BACKGROUND: Rapid and high efficacy against ticks after attachment has the potential to aid in the prevention of tick-borne pathogen transmission. The objective of the study was to assess the speed-of-kill of Simparica Trio® against Ixodes ricinus.
METHODS: On Study Day 0, sixteen Beagle dogs were treated with placebo or Simparica Trio at the minimum approved dose (1.24 mg/kg sarolaner, 0.024 mg/kg moxidectin, 5 mg/kg pyrantel). Each dog was infested with 50 unfed viable adult I. ricinus. Efficacy was assessed by in situ tick counts at 12 hours and by counts with removal of the ticks at 24 ho

Ticks are vectors of a variety of diseases such as Lyme disease and Japanese spotted fever. We examined an 87-year-old female with multiple tick bites by at least 236 larval Amblyomma testudinarium infestations. Numerous tick bites are generally caused by the six-legged larvae, which were verified in this case by dermoscopy. The present case indicates the diagnostic usefulness of dermoscopy for six-legged larval tick bites.

We report Marie Galante as one of the Caribbean islands most heavily infested by the tropical bont tick (TBT) Amblyomma variegatum which is associated with two major diseases of ruminants: heartwater and dermatophilosis. In 2005, a survey was undertaken to assess the prevalence of TBT infestation in cattle, the prevalence of Ehrlichia ruminantium infection in TBTs, and the tick control measures implemented by livestock owners. A random sample of 195 cattle herds out of 1885 recorded on the island was investigated by thoroughly counting adult ticks on each animal and filling a questionnaire. A

Ticks are ectoparasitic arthropods that can transmit a variety of microorganisms to humans and animals during blood feeding, causing serious infectious disorders, including Lyme disease. Acaricides are pharmacologic agents that kill ticks. The emergence of acaricide-resistant ticks calls for alternative control strategies for ticks and tick-borne diseases. Many animals develop resistance to ticks after repeated infestations, but the nature of this acquired anti-tick immunity remains poorly understood. Here we investigated the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying acquired resistance to

The question of whether the known immunosuppressive effects of Babesia microti may disrupt the development of acquired resistance to its tick vector, Ixodes trianguliceps, in natural rodent hosts (Clethrionomys glareolus), and thus enhance the disease transmission potential, is addressed experimentally. The results show for the first time that natural hosts can acquire resistance to ticks; that this acquired resistance is manifested chiefly by a strongly density-dependent reduction in the percentage of attached larvae that engorge; that the density dependence is quantitatively similar whether

The physiological effects of the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, on moose, Alces alces, were investigated. Blood composition, weight gain, food intake and change in the hair coat of moose calves, four infested with D. albipictus larvae, and eight uninfested, were monitored. Infested moose groomed extensively, apparently in response to feeding nymphal and adult ticks, and developed alopecia. Other clinical signs included: chronic weight loss, anemia, hypoalbuminemia, hypophosphatemia, and transient decreases in serum aspartate transaminase and calcium during the period of nymphal and adult

Tick-borne relapsing fevers (TBRF) are caused by infection with Borrelia spirochetes and transmitted to humans by ticks. All except East African TBRF, caused by Borrelia duttonii, are known zoonoses. This widespread, endemic and pathogenic infection has only been found in humans and the Ornithodoros sp. soft tick vectors. We investigated the role of domestic animals as possible reservoirs of infection in a TBRF endemic region. Tick infestations in households and pigpens were investigated in the villages near Mvumi hospital in central Tanzania. Blood from chickens and pigs was examined by PCR a…

BACKGROUND: Fleas and ticks can be found globally and are of both veterinary and human health concern due to their ability to transmit various vector-borne diseases. Heavy flea and tick infestations can result in significant blood loss, while flea infestations can result in intense pruritus. The use of safe and effective ectoparasiticides in veterinary medicine is a crucial part of protecting both pets and humans from infestations and transmission of vector-borne diseases.
METHODS: The efficacy of a novel endectocide, Credelio Quattro, containing lotilaner, moxidectin, praziquantel, and pyran…

