Effects of thiopentone, propofol, alphaxalone-alphadolone, ketamine and xylazine-ketamine on lower oesophageal sphincter pressure and barrier pressure in cats.

The anaesthetic induction agents thiopentone, propofol and alphaxalone-alphadolone were administered to cats intravenously and ketamine and xylazine-ketamine-atropine were administered intramuscularly in order to determine their effects on gastric pressure, lower oesophageal sphincter pressure, and barrier pressure. Manometric measurements were made with a non-perfused catheter tip pressure transducer. All the anaesthetic induction agents decreased the tone of the lower oesophageal sphincter but the reduction was least with ketamine. Lower oesophageal sphincter tone was significantly higher in

Novel rat model of stress urinary incontinence with a retroflexed bladder.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: We created a rat model with a retroflexed bladder that mimicked the loss of the posterior urethrovesical angle and compared the results with sham-surgery rats for the establishment of rat models of stress urinary incontinence. METHODS: The retroflexed bladder was created by stitching the bladder posteriorly to the psoas muscle. Sneeze-induced urethral pressure response and urethral baseline pressure were measured using a microtip-transducer catheter and leak point pressures induced by sneezing, the Crede maneuver, and the vertical tilt table method were measured v

An automatized system for the assessment of nutritive sucking behavior in infants: a preliminary analysis on term neonates.

Nutritive Sucking (NS) is a highly organized process that can reflect infants' maturation during the early post-natal period. The assessment of NS may provide a sensitive means of evaluating early motor skills and their development. Thus, a reliable tool for assessing sucking behavior may benefit diagnostics and treatment of newborns since the first days of life. The aim of this work is to propose an automatized system to measure sucking ability and calculate a set of objective and quantitative indices for its assessment. We focused on the analysis of the Intraoral Pressure (IP) generated by i

Perineural pressures under the pneumatic tourniquet in the upper extremity.

The literature indicates that tourniquet-induced neurological injuries are relatively common and frequently occur at a subclinical level. In order to evaluate the pressure transmitted to the major peripheral nerves of the arm by an externally applied pneumatic tourniquet, a fully implantable biomedical pressure transducer was placed adjacent the radial, median and ulnar nerves in six cadaver upper extremities of average dimensions. This sensor allowed accurate, reproducible measurements of perineural pressures without requiring significant disruption of the normal anatomical structures of the

Light-based 3D printing of mechanoluminescent living gels loaded with dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates, a group of marine unicellular algae, are known for the fascinating glowing effects in coastal waters. While this natural mechanoluminescent phenomenon has been explored in pressure sensors and optical transducers, technologies to shape dinoflagellate-containing materials into more complex, engineering-relevant geometries remain limited. Here, we report a three-dimensional printing strategy to manufacture complex-shaped mechanoluminescent objects using dinoflagellates embedded in biocompatible hydrogels. The growth and mechanoluminescence of the entrapped dinoflagellates were i

[Surgical Site Infections in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury].

Patients with traumatic brain injury(TBI)have various pathological conditions, such as direct cell destruction by external force, compression by hematoma, vascular injury, ischemia, complicated hypoxia, and hypotension. These pathological conditions occur simultaneously at the time of injury. In some cases, contaminated wounds may be treated, and infection patterns different from the scheduled neurosurgical cases should be managed. In cases of severe TBI, immunocompromised patients are considered to be at high risk of infection. Infection control during the initial stage of treatment affects p

Short- and long-term effects on the ciliary body and the aqueous outflow pathways of high-intensity focused ultrasound cyclocoagulation.

Several physical methods can be used to coagulate the ciliary body and decrease intra-ocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. The study described here investigated the short- and long-term effects of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) cyclocoagulation on the aqueous humor production structures and outflow pathways. Thirty-four rabbit eyes were sonicated with a ring-shaped probe containing six miniaturized HIFU transducers. Light, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy and corrosion casts were performed. In the affected regions, the epithelium of the ciliary processes w

Acoustic accessibility investigation for ultrasound mediated treatment of glycogen storage disease type Ia patients.

Glycogen storage disease type Ia (GSDIa) is caused by an inherited defect in the glucose-6-phosphatase gene. The recent advent of targeted ultrasound-mediated delivery (USMD) of plasmid DNA (pDNA) to the liver in conjunction with microbubbles may provide an alternative treatment option. This study focuses on determining the acoustically accessible liver volume in GSDIa patients using transducer models of various geometries with an image-based geometry-driven approach. Results show that transducers with longer focal lengths and smaller apertures (up to an f/number of 2) are able to access large

Influence of catheterisation on the results of sonographic urethrocystography in patients with genuine stress incontinence.

