Source-Specific Air Pollution and Loss of Independence in Older Adults Across the US.

IMPORTANCE: Air pollution is a recognized risk factor associated with chronic diseases, including respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, which can lead to physical and cognitive impairments in later life. Although these losses of function, individually or in combination, reduce individuals' likelihood of living independently, little is known about the association of air pollution with this critical outcome. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between air pollution and loss of independence in later life. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted as part of the

Lifetime Exposure to Ambient Pollution and Lung Function in Children.

RATIONALE: Few studies have examined associations between exposure to air pollution and childhood lung function after implementation of strict air quality regulations in the 1990s. OBJECTIVES: To assess traffic-related pollution exposure and childhood lung function. METHODS: We geocoded addresses for 614 mother-child pairs enrolled during pregnancy in the Boston area 1999-2002 and followed them until a mid-childhood visit (median age, 7.7). We calculated the proximity of the home to the nearest major roadway. We estimated first year of life, lifetime, and prior-year exposure to particulate m…

Air pollution and cytokine responsiveness in asthmatic and non-asthmatic children.

Epidemiological studies indicate that asthmatic children are more susceptible to traffic-related air pollution exposure than non-asthmatic children. Local and systemic inflammation in combination with oxidative stress have been suggested as a possible susceptibility factor. We investigated effect modification by asthma status for the association between air pollution exposure and systemic effects using whole blood cytokine responsiveness as an inflammatory marker. The study was nested within the two German birth cohort studies GINIplus and LISAplus and initially designed as a random sub-sample

Short-Term Trend Forecast of Different Traffic Pollutants in Minnesota Based on Spot Velocity Conversion.

Because traffic pollution is a global problem, the prediction of traffic emissions and the analysis of their influencing factors is the key to adopting management and control measures to reduce traffic emissions. Hence, the evaluation of the actual level of traffic emissions has gained more interest. The Computer Program to calculate Emissions from Road Transport model (COPERT) is being downloaded by 100 users per month and is being used in a large number of applications. This paper uses this model to calculate short-term vehicle emissions. The difference from the traditional research was that

Nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) pollution in the Accra metropolis: Spatiotemporal patterns and the role of meteorology.

Economic and urban development in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) may be shifting the dominant air pollution sources in cities from biomass to road traffic. Considered as a marker for traffic-related air pollution in cities, we conducted a city-wide measurement of NOx levels in the Accra Metropolis and examined their spatiotemporal patterns in relation to land use and meteorological factors. Between April 2019 to June 2020, we collected weekly integrated NOx (n = 428) and NO2 (n = 472) samples at 10 fixed (year-long) and 124 rotating (week-long) sites. Data from the same time of year were compared to

Childhood respiratory allergies and symptoms in highly polluted area of Central Europe.

The study investigated the associations between the prevalence of the childhood respiratory diseases and the long-term exposure to air pollution in the burdened area of Moravian-Silesian Region in the Czech Republic. The health data were collected during 2014 in 7,239 children 5, 9, 13 and 17 years of age. Exposure to PM10 and NO2 in the residence addresses was based on dispersion models and GIS based traffic-related indicators. PM10 levels were positively associated with both lifetime (OR 1.35; 95%CI 1.09-1.67) and current (OR 1.32; 95%CI 1.05-1.67) allergic rhinitis; current asthma was assoc

Gestational diabetes and preeclampsia in association with air pollution at levels below current air quality guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have estimated associations between air pollution and birth outcomes, but few have evaluated potential effects on pregnancy complications. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether low-level exposure to air pollution is associated with gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. METHODS: High-quality registry information on 81,110 singleton pregnancy outcomes in southern Sweden during 1999-2005 was linked to individual-level exposure estimates with high spatial resolution. Modeled exposure to nitrogen oxides (NOx), expressed as mean concentrations per trimester, and proximity

Implications of electric mobility on health and environmental justice.

Traffic-related air and noise pollution continues to pose significant health threats to the urban population. This study develops a transferable methodology to estimate key health co-benefits of electric mobility at a city scale. It is the first study to consider electrifying both passenger and goods vehicles. Using city-wide data, we adopt a bottom-up approach based on empirical traffic volume, vehicle mix and speed on the road network. Under four scenarios of different vehicle types, noise propagation and air dispersion models are used to estimate reductions of noise level and five roadside

Air pollution forecasting in Ankara, Turkey using air pollution index and its relation to assimilative capacity of the atmosphere.

