Tuberculosis remains an important public health problem globally. Addison's disease due to bilateral adrenal Tuberculosis as the primary manifestation of Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis is a very rare clinical entity. Previously healthy 52 years old male presented with increasing darkening of the skin, dizziness, loss of weight, loss of appetite, generalized weakness for one year and diarrhoea, vomiting for 3 months. Patient did not have any history of exposure to Tuberculosis. Physical examination revealed a hyposthenic man with generalized hyperpigmentation especially on the face, oral mucosa, p

BACKGROUND: Hematogenous disseminated tuberculosis predisposes to concurrent tuberculous meningitis (TBM), the most devastating and disabling form of tuberculosis. However, children often have atypical clinical symptoms, difficulty in specimen collection, low specimen content, and an increasing incidence of drug-resistant tuberculosis. Thus, the accurate diagnosis and timely treatment of childhood tuberculosis face monumental challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: The 14-year-old female presented to the hospital with intermittent fever, headache, and blurred vision. Her cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) show

Tuberculous enteritis is a clinical rarity even in immunocompromised patients. We present a case of miliary tuberculosis with gastrointestinal involvement. A 47-year-old homosexual male from Philippines with no significant medical history presented with productive cough, night sweats, subjective fevers, shortness of breath, watery diarrhea, and 25-pound weight loss in past one year. On physical exam he was afebrile, mildly hypotensive, tachycardic, and tachypneic, but saturating well on room air. He was cachectic with oral thrush and bilateral fine rales. Chest X-ray revealed a miliary pattern

In 2008, elderly subjects accounted for more than 262,000 cases of smear-positive tuberculosis worldwide, reaching the highest age-adjusted rates in some regions. Elders are at a greater risk for reactivation of latent tuberculosis or acquisition of new infection, especially if they live in long-term care facilities or are smokers. Once overt clinical tuberculosis appears, they are at increased risk of hospitalization and death. Pulmonary tuberculosis presentation may be atypical in elderly people, as they tend to have lower prevalence of fever, sweating, or hemoptysis, and their chest x-rays

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that primarily affects the lungs. Although TB can affect many organs, involvement of the head and neck is extremely rare and involvement of the salivary glands is even rarer. Clinical diagnosis is challenging and may be misdiagnosed, as it mimics neoplasms on physical exams and imaging. In this paper, we present a case of parotid tuberculosis in a 28-year-old man who presented with a painful left parotid mass, loss of appetite, fever, and weight loss for six months. Suspicion of infection arose, and treatment began with int

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most common systemic diseases in India. Intraocular TB is however, rare. Retinal vasculitis is a relatively rare manifestion of intraocular TB. We report a case of bilateral retinal vasculitis in a 19-year-old girl with abdominal tuberculosis. The patient responded well to anti-TB treatment along with a short course of low dose oral steroids. Vision in her right eye however remained compromised due to residual maculopathy. This is the first report of bilateral retinal vasculitis due to colonic TB.

A 1:1 matched case-control study of etiologic fraction (EF) of female lung cancer was conducted in Guangdong Province. 200 female cases with primary lung cancer were selected and 200 female controls matched by age, area of residence and education from five hospitals. Multiple conditional logistic regression analysis turned out that passive smoking from spouse, bad ventilation in kitchen, liking for pickles or salted fish, history to chronic bronchitis, family history of tumour, pulmonary tuberculosis, taking oral contraceptive were the independent risk factors of female lung cancer (OR = 2.16-

Chromoblastomycosis is caused by dematiaceous fungi. It develops after inoculation of the organism into the skin. We report a case of chromoblastomycosis in a pulmonary tuberculosis patient without known history of trauma. The lesions were initially diagnosed as sporotrichosis and skin tuberculosis. Histopathology of scales and skin biopsy specimen revealed sclerotic bodies, the hallmark of chromoblastomycosis. The causative organism was identified as Fonsecaea monophora by rDNA ITS sequencing. The lesions recovered markedly after two month treatment with oral terbinafine 250 mg daily accordin

The present report concerns a case of pulmonary nocardiosis in an immunocompetent host. This patient was diagnosed as having smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis and received supervised antitubercular treatment for 6 months from a government run tuberculosis centre (Directly Observed Therapy, Short-Course (DOTS) centre). At 3 months after completion of treatment, she presented with fever and cough with posterior-anterior (PA) view chest x ray showing a cavitary lesion on left upper zone. She was subsequently diagnosed as having a case of pulmonary nocardiosis and responded to oral cotrimoxazo

