Tobacco increases the risk of pulmonary infection, especially tuberculosis. We try by this study to analyse this action. It's a comparative study between two groups of patients hospitalized in our department between January 2006 and June 2008. The first group was made of 30 smokers patients hospitalized because of confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis. The second group consists of 30 non smokers patients and also hospitalized because of confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis. Delay of diagnosis was longer in the group of smokers (3, 1 +/- 3 months versus 2 +/- 1 month with p = 0.039). The most frequent s

PLAIN ENGLISH SUMMARY: What is the problem and why is this important? Mini-strokes are similar to full strokes, but symptoms last less than 24 h. Many people (up to 70%) have long-term problems after a mini-stroke, such as anxiety; depression; problems with brain functioning (like memory loss); and fatigue (feeling tired). However, the current healthcare pathway only focuses on preventing another stroke and care for other long-term problems is not routinely given. Without proper treatment, people with long-term problems after a mini-stroke could have worse quality of life and may find it diffi

I have been engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis for about 25 years. I have presented many interesting tuberculosis cases such as cavity, nodule, infiltration, miliary pattern, and bronchial tuberculosis. I summarized that the key point of the diagnosis for pulmonary tuberculosis is, 1) X-ray diagnosis shows no specific findings, so it is important to remind pulmonary tuberculosis as not unusual disease. I will make a proposal to insert pulmonary tuberculosis in the guideline for the diagnosis of pneumonia by the Japanese Respiratory Society. 2) Sputum PCR examinati

One hundred diabetes mellitus patients attending the diabetic clinic and those admitted in the medical wards of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, were selected randomly to study the prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis with the age-and the sexwise distribution in diabetes mellitus patients. The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was established from the dinical symptoms and the estimation of blood sugar levels whereas pulmonary tuberculosis was diagnosed from clinical, radiological and bacteriological examinations. The majority of the patients were above the age of 40 years, the

A tuberculous infection is the result of inhalation of tubercle bacilli either in great numbers or in subjects with diminished immunity. Clinical tuberculosis will only occur in 10 per cent of subjects following a first infection (primary tuberculosis) or subsequently (secondary tuberculosis or by a reactivation of a tuberculous lesion). All the intrathoracic structures may be involved in isolation or in the case of extra thoracic tuberculosis eventually disseminated. The clinical manifestations are most often non-specific. The persistence of respiratory symptoms are nevertheless suggestive, a

This article reviews recent studies conducted outside the United States assessing the efficacy and safety of rifabutin in the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in HIV-infected patients, in patients with newly diagnosed TB, and in patients with multidrug-resistant TB. A 6-month pilot study of 50 Ugandan patients with TB associated with HIV infection showed that rifabutin and rifampin were similarly effective with regard to conversion of sputum-smear findings (sputum conversion) and in bringing about clinical and radiologic improvement. Compared with rifampin, rifabutin showed potential for reducin

Radiographs of the chest of 204 patients with recently diagnosed tuberculosis have been analyzed in terms of nature of changes, localization, age and interrelationship between these parameters. Patients have been treated for three years and a half. Their ages ranged from 0 to 14 years (SD 6.4 +/- 4.2 years). Lymphadenopathy was the commonest radiographic change accounting for 84.3% of all the patients (172 pts) and was more frequently encountered in the youngest age group from 0 to 4 years (p < .0001) and in the right hilomediastinal area (p < .0001). Parenchymal changes were seen in 125 (61.2

Three white male patients with advanced cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis presented with HOA. No other pathology to explain the osteoarthropathy was detected. The osteoarthropathy responded symptomatically to NSAI drugs and treatment of tuberculosis but resolved radiologically in only one patient.

100 patients at first treatment were investigated according to a complete questionnaire for explaining the causes of tardy diagnosis in pulmonary tuberculosis. The roles of the disease, patient and physician in this delay were followed. The insidious or atypical onset of the disease in 82% of these patients explains the long interval (107.2 days on the average) elapsed between the appearance of the first symptoms and the diagnosis determination. As a consequence of low cultural level, many patients cannot give a correct interpretation of the symptomatology and they seek the physician's help af

During an 11 year period, from 1976 to 1986, 33 (10.1%) out of 328 patients with oral cancer treated at our clinic had either a scarred pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) or active TB. Four of these 33 patients developed active TB. In two of these cases TB occurred before the therapy of oral cancer commenced and in the other two, after the operation for oral cancer. In one of the 4 cases, a recrudescence of the TB was suspected. Five cases that were suspected of having TB on analysis of their chest X-rays were administered prophylactic anti-tuberculous chemotherapy, after which no recrudescence or on

In a study of delayed hypersensitivity in 54 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis who were on specific treatment, 33 patients could not be sensitized to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) although 25 of these were tuberculin (PPD) positive. The majority of the patients also had positive skin reactions to another recall antigen, streptokinase-streptodornase. To exclude a drug effect on DNCB reactivity, 40 untreated patients were studied. Twenty-six (65 per cent) of these did not show DNCB reactivity. The cause for nonsensitization to DNCB was not clear. There was no abnormality in the number of T lymp

Two hundred and sixteen patients with pulmonary tuberculosis were reviewed. Childhood and adult patterns of tuberculosis as noted in other countries were recognised. However, some children were seen with an adult pattern most probably due to a reinfection. There were also adults with the childhood pattern most probably due to a failure in the localisation of the primary intra-pulmonary parenchymal lesions with subsequent haematogenous spread. The prognosis in children with the adult pattern, and in adults with the childhood pattern was poor. The lesions (noted in this study) were severe and wi
