Oral impact of dental prosthesis use in different patterns of tooth loss.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Tooth loss is a critical indicator of oral health and negatively impacts oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) depending on the number and location of the missing teeth. Reports of oral rehabilitation have been conflicting depending on the tooth loss pattern and prostheses provided. PURPOSE: The purpose of this population-based study was to evaluate the association between the use of different dental prostheses according to different tooth loss patterns and OHRQoL. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A representative sample of 22 843 individuals aged between 15 and 75 years wa

Initial observations of cheek tooth abnormalities in sheep in Slovenia.

Observations were made on a small flock of 50 sheep of the native Slovenian Jezersko-Solcava breed by investigators with dental training. The aim was to determine the range of naturally occurring dental diseases, so postmortem examinations were performed on animals slaughtered for meat or culled due to disease. Additional data were obtained by examination of 25 specimens submitted for investigation of unexplained death at a pathology centre. Seventeen (34 per cent) of the flock had incisor disease but only five became clinically ill; all these five had advanced cheek tooth disease (gingival re

Three-Dimensional Assessment of Composite Attachment Wear in Clear Aligner Therapy: A Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Clear aligner therapy relies on composite attachments for precise tooth movement; however, wear may compromise force delivery and treatment efficacy. This study quantitatively assessed morphometric changes in the attachment dimensions and volume over six months and explored patterns according to sex, jaw, and tooth position. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 12 adults (aged >18 years) with mild-to-moderate malocclusion, contributing 50 attachments bonded with G-ænial Universal Flo (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) composite material. Intraoral scans were

In-vitro study of the wear behavior of telescopic crowns made of CoCr, zirconia or PEEK.

PURPOSE: Double-crown-retained dentures (DCRD) are an established treatment in dentistry. In some cases, the retention between primary crown (PC) and secondary crown (SC) loosens due to wear during daily handling of the denture. The aim of the present study was to examine modern materials for PCs and SCs with regard to their wear behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cyclic pull-off tests were conducted on each 40 specimens in five test groups. PCs made of CoCr, PEEK and ZrO2 were cemented onto a prepared resin tooth. SCs were made of the same materials and combined to the following PC-SC combinat

Sleep-related faciomandibular myoclonus: A sleep-related movement disorder different from bruxism.

We describe a 33-year-old man who presented with lip and tongue nibbling and bleeding during sleep. Videopolysomnography revealed myoclonic … occurring only during sleep. Tooth grinding, temporomandibular joint pain, abnormal tooth mobility, tooth wear, and other dental problems were clinically absent. We propose that, on the basis of the clinical and EMG features, SFMM may be considered a distinct disorder and different from sleep bruxism.

Gingival health, plaque accumulation, and restoration outcomes in deciduous anterior teeth: evaluating zirconia crowns versus composite resin strip crowns.

BACKGROUND: Zirconia crowns, resembling crystals and with enamel-like aesthetics, are recent entrants in pediatric restorative dentistry. Despite growing use, their empirical efficacy remains under-explored. The aim of this study is to compare resin composite strip crowns and premanufactured zirconia crowns on primary maxillary incisors. METHODS: In the Pediatric Dental Clinics, 240 primary maxillary incisors (69 patients) were treated with either zirconia (120 teeth) or composite strip crowns (120 teeth). Evaluations of gingival health, plaque, secondary caries, restoration failure, and oppo

Conservative Restoration of Worn Mandibular Anterior Teeth Combining Gingival Repositioning and a Template Matricing Technique.

Conservative resin composite restoration of worn mandibular anterior teeth may offer an alternative option to full-coverage restorations for the patient. Assessment of the occlusal condition is critical because alterations in occlusal vertical dimension may not always be possible. By exposing additional coronal tooth structure, periodontal crown-lengthening procedures can serve to increase clinical crown height when adequate attached gingival tissue is present and supra-eruption has likely occurred. Fabrication of a custom template made from a diagnostic mock-up with proximal stainless steel m

Mandible microwear texture analysis of crickets raised on diets of different abrasiveness reveals universality of diet-induced wear.