CASE REPORT: A healthy 57 year-old woman with past untreated pulmonary tuberculosis, disclosed a bilateral uveitic syndrome characte rized by iritis, vitreitis, multiple peripheral retinal punched-out lesions, and cystoid macular edema. Systemic evaluation was unremarkable except for a 30 mm tuberculin skin test. Relapses occurred after oral and periocular corticosteroids were interrupted, but the inflammation completely disappeared after a 6 month course of isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide.
DISCUSSION: Intraocular tuberculosis should be considered as a treatable cause of peripheral mul

Better access to tuberculosis testing is a key priority for fighting tuberculosis, the leading cause of infectious disease deaths in people. Despite the roll-out of molecular WHO-recommended rapid diagnostics to replace sputum smear microscopy over the past decade, a large diagnostic gap remains. Of the estimated 10·6 million people who developed tuberculosis globally in 2022, more than 3·1 million were not diagnosed. An exclusive focus on improving tuberculosis test accuracy alone will not be sufficient to close the diagnostic gap for tuberculosis. Diagnostic yield, which we define as the pro

BACKGROUND: In 2018 the World Health Organization recommended a switch to an all oral bedaquiline-based second-line regimen for treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). How these new second-line regimens fare in comparison to first-line regimens for treatment of drug-sensitive tuberculosis (DS-TB) is not well known.
METHODS: In this study, we contemporaneously enrolled subjects with DS-TB (n = 31) or DR-TB (n = 23) and assessed their response to therapy with first-line (rifampin, isoniazid, ethambutol, pyrazinamide) or second-line (bedaquiline, pyrazinamide, levofloxacin, linezolid,

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the qualitative diagnosis method of atlanto-axial tuberculosis and the corresponding therapeutic strategy.
METHODS: Twenty-two cases with atlanto-axial tuberculosis proven by histopathologic diagnosis were observed. Three cases and 17 cases underwent trans-oral biopsy and CT-guide percutaneous biopsy respectively, 2 cases were conformed by frozen section in operation. Thirteen of the 22 cases underwent surgical therapy: 1 case with anterior trans-oral radical eradication and fusion under Halo-vest immobilization, 7 cases with anterior cervical radical eradication, 1

Thioridazine is an orally administered antipsychotic drug with potential for treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). However, drug-induced adverse cardiac effects have been reported when thioridazine was used at an efficacious oral dose of 200mg/day to treat TB. Pulmonary delivery of thioridazine could be a rational approach to reduce dose-related side effects while enabling high drug concentrations at the primary site of infection. The present study compares in vitro aerosol performance, storage stability, and in vitro antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of two inhalable powders co

Oral candidiasis is a common opportunistic infection among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals, with growing concerns about the emergence of non-albicans species with resistance to antifungal agents. This cross-sectional study determined the prevalence of oral Candida species in Thai HIV-infected adults and factors affecting their colonization. Candida species were identified from oral rinse samples of 60 HIV-infected participants of the MTCT-Plus initiative and 49 healthy controls by culture-based and molecular assays. The prevalence of oral Candida carriage was similar in

BACKGROUND: Ocular tuberculosis is a relatively rare extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis. This vision-threatening disease is extremely challenging to diagnose, particularly because it can mimic other diseases. We report a case of tuberculous ciliary body granuloma initially diagnosed as bullous retinal detachment.
CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old female presented with bullous retinal detachment in her left eye, and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) verified the presence of a lesion with ciliary body granulomatous inflammation. The T-SPOT was positive, and the purified protein derivative (PPD)

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics of orofacial lesions like ulcer, swelling, discharge (with or without fistulae), nodules (tubercles), granulomatous growth, induration, diffuse inflammation, and extraction socket involvement in an Indian population through the case reports and review of literature.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four case reports are presented of patients who had orofacial lesions which turned out to be tuberculous. The diagnosis of tuberculosis was possible because it was kept high on the list of differential diagnosis of orofacial lesions. In o

The growing pandemic of human tuberculosis has not been affected significantly by the widespread use of the only currently available vaccine, bacille Calmette Guerin. Bacille Calmette Guerin protects uniformly against serious paediatric forms of tuberculosis and against adult pulmonary tuberculosis in some parts of the world, but there are clearly populations in high-burden countries which do not benefit from the current vaccination regimen. New tuberculosis vaccines will be essential for the ultimate control of this ancient disease. Research over the past 10 years has produced literally hundr

The rapid emergence of resistance to novel tuberculosis drugs, such as bedaquiline, is a key threat to the long-term effectiveness of novel regimens. Given that the introduction of these agents has enabled the introduction of an all-oral regimen for rifampicin-resistant and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, the rise of resistance underscores the urgent need to safeguard their efficacy and responsible use. A major barrier is the delay in developing reliable tools to detect resistance to novel compounds, which limits clinical decision-making and surveillance efforts. Herein, we outline a framewo
