Segmentation plays an important role in neuronal diversification and organisation in the developing hindbrain. For instance, cranial nerve branchiomotor nuclei are organised segmentally within the basal plates of successive pairs of rhombomeres. To reach their targets, motor axons follow highly stereotyped pathways exiting the hindbrain only via specific exit points in the even-numbered rhombomeres. Hox genes are good candidates for controlling this pathfinding, since they are segmentally expressed and involved in rhombomeric patterning. Here we report that in Hoxa-2(-/-) embryos, the segmenta

Data characterizing visual evoked potentials in neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve are presented. In contrast to healthy individuals, patients with this kind of neuralgia displayed a well pronounced character of early and late components of evoked potentials not only in the occipital but also in the central regions. Other features characteristic of their potentials were a hypersynchronous post-discharge and the presence of peaks. All these findings suggest the resemblance between the central mechanisms of neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve and those of epilepsy.

The following points emerge from a systematic investigation of the 4 divisions of the cat trigeminal sensory complex. (1) The subnucleus oralis receives a large representation from the oral cavity, a region also represented in the 3 other divisions of the trigeminal sensory complex. (2) Nucleus principalis cells project heavily to the contralateral and to the ipsilateral ventroposterior thalamus. Ipsilateral projections are only from the oral cavity representation. (3) Units responding to noxious mechanical stimulation have been found at two different loci: the subnucleus caudalis for the enti

A 12-year old Simmental x Red Holstein cow was admitted to the clinic eight months after an eye laceration followed by eye extirpation. The region of the excised eye had healed, however, the cow had additional trigeminal and facial nerve palsy. Nevertheless, the cow was in good general condition, and therefore, was sent home without therapy. After delivering a sound calf, her physical condition deteriorated and she was slaughtered. Histologic examination of the brain revealed degeneration of the right optic nerve and right half of the chiasma opticum as well as left tractus opticus (opposite s

The distribution of cells that express mRNA encoding the androgen (AR) and estrogen (ER) receptors was examined in adult male and female rats by using in situ hybridization. Specific labeling appeared to be largely, if not entirely, localized to neurons. AR and ER mRNA-containing neurons were widely distributed in the rat brain, with the greatest densities of cells in the hypothalamus, and in regions of the telencephalon that provide strong inputs in the medial preoptic and ventromedial nuclei, each of which is thought to play a key role in mediating the hormonal control of copulatory behavior

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TN) cases encountered frequently in daily practice indicate significant gaps that still need to be illuminated in the etiopathogenesis. In this study, a novel TN animal model was developed by compressing the dorsal horn (DH) of the upper cervical spinal cord.
METHODS: Eighteen rabbits were equally divided into three groups, namely control (CG), sham (SG), and spinal cord compression (SCC) groups. External pressure was applied to the left side at the C3 level in the SCC group. Dorsal hemilaminectomy was performed in the SG, and the operative side wa

BACKGROUND: In leprosy, peripheral nerve involvement is well-documented, cranial nerve impairment in leprosy is less frequently reported, often through isolated case reports. This review aims to elucidate the pattern and spectrum of cranial nerve involvement in leprosy patients, enhancing understanding about pathogenesis and management.
METHODS: Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review of case reports and series documenting cranial nerve involvement in leprosy. Searches were performed across PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar up to February 2, 2024, without lang

BACKGROUND: Photophobia is an abnormal sensitivity to light experienced by migraineurs during attacks. The pathophysiology of photophobia is poorly understood. Nevertheless, 2 facts appear to have a link with photophobia: visual cortex hyperexcitability on the one hand and interactions between visual pathway and trigeminal nociception on the other.
METHODS: We used H(2)(15)O PET to study photophobia induced by continuous luminous stimulation covering the whole visual field in 8 migraineurs during spontaneous migraine attacks, after headache relief by sumatriptan and during attack-free interva

