AIM: To report two cases of palatal root fracture in maxillary molars that were successfully managed in the short term by root canal treatment and root amputation.
SUMMARY: In the first case, a 48-year-old woman with bony destruction and a deep periodontal pocket on the palatal root of tooth 26 (FDI) underwent root canal treatment. Bleeding into the palatal canal and radiolucent lines over the root suggested a fracture. Further evidence was provided by an electronic apex locator. Subsequent surgery confirmed the presence of a horizontal root fracture and the fractured root was removed. In the

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of wall thickness on the fracture load of hollow-structured zirconia teeth fabricated using 3D printing.
METHODS: The geometry of an artificial ceramic tooth (mandibular right first molar) was copied and modified. The final test group design yielded wall thicknesses of 0.30, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 mm. Twenty zirconia specimens from each group were fabricated using a 3D printer. Artificial teeth were divided into subgroups of teeth that remained hollow (hollow teeth) or were filled with resin (filled teeth). Fracture load tests were performed, and each artificial

PURPOSE: The influence of resilient support of abutment teeth on the fracture resistance of all-ceramic three-unit fixed partial dentures (FPDs) was tested in this study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups (n = 8) of glass-infiltrated, alumina-based, all-ceramic FPDs that were adhesively bonded to human molar teeth were investigated. In control group A, teeth that were rigidly inserted in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin were used for thermocycling and mechanical loading (TCML), as well as for fracture testing. In group B, TCML was conducted on teeth that had their roots covered with a p

The management of complex dental trauma can be modulated according to the emergencies that may arise over time. Clinical management of transverse root fractures may require different therapies based on situations, such as delay and error in the treatment of an avulsion trauma associated with apical third root fracture, patient's poor compliance, or external and internal root resorption. The primary aim of this article was to review studies regarding root fractures in the permanent dentition and root fracture management. The secondary aim was to present the inflammatory reaction and the complic

Intervertebral disc spacers using bioactive ceramics have been used to treat degenerative spinal disease. Tooth-shaped spacers are commonly used to prevent migration, but there is a possibility of fracture when inserted or after insertion. Intervertebral disc spacers with either an isosceles triangle-shaped tooth (T1) or a right triangle-shaped tooth (T2) were used as a control group. The design factors for the experimental group were modified to prevent fractures induced by stress concentration, and the surfaces of the spacers were designed as either an isosceles triangle-shaped valley (V1) o

BACKGROUND: Ceramic partial coverage restorations (PCRs) are minimally invasive treatment options for complex tooth damage. This study aimed to review the fracture resistance and fracture patterns of non-endodontically treated posterior teeth restored with PCRs using various restoration types (overlay, onlay, etc.), preparation designs, and two ceramic groups (lithium silicate-based and hybrid ceramic materials). METHODS: Three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect) were used to search for specific key terms according to the PRISMA diagram. Finally, 34 articles were included for

Following avulsion and replantation, teeth are at risk for infection and infection related resorption (IRR). Severe discolorations of tooth crowns and cervical root fractures are common. This study presents data on endodontic related complications of avulsed teeth replanted following an extraoral endodontic treatment. Periodontal aspects will be discussed in the second part of the present publication. Twenty-eight permanent teeth in 24 patients aged seven to 17 years were replanted after avulsion. All teeth could be evaluated. In all teeth extraoral endodontic treatment by retrograde insertion

This clinical report presents the use of a modified polyetheretherketone (PEEK) post and core in order to support a lithium disilicate ceramic crown for a maxillary lateral incisor. When considering post-and-core restorations, material flexibility is essential to prevent root fractures. The low elastic modulus of PEEK (4 GPa) could result in lower root fracture rates, preserving tooth structure and favoring tooth re-restoration if the post fractures. PEEK is biocompatible, presents adequate bond strength with dentin when bonded with a resin cement, and can be used under ceramic restorations be

This study reports a case of complicated crown-root fractures of the maxillary central incisors (teeth 8 and 9) in a 10-year-old boy. Vital pulpotomy and iRoot BP Plus capping were performed to protect the pulp. The fractured crown fragments were used to restore the tooth morphology, and the esthetics and function of both central incisors were restored. The roots of the affected teeth continued to develop normally. Twenty-five months after the initial treatment, the patient suffered another trauma, resulting in a second dislodgement of the fractured crown of the left maxillary central incisor.

AIM: This case describes the successful transplantation of a mature mesiodens tooth to replace a traumatized maxillary central incisor.
SUMMARY: A 17-year-old male attended 1 week after a traumatic injury to his left maxillary central incisor (tooth 21). Radiographs revealed a horizontal root fracture and a poor prognosis. The tooth was atraumatically removed and replaced with a mesiodens lying in the same region. After stabilization, root canal treatment was performed and aesthetics were restored with a tooth coloured restoration. A 2-year follow-up revealed the tooth had good aesthetics and

Complicated crown-root fractures (CRFs) in the anterior region demonstrate significant restorative and esthetic challenges, particularly when the fracture extends subgingivally. Surgical extrusion is a conservative treatment option that repositions the tooth coronally, facilitating restoration while preserving periodontal health. This case report describes the management of a complicated CRF using a minimally traumatic surgical extrusion technique followed by endodontic and restorative rehabilitation. The two-year follow-up demonstrates favorable periodontal healing, tooth stability, and succe

The treatment of esthetic areas with single-tooth implants represents a new challenge for the clinician. Placement of a single-unit implant is indicated for fractured or periodontally compromised teeth. In 1993, a modification of the forced eruption technique, called "orthodontic extrusive remodelling," was proposed as a way to augment both soft- and hard-tissue profiles at potential implant sites. This case report describes augmentation of the coronal soft and hard tissues around a fractured tooth, which was achieved by forced orthodontic extrusion before implant placement. This technique may

Endodontically treated teeth may undergo crown, crown-root, or root fractures. The treatment of fractured teeth can be complicated, sometimes because of difficulties with the final restoration. This case report describes a case of crown-root fracture of a left lower first molar in which endodontic treatment and rapid orthodontic eruption of the tooth made a good prosthetic restoration possible.

OBJECTIVES: Many treatment options accepted for unsalvageable traumatized teeth in adults would seem contraindicated in children and adolescents. Instead, growing patients need interim restorative measures, thus extensively preserving their local bone and soft tissue structures and, ideally, preparing the involved site for later definitive restoration while they transform to skeletal maturity. This narrative topic review addresses the interim management in case of very deep intra-extra-alveolar fractures, extensive infection-related root resorption, tooth ankylosis, and anterior tooth loss in
