The use of point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is not limited to the diagnosis and/or monitoring of critically ill patients. Further, ultrasound guidance is of paramount relevance to aid in successfully and safely performing several procedures in the intensive care unit (ICU). In this article, we review the role of POCUS as a procedural guidance in the ICU. Core procedures include, but are not limited to, vascular cannulation, pericardiocentesis, thoracentesis, paracentesis, aspiration of soft-tissue collections/arthrocentesis and lumbar puncture. With time, the procedures performed by inten

Placental chorangiomas can cause a high-output fetal state and increase neonatal morbidity and mortality. There is a paucity of data published describing the optimal treatment of these cases, and methods for occlusion to date include placement of vascular clips, bipolar cautery, injection of alcohol or surgical glue, interstitial laser, and microcoil embolization. We report 2 cases of prenatally diagnosed chorangiomas that caused a high-output fetal state and were successfully treated with microcoil embolization. This case series describes our technique and supports microcoil embolization as a

BACKGROUND: Vascular punctures are widely used in clinical applications; however, clinical trials have identified complications and poor prognosis for patients undergoing common peripheral vein puncture as compared to ultrasound-guided peripheral venipuncture and catheterization. Ultrasound-guided peripheral venipuncture and catheterization is accurate, simple, has fewer associated complications, and will gradually take the place of common peripheral vein puncture.
METHODS: To study the safety of ultrasound-guided peripheral venous catheterization, a meta-analysis was conducted of relevant ar

OBJECTIVES: Traditionally, caudal epidurals are performed by a landmark-guided approach using the loss of resistance technique. Improvisations to increase the success rate can be attained by implementing modalities, namely neurostimulation and ultrasound, but there is a paucity of literature comparing these 3 approaches. Here, we compare the 3 techniques in terms of the success rate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The primary outcome of this study was to compare the success rate of the 3 techniques, and the secondary outcome was the blood or cerebrospinal fluid aspiration during the procedure. It was

Central venous catheters (CVC) are widely used in critically ill patients and in those undergoing major surgery. Significant adverse events, such as pneumothorax and hemothorax, can be caused by needle insertion during CVC insertion. CVC misplacement is less often described, yet equally important, as it can lead to deleterious complications. Here, we describe a case in which misplacement of a guidewire following infraclavicular puncture of the right axillary vein was detected by continuous ultrasound employing the right supraclavicular fossa view. Utilizing this ultrasound view, the insertion a

In the presence of peritoneal disease, patients often should undergo biopsy of the peritoneum for acquiring a specific pathologic diagnosis. Ultrasound is ideal for guiding peritoneal biopsy, although in some situations, it can be technically challenging. The addition of a contrast agent can improve the visualization of lesions and adjacent organs, providing radiologists increased confidence. A contrast agent can identify perfused areas within the target lesion, improving diagnostic accuracy. We present 3 cases of contrast-enhanced ultrasound-guided peritoneal biopsy. In all cases, we gained a

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography (US)-guided corticosteroid injection (CI) has been attempted to improve injection accuracy in de Quervain's disease (dQD), but its role in improving clinical outcomes and decreasing skin hypopigmentation or atrophy was not established well.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that the US-guided CI is superior to blind CI in symptom improvement and development of skin hypopigmentation or atrophy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-four patients (48 wrists) with dQD received ultrasonography-guided CI (24 wrists/22 patients, group A) or blind CI (24 wrists/22 patients, group B) bet

Ultrasonography of the temporomandibular joint is a non-invasive imaging technic, easy to perform in daily practice. It can be used for diagnosis and to guide intra-articular injections. The objective was to validate a longitudinal in-plane US injection approach of the joint and assess its accuracy. We performed a study in 13 non-embalmed cadavers. The injection was done under real-time US guidance using a needle inserted in-plane with an angulation of 30°and positioned under the capsule until the injection was feasible without resistance. The intra-articular injection was successful in all ca

Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is a rare primary splenic vascular tumor arising from the littoral cells that line the splenic sinuses of the red pulp. Definitive diagnosis of this entity depends on histology and immunochemical studies, for which splenectomy is usually performed. We present three image-guided percutaneous core biopsy proven cases of splenic LCA and also discuss imaging features of these rare tumors on CT, MR, and US findings.

Atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis accounts for most cases of renovascular hypertension (RVH). Hypertensive patients with clinical features suggesting RVH should be submitted to further noninvasive evaluation including duplex Doppler ultrasonography, CT- or MR angiography. Invasive evaluation by contrast-enhanced angiography confirms the diagnosis of renal artery stenosis. However, neither diagnostic test reliably predicts the course of hypertension after revascularisation. The therapeutic approach in hypertensive patients with hemodynamically important renal artery stenosis includes medica
