PURPOSE: To describe the clinical presentation and urodynamic findings in detrusor underactivity (DU) patients and investigate the association between DU and straining related complications such as pelvic organ prolapse (POP), inguinal hernia, and hemorrhoids.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all consecutive patients who underwent urodynamic studies (UDS) from 2012 to 2023, divided into two groups: those with evidence of DU (n = 573), and control subjects with normal voiding parameters (n = 522). Exclusion criteria were patients who lacked sufficient data, those with obstructive voiding p

PURPOSE: Our institution has prospectively studied outcomes from standardized follow-up algorithms for patients with myelomeningocele (MMC). This study conducts a cohort analysis of patients who underwent in-utero MMC closure, constructing a Kaplan-Meier survival curve to address a common question from families: "What is the chance my child will need bladder augmentation at 4, 10, and 15 years?" The Kaplan-Meier curve estimates the probability of survival under varying conditions and time intervals, adjusted to express "bladder intactness" compared to augmented bladder over time since birth.

A 75-year-old woman presented with new onset of confusion, intense episodic dizziness and formed visual hallucinations. Herpes simplex encephalitis and non-convulsive temporal lobe seizures were confirmed with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and electroencephalography testing. In addition, her hospital course was complicated by syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and atonic bladder contributing to an episode of urinary tract infection. After completing 3 weeks of acyclovir treatment, the patient became obtunded with right arm choreiform movements and persistent inflammatory CSF

OBJECTIVE: Palliative transurethral prostatectomy (TURP) is the mainstay of treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms, (LUTS) in men with prostate cancer. Functional outcomes, however, can often be unsatisfactory. Here the value of preoperative urodynamics was investigated in these men.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 41 men with prostate cancer and LUTS who were investigated by urodynamics prior to TURP. All were treated solely by primary androgen deprivation. 19 men with urodynamic proven bladder outflow obstruction (BOO) proceeded to palliative TURP.
RESULTS: Of the 41 m

Multidrug resistance proteins type 4 (MRP4) and 5 (MRP5) play pivotal roles in the transport of cyclic nucleotides in various tissues. However, their specific functions within the lower urinary tract remain relatively unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the effect of pharmacological inhibition of MRPs on cyclic nucleotide signaling in isolated pig bladder. The relaxation responses of the bladder were assessed in the presence of the MRP inhibitor, MK571. The temporal changes in intra- and extracellular levels of cAMP and cGMP in stimulated tissues were determined by mass spectrometry. T

Bladder inflammation and tissue hypoxia were considered important pathognomonic bladder features in detrusor underactivity (DU) and detrusor overactivity (DO) patients. This study investigated urine inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarker levels in DU and DO with DU (DO-DU) patients. Urine samples were collected from 50 DU and 18 DO-DU patients, as well as 20 controls. The targeted analytes included three oxidative stress biomarkers (8-OHdG, 8-isoprostane, and total antioxidant capacity [TAC]) and 33 cytokines. DU and DO-DU patients had different urine biomarker profiles from controls, inc

Objective: To analyze which factors in the history of a posterior urethral valve (PUV) patient relate to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in adulthood. This study also aimed to evaluate whether the patients have developed signs of a myogenic failure of detrusor. Materials and methods: LUTS were evaluated with a DAN-PSS questionnaire in 78 adult patients treated for PUV in childhood. Symptom scores (SS) were compared with patient characteristics and types of treatment. The results of uroflowmetry and post-voiding residual (PVR) measurements were collected from their latest visit to Helsinki

Two female patients aged 70 and 72 with video-urodynamics-confirmed detrusor overactivity and detrusor underactivity (DO-DU) were treated. Patients were refractory to medical therapies and had previously failed intravesical botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) at other centers secondary to urinary retention and difficulty with self-catheterization. Placement of an Interstim II device (Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota) for sacral neuromodulation (SNM) as alternative third-line treatment partially improved overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms while significantly improving voiding symptoms.
