The role of proteolytic enzymes in the root caries process remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate collagenase activity during tooth root demineralization and remineralization in an in vitro demineralization/remineralization pH-cycling model, Human tooth roots were subjected to pH cycling (alternating demineralization and remineralization) in one of two different time cycles for five days. Collagenase at 90, 180, or 360 micrograms per root was placed into either the demineralizing solution or the remineralizing solution in the pH-cycling system. The effects of additional expo

BACKGROUND: An oral condition that has largely been ignored in the Down syndrome population is pathological tooth wear. This study is aimed to create more awareness of the reasons underlying the tooth wear observed in patients with Down syndrome and to suggest different methods to prevent this condition. This research also potentially serves as a platform for future researchers to perform an in-depth analysis of the factors we identified. The aim of this study was to determine if children with Down syndrome are more prone to tooth wear than children who do not have Down syndrome.
METHODS: Our

Thirty-six patients aged 15-74 with palatal dental erosion where the aetiology was unclear were investigated for gastro-oesophageal reflux. Ten subjects without symptoms of reflux or palatal erosion acted as controls. Distal and proximal oesophageal reflux were measured over 24 hours by dual channel antimony electrodes. Oral pH was measured simultaneously over the same period by a radio-telemetry capsule held palatally in a vacuum formed splint. Data were logged onto two portable digitable recorders. Twenty-three patients (64%) with palatal erosion had pathological gastro-oesophageal reflux co

Scleroderma is an autoimmune, rheumatoid factor-positive disease that may be localized or systemic, affecting the skin, lungs, kidneys, and cardiovascular system. Dental effects include xerostomia, microstomia, idiopathic resorption of tooth and bone, oral effects of medications, erosion and decay caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and poor oral hygiene due to physical and emotional effects of the disease. All dentists have the knowledge and ability to treat those suffering with scleroderma.

Patients, healthcare professionals, and health product manufacturers focus on the benefits that the use of a medicine or health product will bring rather than the potential side effects. A case of erosive tooth surface loss caused by the repeated and prolonged use of an acidic mouthrinse is reported. The adverse effects of health care products on the dentition and methods to minimise potential damage are discussed.

The foods in the diet contain a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds. Considering these from an elemental perspective, 5 so-called macroelements, calcium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus and chlorine, are contained in comparatively large quantities in foods compared to all other elements. This chapter attempts to review the importance of these dietary macroelements on oral health, and in particular their role in tooth loss, dental caries, erosive tooth wear and periodontal disease. Calcium and phosphate make up the bulk of the mineralized human tissues. Adequate intake of both is theref

OBJECTIVES: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), i.e. child abuse or challenging circumstances in the family, are associated with various negative health outcomes in adulthood, such as cancer and heart disease, and there is some evidence for an association with oral health. We aimed to investigate whether there was an association between ACEs and adulthood caries experience, periodontal health, erosive tooth wear, and related behavior among the participants from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC1986).
METHODS: The study population consisted of 1690 cohort members who participated

Millions of individuals in Europe and the United States use cocaine regularly. Use of cocaine may have several orofacial effects such as perforation of nasal septum and palate, gingival lesions and erosion of tooth surfaces. Recent use of cocaine may also increase medical risks during dental treatment, especially when local anaesthetics with epinephrine or epinephrine-impregnated retraction cords are used. Therefore, it is recommended to postpone dental treatment at least 6 to 24 hours after the use of cocaine.

It is not very clear why oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is prone to develop squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Experimental studies on hamster have shown that wounding of oral mucosa promotes induction of epithelial dysplasia (ED) initiated with carcinogens. Hence, a study was undertaken to find the effect of intraoral traumatic factors (ITF) in OSF. Randomly selected 110 OSF patients were divided into 2 groups: Traumatic group (TG), having tooth/malposed impacted third molar/appliance/calculus; and Non-traumatic group (NTG). Clinico-pathological features of traumatic mucosa of TG were compared wit

PURPOSE: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) is characterized by subsurface demineralization and tooth substance loss with crater formation. Remineralization of subsurface demineralization has previously been demonstrated; however, repair of the eroded surface is still under investigation. This study investigated the effectiveness of mouthwashes containing hydrolyzed wheat protein (HWP) in repairing ETW through promotion of organized crystal growth.
METHODS: Enamel Erosion was created on 210 enamel blocks by 10-minute demineralization in 1% Citric Acid (pH 3.5). Then, blocks were randomly assigned to se

Purpose Dental hygienists are uniquely positioned to improve oral and overall health outcomes with evidence-based treatment plans. One recommendation that has yet to see its full potential is the use of stannous fluoride (SnF2) toothpaste. Stannous fluoride is more than just an anticaries agent. Its formulation within a toothpaste offers superior performance in reducing plaque, gingivitis, sensitivity, halitosis, and tooth erosion, while maintaining the sulcular barrier integrity. However, most patients are unaware of these easily available benefits for oral health. This short report highlight…