Ticks are obligate hematophagous parasites and pathogen vectors responsible for morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ixodes scapularis is a vector for at least seven pathogens relevant to human and animal health, including the Lyme disease microbe, Borrelia burgdorferi, and the causative agent of anaplasmosis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Tick-host interactions affect the maintenance of tick-borne pathogens in a population. Here, we report that repeated I. scapularis larval infestations on the wild host species Peromyscus leucopus lead to immune-mediated rejection of the tick, a phenomenon termed

Ixodid ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are known as primary vectors of many pathogens causing diseases in humans and animals. Ixodes ricinus is a common ectoparasite in Europe and birds are often hosts of subadult stages of the tick. From 2012 to 2013, 347 birds belonging to 43 species were caught and examined for ticks in three sites of Slovakia. Ticks and blood samples from birds were analysed individually for the presence of Rickettsia spp. and Coxiella burnetii by PCR-based methods. Only I. ricinus was found to infest birds. In total 594 specimens of bird-attached ticks were collected (451 larvae,

Amblyomma maculatum, the Gulf Coast tick, is a species of significant veterinary and public health importance, especially because it is a vector of important diseases, such as American canine hepatozoonosis and tidewater spotted fever. Amblyomma maculatum infests a wide range of vertebrates including livestock, dogs, cats, and humans. Two experimental studies were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of afoxolaner formulated in an oral tablet (NexGard®) against induced infestations of A. maculatum in dogs. These Good Clinical Practice (GCP) studies used a randomized, negative controlled and mask

The cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) spp. is a key vector of protozoa that cause bovine babesiosis. Largely eradicated from most of the United States, the cattle tick continues to infest south Texas, and recent outbreaks in this area may signal a resurgence of cattle tick populations despite current management efforts. An improved understanding of the dynamic ecology of cattle fever ticks along the U.S.-Mexico border is required to devise strategies for sustainable eradication efforts. Management areas of the cattle tick overlap considerably with dense, wide infestations of the non-nativ

Bartonella spp. infections are considered to be vector-borne zoonoses; ticks are suspected vectors of bartonellae. Migratory birds can disperse ticks infected with zoonotic pathogens such as Rickettsia and tick-borne encephalitis virus and possibly also Bartonella. Thus, in the present study 386 tick specimens collected in spring 2009 from migratory birds on the Mediterranean islands Capri and Antikythera were screened for Bartonella spp. RNA. One or more ticks were found on 2.7% of the birds. Most ticks were Hyalomma rufipes nymphs and larvae with mean infestation rates of 1.7 nymphs and 0.6

The objective of this study was to determine the species spectrum of ixodid ticks infesting birds in Free State Province, South Africa. To this end a large number of birds belonging to several species were examined for ticks and a total of 180 birds belonging to 39 species at 17 localities were infested, and ticks belonging to eight species were recovered. The immature stages of only two, namely Amblyomma marmoreum and Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, were sufficiently prevalent and numerous to safely assume that they regularly use birds as hosts. Helmeted guineafowls, Numida meleagris, were the m

The seasonal variation of the tick Boophilus microplus in the 'Região Metalúrgica' region of Minas Gerais state was studied using 26 Bos taurus (Holstein) x Bos indicus (Gir) calves, of which 16 animals were 3/4 Holstein x 1/4 Gir and 10 were 3/4 Gir x 1/4 Holstein. Monthly tick counts were made between March 1996 and March 1998 and, although B. microplus infestations occurred throughout the year, they were greater during the rainy season. Rainfall was the climatic factor that most affected the seasonal variation. The animals with a preponderance of Holstein blood presented infestations that w

Rhipicephalus microplus (R. microplus) is the most significant tick in cattle worldwide, including Mexico; however, its presence in sheep is infrequent and typically associated with accidental exposures in production systems where they coexist with infested cattle. The objective of this study is to describe R. microplus infestation in sheep from Yucatán, Mexico, and to determine their toxicological response to coumaphos, cypermethrin, and ivermectin (IVM). The animal population of the production unit under study was examined for the presence of ticks, revealing infestations in sheep and cattle