Using introital sonography as an alternative to lateral chain urethrocystography during urodynamic studies, a prospective investigation was carried out in 47 patients with lower urinary tract complaints, to determine the correlation of sonographic assessment with and without bladder catheterisation. The apparent location of the bladder neck in relation to the pubic symphysis and measurements of the posterior urethrovesical angle at rest and during straining during cystometry with and without intravesical urodynamic pressure transducers were determined. In 22 (46.8%) patients the bladder neck a

The effect of ranitidine on the gastroduodenal motility as determined by the maximal pressure periods.

Twenty healthy subjects with a mean age of 23.5 years were studied. Identically appearing tablets of 150 mg ranitidine or placebo were given to each subject twice daily for 2 days. After an overnight fast the same dosage of tablets was given 2 h before introduction of two fiberoptic transducers, the tips of which were localized to the mid-portion of the gastric antrum and the upper third of the duodenum. The double-blind crossover study showed in the placebo period a mean duration of the maximal pressure periods (MPP) of 5.5 min in the duodenum and 3.5 min in the antrum of the stomach. The cyc

Ultrasound in the study of atherosclerosis.

Ultrasound has come to play an increasingly important role in investigating atherosclerosis. The simple, continuous wave directional devices may be used to measure limb blood pressure and assess velocity patterns from accessible arteries. The recent combined B-mode and pulsed Doppler systems are being used regularly to study the carotid bifurcation in the neck. With improvements in image resolution, Doppler technology and signal processing methods, it is now feasible to evaluate the morphology of the plaque and accurately predict the degree of stenosis by the recorded velocity changes in the r

Doppler blood pressure measurement in pigs during anaesthesia.

To determine the accuracy of Doppler blood pressure measurement in anaesthetised pigs eight large white pigs (Sus scrofa) were anaesthetised with zolazepam and tiletamine as Zoletil 100 (4 mg/kg) and xylazine (2 mg/kg) by intramuscular injection followed by isoflurane in 100% oxygen. Blood pressure measurements were recorded using a Doppler probe on the radial artery and a catheter in the femoral artery connected to a transducer. The sample mean of the Doppler measurements were compared with the sample mean of the invasive systolic arterial blood pressure while accounting for the heart rate, e

Clinical monitoring of intracranial pressure in fulminant hepatic failure.

Cerebral oedema is the commonest immediate cause of death in fulminant hepatic failure and an investigation was carried out to determine the value of monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP) and to examine the effects of ICP of dexamethasone therapy and mannitol administration. ICP values in 10 patients at the time of insertion of a subdural pressure transducer (grade IV encephalopathy) averaged 15.5 +/- SD 14.8 mmHg. Despite dexamethansone therapy, which had been started on admission, rises in ICP were subsequently observed in seven of the eight patients who died. In the two patients who surviv

A fibre optics system for the evaluation of airway pressure in mechanically ventilated patients.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was intended to evaluate the "in vivo" endotracheal (ET) tube resistance and respiratory mechanics in mechanically ventilated patients with respiratory failure by using fiber optic catheters. DESIGN: Two fiber optic catheters, consisting of a thin probe with a pressure transducer on the tip, were used. The first was placed at the proximal side of the ET tube and the second was positioned distally beyond the end. A low compliant air-filled catheter connected to a traditional pressure transducer was placed close to the proximal fiber optic device to compare the pres

A study of intragastric and intravesicular pressure changes during rest, coughing, weight lifting, retching, and vomiting.

BACKGROUND: In patients undergoing a variety of procedures, surgical success is in part dependent on maintaining normal intra-abdominal pressure in the immediate postoperative period. Our objective was to quantify intragastric and intravesicular pressures during activities, through the use of manometry catheters. METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers had a manometry catheter placed transnasally, and a urinary Foley catheter placed. Baseline intragastric and intravesicular pressures were recorded and the catheters were then transduced continuously. Pressures were recorded with activity: coughing, li

Endotracheal tube cuff pressure increases significantly during anterior cervical fusion with the Caspar instrumentation system.

To determine whether endotracheal tube cuff pressure increases significantly with surgical retraction and cervical spine distraction during anterior cervical spine surgery with Caspar instrumentation, we prospectively studied 10 patients undergoing this procedure. The tracheas of all patients were intubated with a Mallinckrodt Hi-Lo endotracheal tube. Tracheal tube cuff pressures measured with a transducer system were 42.4 mm Hg +/- 7.0 mm Hg (SEM) after intubation and cuff inflation. Air was removed from the endotracheal tube cuff until the trachea was just barely sealed at a cuff pressure of

Sensing pressure in the cardiovascular system: Gq-coupled mechanoreceptors and TRP channels.

Despite the central physiological importance of cardiovascular mechanotransduction, the molecular identities of the sensors and the signaling pathways have long remained elusive. Indeed, how pressure is transduced into cellular excitation has only recently started to emerge. In both arterial and cardiac myocytes, the diacylglycerol-sensitive canonical transient receptor potential (TRPC) subunits are proposed to underlie the stretch-activated depolarizing cation channels. An indirect mechanism of activation through a ligand-independent conformational switch of Gq-coupled receptors by mechanical
