Hepatic sarcoidosis.

We describe six cases of hepatic sarcoidosis. Clinical presentation was with weight loss, hepatomegaly and abnormal liver function tests. In addition there was fever, itching, splenomegaly and abdominal lymphadenopathy in some. CT scan revealed mediastinal lymphadenopathy in all. Liver biopsy showed noncaseating epithelioid granulomas. Serum angiotensin converting enzyme was elevated in four cases. All patients had received anti-tuberculosis treatment with clinical diagnosis of hepatic tuberculosis. None of them improved, while some showed clinical deterioration. All patients responded to cort

Tuberculous pseudotumor of the liver.

Tuberculosis of the liver in association with generalized miliary tuberculosis is not an uncommon clinical entity. A solitary tuberculous liver abscess, however, is rare. Two such cases, in which there was no clinical evidence of extrahepatic tuberculosis, are reported. The similarities between this condition and other causes of hepatic lesions are discussed, with particular emphasis placed on the imaging patterns of various diagnostic imaging procedures.

A rare case of miliary tuberculosis accompanying perihepatitis.

Perihepatic capsulitis is associated with various diseases, such as Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, perforated cholecystitis, perforated hepatic abscess, and tuberculous peritonitis. Miliary tuberculosis is present in about 2% of all reported cases of tuberculosis and is characterized by the widespread millet-like hematogenous dissemination of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We describe a 24-year-old virgin patient presenting with right upper quadrant and costovertebral angle pain. Diffuse perihepatic capsular enhancement was observed in abdominal computed tomography scans

Coexisting Pyogenic and Tuberculous Liver Abscess in Uncontrolled Diabetes: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Hepatic tuberculosis can mimic pyogenic liver abscess, particularly in patients with uncontrolled diabetes. Persistent or atypical hepatic lesions unresponsive to antibiotics should prompt tissue diagnosis using histopathology and molecular assays like GeneXpert to ensure timely diagnosis and appropriate management.

Safety of 2 months of rifampin and pyrazinamide for treatment of latent tuberculosis.

An alternative regimen for the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection is 2 months of rifampin and pyrazinamide, but some patients have died of hepatitis associated with this therapy. One hundred fourteen patients received rifampin/pyrazinamide in Wake County, North Carolina, between December 1999 and May 2002; 60.5% of these patients were homeless, and at least 17% drank alcohol to excess. Seventy-seven patients (67.5%) completed a full 2-month course. Nine patients had a history of viral hepatitis or chronic liver disease. Four of 114 (3.5%; 95% confidence interval, 1.0-8.7%) patients dev

Spontaneously reported hepatic adverse drug events in Korea: multicenter study.

Hepatic adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to certain drugs may differ within each country, reflecting different patterns of prescription, socioeconomic status, and culture. The purpose of this study was to assess the suspected cause of hepatic ADRs using the spontaneously reported pharmacovigilance data from Korea. A total of 9,360 spontaneously reported adverse drug events (ADEs) from nine Pharmacovigilance Centers were analyzed. Risk of hepatic ADEs was assessed by calculating the reporting odds ratio (ROR). Of the 9,360 cases, 567 hepatic ADEs were reported. The most frequently prescribed drug

Tuberculous hepatitis in renal transplant recipients following alemtuzumab induction therapy.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is one of many opportunistic infections in renal transplant recipients, arising either from reactivation of latent infection or de novo infection, occasionally donor derived. M. tuberculosis hepatitis has never been reported in patients who have received alemtuzumab as part of their renal transplant management. We describe 2 patients who underwent deceased-donor renal transplantation following alemtuzumab induction therapy and presented with a febrile syndrome, subsequently diagnosed as tuberculous hepatitis, one with disseminated disease. Both responded we

[Effectiveness and problems of PZA-containing 6-month regimen for the treatment of new pulmonary tuberculosis patients].

One third of the world population has been infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and the number of tuberculosis will increase worldwide without more effective programs of tuberculosis control. Despite of the presence of very potent anti-tuberculosis drugs the global tuberculosis situation is still very serious, and such gloomy feature are caused, at least partly, by the failures in the treatment of tuberculosis. The most important factor for the failure in chemotherapy is incompliance of the patients to the regimens. History of the chemotherapy of tuberculosis can be said as the history of

Isolated pancreatic tuberculosis masquerading as pancreatic cancer.

Isolated pancreatic tuberculosis (TB) remains a rarity despite the high incidence of tuberculosis in many of the African and Asian countries. Presentation as discrete pancreatic mass often masquerades as pancreatic neoplasm and diagnosis may require histology. Extra-hepatic portal hypertension due to splenic vein thrombosis complicating pancreatic TB has been reported in the literature. We report here a case of isolated pancreatic TB with pancreatic head mass mimicking neoplasm with extra-hepatic portal hypertension. The possibility of TB should be considered in the list of differential diagno

Screening for HBV, HCV, HIV and syphilis infections among bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis prisoners: An urgent action required.

Viral hepatitis, syphilis, HIV, and tuberculosis infections in prisons have been identified globally as a public health problem. Tuberculosis (TB) and viral hepatitis co-infection may increase the risk of anti-tuberculosis treatment-induced hepatotoxicity, leading to the frequent cause of discontinuation of the first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the epidemiological features of HCV, HBV, syphilis and HIV infections among bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis prisoners in Campo Grande (MS), Central Brazil. The participants w
