Accurate patient history contributes to differentiating diabetes insipidus: a case study.

This case study highlights the important contribution of nursing in obtaining an accurate health history. The case discussed herein initially appeared to be neurogenic diabetes insipidus (DI) secondary to a traumatic brain injury. The nursing staff, by reviewing the patient's health history with his family, discovered a history of polydipsia and long-standing lithium use. Lithium is implicated in drug-induced nephrogenic DI, and because the patient had not received lithium since being admitted to the hospital, his treatment changed to focus on nephrogenic DI. By combining information from the

Bridging the Phenomenological Gap: Body Mapping as an Art-Based Reflection on Nursing Students' Moral Distress and Embodied Empathy During Simulation.

The primary objective of this qualitative study was to explore the phenomenological experiences of nursing students following a high-fidelity labor and delivery simulation, utilizing body mapping as an art-based reflective intervention. While simulation education bridges theoretical knowledge and clinical practice, it exposes students to psychological stressors, vicarious trauma, and moral distress that traditional cognitive debriefing cannot adequately resolve. Thirty-four nursing students participated in the study, creating visual artifacts and completing in-depth interviews. Data were analy

Nursing support for testicular sperm aspiration and intracytoplasmic sperm injection in patients with high paraplegia: a retrospective case series.

BACKGROUND: High paraplegia, primarily affecting young men during their reproductive years, often results in ejaculatory dysfunction and infertility. Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) offers a viable path to biological parenthood for this population. However, evidence on nursing strategies supporting such procedures is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and psychosocial outcomes of patients with high paraplegia due to spinal cord injury who underwent TESA-ICSI and explore the effectiveness of specialized nursing interventio

What Was the Change in Telehealth Usage and Proportion of No-show Visits for an Orthopaedic Trauma Clinic During the COVID-19 Pandemic?

BACKGROUND: In response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services pledged payment for telehealth visits for the duration of this public health emergency in an effort to decrease COVID-19 transmission and allow for deployment of residents and attending physicians to support critical-care services. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has vastly expanded telehealth use, no studies to our knowledge have analyzed the implementation and success of telehealth for orthopaedic trauma. This population is unique in that patients who have experienced or

The Inner Working of Trauma: A Qualitative Assessment of Experiences of Trauma, Intergenerational Family Dynamics, and Psychological Well-Being in Women With HIV in South Carolina.

Women with HIV are more likely to have a history of traumatic and stressful life experiences. The current study examines experiences of traumatic and stressful life events, issues co-occurring with experiences of trauma, and intergenerational family dynamics regarding trauma and psychological well-being in women with HIV. The study was guided by the theoretical approach of an integrative translational model that incorporates trauma-related factors into a psychosocial framework. Data were collected from interviews with 20 women with HIV and analyzed for thematic categories. Thematic analysis in

Digital Media to Support Healing from Trauma: A Conceptual Framework Based on Mindfulness.

Digital media which involve narrative storytelling are increasingly used in nursing and health research, including clinical applications such as cinematherapy. A pilot study was conducted on how digital media self-accessed by marginalized individuals may be beneficial toward mindfulness and healing from trauma. Qualitative interviews were conducted with individuals (n = 8) who self-reported marginalizations via: race; gender; rural geography; socioeconomic status; indigenous or colonial experience; survivor of abuse; experiences of homelessness; or disability. Results indicated that trauma-nar

Thoracic trauma in children.

Thoracic trauma is usually accompanied by other body system injury, most frequently head and skeletal injury. Developmental changes throughout childhood make the consequences of such injuries more severe, as children develop respiratory and circulatory compromise quickly. Blunt trauma predominates in pediatric thoracic trauma. Trauma to the thoracic cavity may involve fractures of the ribs or injuries where the ribs remain intact. Trauma involving the pleural space affects ventilation that may evolve into circulatory failure if not addressed promptly. Pulmonary contusion is among the most freq

Medical evaluation for child physical abuse: what the PNP needs to know.

Physical abuse is a problem of epidemic proportions. Pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) will most likely encounter physically abused children in their practice. This continuing education offering will help PNPs develop the skills necessary to recognize an injury that raises the concern for abuse based on characteristics of the injury such as appearance, location, or severity and characteristics of the history given for the injury. The link between corporal punishment and physical abuse will be discussed. Cutaneous findings of abuse, oral injuries, skeletal injuries, abdominal trauma, and abu

Nurse advocacy for selective versus routine episiotomy.

Although episiotomy is one of the most commonly performed surgeries, little scientific support exists for this procedure. Furthermore, the suggested advantages of routine episiotomy are challenged easily and the surgery is not without risks. Adverse effects arising from episiotomy include an increased incidence of severe lacerations, blood loss, pain, delayed healing, dyspareunia, psychologic trauma, and medical cost. Nurses can assist women in avoiding perineal trauma resulting from unnecessary episiotomy through patient education, patient advocacy, and direct care.

Orthopaedic trauma in the pregnant patient.

Trauma affects up to 8% of pregnancies and is the leading cause of death among pregnant women in the United States. A pregnancy test is mandated for all females of childbearing age who are involved in trauma. Orthopaedic trauma in the pregnant patient is managed similarly to that for all trauma patients. Initial resuscitation efforts should focus on the pregnant patient because stable patient vital signs provide the best chance for fetal survival. In the stable patient, fetal assessment and a pelvic examination are mandatory. Radiographs as well as abdominal ultrasound of the patient and fetal
