented with neck swelling detected on a routine physical examination. The patient was asymptomatic, and his thyroid function was normal. Ultrasound of the thyroid revealed a well-circumscribed isoechoic 4.5 cm mass in
