Smokeless Tobacco Use, Cigarette Smoking, and Upper Aerodigestive Tract Cancers: A Case-Control Study in the Batna Region, Algeria, 2008-2011.

BACKGROUND: A significant proportion of the Algerian population uses tobacco products and is at risk of developing tobacco-associated cancers. AIMS: This case-control study reports on the association between tobacco use and the occurrence of upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) cancers in Batna, Algeria. METHODS: Incident primary UADT cancer cases in residents of Batna in 2008-2011 were identified using the regional tumor registry. One hospital and 1 population control were matched to each case by sex, year of birth, and residence. Information on tobacco use was collected, and odds ratios (ORs)

Construct and Predictive Validity of Three Measures of Intention to Quit Smoking: Findings From the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Netherlands Survey.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to compare the construct validity and the predictive validity of three instruments to measure intention to quit smoking: a Stages of Change measure, the Motivation To Stop Scale (MTSS), and a Likert scale. We used the Theory of Planned Behavior as theoretical framework. METHODS: We used data from the International Tobacco Control Netherlands Survey. We included smokers who participated in three consecutive survey waves (n = 980). We measured attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control in 2012, intention to quit with three instruments in 2…

Tobacco use and non-Hodgkin lymphoma: results from a population-based case-control study in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the association between tobacco use and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). METHODS: Tobacco-use data were collected during in-person interviews in a population-based case-control study of NHL (N=1593 patients, N=2515 controls) conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area between 1988 and 1995. Odds ratios (ORs) for HIV-negative participants were obtained from adjusted unconditional logistic regression models stratified by sex. RESULTS: NHL was not associated with overall tobacco use, intensity or duration of cigarette smoking in women or men. However, ORs were increased for NHL am

Effectiveness of Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Behavioral Intervention in Tobacco Cessation-A Tertiary Hospital-Based Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) on smokeless tobacco (SLT) users is underexplored in India, with prior research primarily focusing on smokers. This study assessed and compared the effectiveness of combining behavioral intervention (BI) and NRT with BI alone on smoking and SLT cessation. METHODS: This 1.5-year prospective, open-label, three-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Tobacco Cessation Clinic, SCB Dental College and Hospital, Odisha, India. The three intervention groups-BI, BI + nicotine patch, and BI + nicotine gum-

Implementation of school tobacco policies: The advocacy coalition approach. Protocol of the ADHAirE study, a cluster randomized controlled trial.

Secondary schools still struggle to enforce their tobacco policy and to keep their learning environment smoke-free. Yet, enforcement is the key to improve the effectiveness of those policies. This article describes the ADHAirE study which aims to reduce smoking at school through an improved enforcement of the school's tobacco policy. The ADHAirE study will be carried out during 2 years in 20 Belgian secondary schools. Schools will be randomized either in the experimental or the control group. Schools in the experimental group will create an advocacy coalition involving students, staff and the

Grey matter morphometry in young adult e-cigarette users, tobacco cigarette users & non-using controls.

Despite the rise in electronic cigarette use in recent years, the neurobiological effects of daily e-cigarette use versus smoking cigarettes in young adults remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the impact of regular, exclusive e-cigarette use on grey matter morphometry in young adults, age 18-25. Structural MRI data were collected from 3 distinct groups of participants (n = 78): daily, exclusive e-cigarette users; tobacco cigarette users; and non-using controls, to assess grey matter volume (GMV) differences. Voxel-based morphometry revealed significant GMV reductions in tobacco ci

The importance of harmful and potentially harmful constituents in the implementation of the 2009 US Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

Implementing the 2009 US Tobacco Control Act established a new infrastructure for tobacco and nicotine science. At its heart is the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP). A key challenge facing FDA CTP is determining whether nicotine products are "appropriate to the protection of the public health," and this is the central component of the Premarket Tobacco Application (PMTA) and Modified Risk Tobacco Application (MRTP) processes. CTP has granted such marketing orders for only a few products but has been consistent in its reasoning: the applicant demonstrated tha…

Evaluation of an intensive education program on the treatment of tobacco-use disorder for pharmacists: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is presently responsible for the death of over seven million people across the world. In Qatar, it is one of the main causes of premature deaths and preventable diseases. To reduce tobacco use, Qatar has ratified the World Health Organization (WHO)'s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and has implemented many tobacco-control initiatives. In spite of these measures, tobacco use is still considered a public health threat in Qatar. Pharmacists practicing in retail/community pharmacy settings are often the first port of call for individuals requiring general hea…

A randomized controlled trial of 24 weeks of varenicline for tobacco use among cancer patients: Efficacy, safety, and adherence.