Spatial and temporal variations in concentrations of CO, NO, NO(2), SO(2), and PM(10), measured between 1999 and 2000, at traffic-impacted and residential stations in Ankara were investigated. Air quality in residential areas was found to be influenced by traffic activities in the city. Pollutant ratios were proven to be reliable tracers to differentiate between different sources. Air pollution index (API) of the whole city was calculated to evaluate the level of air quality in Ankara. Multiple linear regression model was developed for forecasting API in Ankara. The correlation coefficients we

Children's Environmental Health in Thailand: Past, Present, and Future.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence of a link between environmental pollution and preventable diseases in developing countries, including Thailand. Economic development has generated several types of pollution that can affect population health. While these environmental health effects can be observed throughout life, pregnant women and children represent particularly vulnerable and sensitive groups. METHODS: The published epidemiological literature investigating environmental chemical exposure in Thai children was reviewed, highlighting those that investigated associations between exposu

[Health Effects of Air Pollution: A Historical Review and Present Status].

During the 1960s, the concentrations of air pollutants, particularly that of sulfur dioxide (SO2), were extremely high in many industrial cities in Japan, and the prevalence of bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis increased among residents living in the cities. To evaluate the effects of air pollution on respiratory diseases, many epidemiological studies were conducted, and the findings played an important role in the regulatory control of air pollution. After 1970, the concentration of SO2 has decreased markedly, and its adverse health effects have been minimized. On the other hand, the in

Untargeted serum metabolomics and air pollution in Parkinson's disease.

Mechanisms linking air pollution to Parkinson's disease (PD) remain unclear despite consistent toxicological and epidemiological evidence. In this exploratory study, we investigated metabolic disturbances associated with air pollution in PD using untargeted metabolomics. Serum samples were collected from 616 PD patients and 271 controls in central California, a region with high air pollution. Exposures to particulate matter (PM2.5), carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide were estimated for the 1-, 3-, and 5-year periods prior to serum collection using three modeling approaches: chemical transpo

Reported Neighborhood Traffic and the Odds of Asthma/Asthma-Like Symptoms: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of a Multi-Racial Cohort of Children.

Asthma in children poses a significant clinical and public health burden. We examined the association between reported neighborhood traffic (a proxy for traffic-related air pollution) and asthma among 855 multi-racial children aged 4-8 years old who participated in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) cohort. We hypothesized that high neighborhood traffic density would be associated with the prevalence of asthma. Asthma/asthma-like symptoms (defined as current and/or past physician diagnosed asthma, past wheezing, or nighttime cough or wheezing in the past 12 months) wa

Metagenomic surveys show a widespread diffusion of antibiotic resistance genes in a transect from urbanized to marine protected area.

Ports are hot spots of pollution; they receive pollution from land-based sources, marine traffic and port infrastructures. Marine ecosystems of nearby areas can be strongly affected by pollution from port-related activities. Here, we investigated the microbiomes present in sea floor sediments along a transect from the harbour of Livorno (Central Italy) to a nearby marine protected area. Results of 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) analyses indicated the presence of different trends of specific bacterial groups (e.g. phyla NB1-j, Acidobacteriota and Desulfobul

The influence of air pollution exposure on the short- and long-term health benefits associated with active mobility: A systematic review.

Active mobility (AM), defined as walking and cycling for transportation, can improve health through increasing regular physical activity. However, these health improvements could be outweighed by harm from inhaling traffic-related air pollutants during AM participation. The interaction of AM and air pollutants on health is complex physiologically, manifesting as acute changes in health indicators that may lead to poor long-term health consequences. The aim of this study was to systematically review the current evidence of effect modification by air pollution (AP) on associations between AM and

Road traffic noise, blood pressure and heart rate: Pooled analyses of harmonized data from 88,336 participants.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to road traffic noise may increase blood pressure and heart rate. It is unclear to what extent exposure to air pollution may influence this relationship. We investigated associations between noise, blood pressure and heart rate, with harmonized data from three European cohorts, while taking into account exposure to air pollution. METHODS: Road traffic noise exposure was assessed using a European noise model based on the Common Noise Assessment Methods in Europe framework (CNOSSOS-EU). Exposure to air pollution was estimated using a European-wide land use regression mode

Long-term air pollution and traffic noise exposures and cognitive function:A cross-sectional analysis of the Heinz Nixdorf Recall study.

Investigations of adverse effects of air pollution (AP) and ambient noise on cognitive functions are apparently scarce, and findings seem to be inconsistent. The aim of this study was to examine the associations of long-term exposure to AP and traffic noise with cognitive performance. At the second examination of the population-based Heinz Nixdorf Recall study (2006-2008), cognitive performance was evaluated in 4086 participants. Long-term residential exposure to size-specific particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) with land use regression, to and traffic noise (weighted 24-h (LDEN)