The neural mechanisms involved in transmission of proprioceptive information from muscles are not fully understood. Proprioceptive signals from jaw-closing muscle spindles (jcms) are relayed to the supratrigeminal nucleus (Su5), and, then, from the Su5 to the thalamus including the oval paracentral nucleus (OPC) via the trigeminal lemniscal pathway and to the jcms-IntDL and jcms-MedDL (the dorsolateral hump of interposed cerebellar nucleus [IntDL] and the dorsolateral protuberance of medial cerebellar nucleus [MedDL], which were electrophysiologically identified to receive jcms-proprioception)

Synovitis contributes to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, nevertheless, the detailed nociceptive mechanism remains unclear. In this study, a rat model of TMJ synovitis was induced by intra-articular injection with complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA). After CFA-induced synovitis, pain behaviors were observed. Then, TMJ, trigeminal ganglion, and trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) tissues were collected, and immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of substance P (SP) and protein gene product 9.5 (PGP9.5) in the synovium tissue. Furthermore, the gene expression level of SP and PGP9.5

OBJECTIVES: To develop a translational mouse model for the study and measurement of non-evoked pain in the orofacial region by establishing markers of nociceptive-specific grooming behaviors in the mouse.
BACKGROUND: Some of the most prevalent and debilitating conditions involve pain in the trigeminal distribution. Although there are current therapies for these pain conditions, for many patients, they are far from optimal. Understanding the pathophysiology of pain disorders arising from structures innervated by the trigeminal nerve is still limited, and most animal behavioral models focus on

REM sleep triggers a potent suppression of postural muscle tone - i.e., REM atonia. However, motor control during REM sleep is paradoxical because overall brain activity is maximal, but motor output is minimal. The skeletal motor system remains quiescent during REM sleep because somatic motoneurons are powerfully inactivated. Determining the mechanisms triggering loss of motoneuron function during REM sleep is important because breakdown in REM sleep motor control underlies sleep disorders such as REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and cataplexy/narcolepsy. For example, RBD is characterized by

The agonistic display of the Siamese fighting fish is characterized by tonic extension of the gill opercula, which is mediated by a single abductor, the opercular dilator muscle. This muscle consists of three bellies, which have different origins and biochemical properties. As part of an effort to define in detail the neural substrate for agonistic display, the distribution, number, and morphology of opercular dilator motoneurons in the trigeminal motor nucleus were examined by retrograde horseradish peroxidase labelling and Golgi-impregnation. The trigeminal motor nucleus consists of three su

PURPOSE: To identify possible neuronal pathways leading to herpetic ocular disease after primary oral infection in mice.
METHODS: The SC16 strain of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 (10(6) plaque-forming units) was injected into the mucocutaneous border of the left upper lip. Animals were killed 2 to 10 days postinoculation (DPI). Spread of the virus in neural structures was studied by immunochemistry.
RESULTS: HSV1 first replicated at the site of inoculation and then at the superior cervical ganglion (at 2 DPI). The trigeminal ganglion and the facial nerve fibers were infected by 4 DPI. Infecti

The cerebellar projection from the trigeminal nuclear complex is one of the major populations of the cerebellar inputs. Although this projection is essential in cerebellar functional processing and organization, its morphological organization has not been systematically clarified. The present study addressed this issue by lobule-specific retrograde neuronal labeling and single axonal reconstruction with anterograde labeling. The cerebellar projection arose mainly from the interpolaris subdivision of the spinal trigeminal nucleus (Sp5I) and the principal trigeminal sensory nucleus (Pr5). Althou

Sensory deprivation studies in neonatal mammals, such as monocular eye closure, whisker trimming, and chemical blockade of the olfactory epithelium have revealed the importance of sensory inputs in brain wiring during distinct critical periods. But very few studies have paid attention to the effects of neonatal peripheral sensory nerve damage on synaptic wiring of the central nervous system (CNS) circuits. Peripheral somatosensory nerves differ from other special sensory afferents in that they are more prone to crush or severance because of their locations in the body. Unlike the visual and au