Animals have evolved diverse comminuting tools. While vertebrates possess mineralized teeth, insect mandibles often bear metal-inclusion-hardened serrated cusps. Microscopic dental enamel wear (microwear) is known to be caused by contact with ingesta. To test if insect mandible microwear is also diet-dependent, we kept newly moulted adult two-spotted crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) for four weeks on alfalfa-based rodent pellets with and without added mineral abrasives (loess, quartz, volcanic ash). Six crickets per diet were examined after 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. All diets induced progress

Using artificial intelligence to determine the influence of dental aesthetics on facial attractiveness in comparison to other facial modifications.

BACKGROUND: Facial aesthetics is a major motivating factor for undergoing orthodontic treatment. OBJECTIVES: To ascertain-by means of artificial intelligence (AI)-the influence of dental alignment on facial attractiveness and perceived age, compared to other modifications such as wearing glasses, earrings, or lipstick. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty volunteering females (mean age: 24.5) with near perfectly aligned upper front teeth [Aesthetic Component scale of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (AC-IOTN) = 1 and Peer Assessment Rating Index (PAR Index) = 0 or 1] were photographed with a s

Dental Wear and Molar Pulp Volume Reduction in Macaca fascicularis.

OBJECTIVES: Odontoblasts lining the pulp cavity deposit dentine throughout life, meaning the volume of the pulp cavity decreases with age. Primates with more abrasive diets have relatively higher molar pulp volume in their unworn molars than those with less abrasive diets. We propose that species with more abrasive diets deposit additional dentine across their lifespans to help resist wear and extend the effective lifespan of their molars. Whereas both age and wear affect dentine deposition, it is unknown which of these two variables has the greater impact. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We measured

Malocclusions in the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus).

Malocclusions are a misalignment or incorrect positioning of the teeth when the upper and lower jaws close. These are poorly described in the koala and can result in irregular mastication which can have lifelong effects on body condition and oral health. A total of 370 koalas from two populations in Queensland (295) and one in South Australia (75) were examined for malocclusions. The prevalence of malocclusions in South Australian free-ranging koalas, captive Queensland koalas and Queensland free-ranging koalas was 39% (44), 30% (29) and 22% (29) respectively. Four types of malocclusion were i

Unintended changes to the occlusion following the provision of night guards.

A review of the literature on night guards left questions unanswered about the risk and possible causes of occlusal derangement linked to night guard design and use. Cases are presented where night guard use resulted in anterior open bite and associated occlusal derangement. The aetiology of the occlusal changes observed is discussed. It is concluded that adverse occlusal effects linked to the use of night guards may be found to be more common than anticipated from existing literature. Patient follow-up is essential to monitor the use and effects of night guards, and regardless of appliance ty

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Oral Health in Adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), i.e. child abuse or challenging circumstances in the family, are associated with various negative health outcomes in adulthood, such as cancer and heart disease, and there is some evidence for an association with oral health. We aimed to investigate whether there was an association between ACEs and adulthood caries experience, periodontal health, erosive tooth wear, and related behavior among the participants from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC1986). METHODS: The study population consisted of 1690 cohort members who participated …

A diagnostic and treatment planning checklist for vertical problems in orthodontic patients.

Vertical discrepancies in orthodontics represent a complex and multifactorial diagnostic challenge. Traditional approaches often lack a consistent correlation between facial patterns, overbite, and occlusal vertical dimension, limiting a comprehensive treatment planning. This article proposes a diagnostic checklist structured around five key factors-lower anterior facial height, incisor display at rest, posterior dental height, overbite, and occlusal wear-to assess vertical problems across macro-, mini-, and microesthetic levels. The amount of incisor display at rest serves as the guiding para
