[Celiac disease and autoimmune thyroiditis. Description of a case].

It has been known that there is a more than fortuitous association between coeliac disease and a whole range of autoimmune conditions. At present there are only very small numbers of cases reported with childhood coeliac disease and thyroiditis. The Authors refer to a seven year old girl with documented coeliac disease who developed an autoimmune thyroiditis with glandular hypofunction, an unusual feature still rarely described.

[A case of polymyositis in autoimmune thyroiditis with hyperthyroidism].

A young woman, during an autoimmune thyroiditis with hyperthyroidism, suffered from progressive proximal weakness at her four limbs. The diagnosis of a concomitant polymyositis was indicated by a marked increase of plasma CPK, myopathic findings at EMG and a clearcut picture of inflammatory alterations at muscle biopsy. Steroid therapy brought a full recovery of both thyroid and muscular symptoms. In the following months, the patient suffered from a second episode of thyroiditis and subsequently from another poussée of polymyositis. The possible pathogenesis underlying the unusual association

DNA content of Hurthle cell nodules in autoimmune thyroiditis.

Hurthle cells are found in thyroid neoplasms and in reactive nodules in thyroiditis or goitrogenic processes. Cytometric studies have evaluated Hurthle cell neoplasms but not their reactive counterparts. DNA content of Hurthle cells in 22 cases of autoimmune thyroiditis was measured by flow cytometry and image content of Hurthle cells in 22 cases of autoimmune thyroiditis was measured by flow cytometry and image processing using nuclei extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue after microdissection of the Hurthle cell nodules. All 22 autoimmune thyroiditis Hurthle cell nodules were diploid, incl

Induction of autoimmune thyroiditis in chickens by dietary iodine.

Clinical studies have suggested that excess dietary iodine promotes autoimmune thyroiditis; however, the lack of a suitable animal model has hampered investigation of the phenomenon. In this study, different amounts of potassium iodide were added to the diets of chicken strains known to be genetically susceptible to autoimmune thyroiditis. Administration of iodine during the first 10 weeks of life increased the incidence of the disease, as determined by histology and the measurement of autoantibodies to triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and thyroglobulin. Further support for the relation between io

The role of the spleen in experimental autoimmune thyroiditis.

We have investigated the role of the spleen in the humoral and cellular immune response of rats with experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) induced by immunization with thyroglobulin and Freund's complete adjuvant. Animals subjected to splenectomy within 4 days of immunization developed lower thyroglobulin antibody levels and less severe thyroiditis compared to sham operated controls. There was no impairment in the ability of the animals to recover spontaneously from the disease after splenectomy. Together with the results obtained using splenocyte infusions, this suggests that suppressor c

Thyroid transplantation developing autoimmune thyroiditis following thymectomy and irradiation.

Post-irradiation transplantation of normal thyroids under the renal capsule of syngenetic thymectomized and irradiated (Tx-X) rats leads to the development of thyroiditis in the ectopic grafted thyroids. A close correlation was observed between the extent of the lesions in the grafted and recipient's own thyroid. The histopathology of both grafted and recipient thyroid was similar and was characterized by infiltration with mononuclear cells together with some plasma cells. Conversely, grafting of affected thyroids from Tx-X rats to normal animals resulted in the regression of the lesion in the

The role of the thymus in spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis.

In two models of genetically determined, spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis, neonatal thymectomy increases the incidience and severity of disease. The simpliest explanation is that the thymus, or thymus-derived cells, normally exert a suppressive effect on the autoimmune response to thyroglobulin in addition to the helper function that is necessary to initiate the autoimmune reaction.

Factors affecting transfer of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis in rats.

Actively induced experimental autoimmune thyroiditis in inbred Lewis rats was comparable using standard Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) and Perrin's modification of FCA. However, adoptively transferred disease using lymph node cells from rats immunized with Perrin's FCA was significantly more severe. With this adjuvant, and pertussis vaccine as co-adjuvant, transfer was uniformly successful when at least 480 × 106 lymph node cells were taken 10 days after immunization and recipients were killed 3 days after transfer. Lymphocytic infiltrates were seen in recipient thyroids as early as 18 hours