OBJECTIVE: Continuing to smoke after a cancer diagnosis undermines prognosis. Yet few trials have tested Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved tobacco use medications in this population. Extended use varenicline may represent an effective treatment for cancer patients who smoke given barriers to cessation including a prolonged time line for relapse. METHODS: A placebo-controlled randomized trial tested 12 weeks of varenicline plus 12 weeks of placebo (standard [ST]) vs 24 weeks of varenicline (extended [ET]) with seven counseling sessions for treatment-seeking cancer patients who smoke

Divergent Long-Term Recovery After Long COVID in Tobacco Use Disorder and Healthy Controls: A Longitudinal Study.

INTRODUCTION: Although tobacco use disorder (TUD) and long COVID (LC) have been associated to neuropsychiatric disturbances, it remains unclear how tobacco dependence affects the recovery of clinical, cognitive, and biological processes over time. METHODS: This study compared individuals with tobacco use disorder and healthy controls using longitudinal assessments from pre-infection baseline through two post-COVID follow-ups over 12 months. Comprehensive assessments covered clinical, neuropsychiatric, and cognitive functioning, tobacco dependence and exposure, and peripheral biomarkers reflec

Digital-Assisted Community Pharmacy Cessation for Dual-Tobacco Users in Jordan: A Hybrid Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

Tobacco use remains a major public health challenge in Jordan, where cigarette smoking and waterpipe use are both common and dual use is increasingly prevalent. Community pharmacies are highly accessible healthcare settings, yet structured smoking-cessation services remain underutilized. This study evaluated the clinical effectiveness and implementation of Dual-Quit Digital, a pharmacist-delivered cessation counseling program tailored to the type of tobacco used, paired with a 6-month automated WhatsApp® (Menlo Park, CA, USA) follow-up system. We conducted a pragmatic, two-arm, parallel-group,

A randomized controlled trial of potential tobacco policies prohibiting menthol flavor in cigarettes and e-cigarettes: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Menthol cigarette use remains a large public health problem and disproportionately affects Black adults in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration has proposed prohibiting menthol flavor in cigarettes to protect public health. However, e-cigarettes are available in menthol flavor and are a popular alternative product adults might switch to if menthol is prohibited in cigarettes. Research is needed to understand how availability of menthol (vs. tobacco) flavored e-cigarettes could impact cigarette use among adults who smoke menthol cigarettes. METHODS: We will recruit 1

Isradipine augmentation of virtual reality cue exposure therapy for tobacco craving: a triple-blind randomized controlled trial.

Preclinical research with rodents suggests that the L-type calcium channel blocker isradipine can enhance long-term extinction of conditioned place preference for addictive substances when it is administered in conjunction with extinction training. Although isradipine alone, which is FDA-approved for hypertension, has not shown a direct effect on craving in human drug users, its potential to augment behavioral treatments designed to reduce craving remains unknown. We conducted a triple-blind, randomized placebo-controlled pilot clinical trial of isradipine combined with a novel virtual reality

N-acetylcysteine for smoking cessation among dual users of tobacco and cannabis: Protocol and rationale for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco and cannabis co-use is a growing public health problem. The synergistic effects of cannabis and nicotine on neurobiological systems that mediate reward and shared environmental cues reinforcing use may make tobacco smoking cessation more difficult. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an FDA-approved medication and over-the-counter supplement, has shown promise in animal studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in reducing tobacco and cannabis craving and use. NAC's potential efficacy in treating addiction may be attributable to its central nervous system effects in reducing exce

Successful Optimization of Tobacco Dependence Treatment in the Emergency Department: A Randomized Controlled Trial Using the Multiphase Optimization Strategy.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Tobacco dependence treatment initiated in the hospital emergency department (ED) is effective. However, trials typically use multicomponent interventions, making it difficult to distinguish specific components that are effective. In addition, interactions between components cannot be assessed. The Multiphase Optimization Strategy allows investigators to identify these effects. METHODS: We conducted a full-factorial, 24 or 16-condition optimization trial in a busy hospital ED to examine the performance of 4 tobacco dependence interventions: a brief negotiation interview; 6 wee

Tobacco smoking strongly modifies the association of prothrombin G20210A with undetermined stroke: consecutive survivors and population-based controls.

OBJECTIVE: Due to contradictory results of previous studies evaluating the association between ischemic stroke (IS) and thrombophilic polymorphisms, their routine screening in IS patients, particularly those older than 60 years, is not recommended. We evaluated the differences in the distribution of rs6025 and rs1799963 polymorphisms according to IS subtypes and their interaction with smoking. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study of 423 hospital-based consecutive survivors of their first-ever IS and 614 population-based controls. Survivors (18-81 years) with IS documented by brain imagi

Association of second-hand tobacco smoking with liver cancer, and interaction with HBV infection in a Chinese population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Although tobacco smoking is one of the established risk factors for liver cancer, results from epidemiological studies remain inconclusive on the relationship between second-hand smoke (SHS) and liver cancer, particularly among nonsmokers. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association between SHS and liver cancer, and to assess its potential interaction with major risk factors such as hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. METHODS: A population-based case-control study was conducted in Jiangsu, China, from 2003 to 2010, including 2011 newly diagnosed primary liver cancer ca
