The clinical and pathologic features of six cases of atypical primary ocular melanoma in cats are described. In contrast to diffuse iris melanomas, these atypical tumors originated multifocally from any portion of the uvea and in five of the six cases were very advanced at the time of clinical presentation. Four cases of the simultaneous occurrence of bilateral diffuse melanocytic uveal tumors were studied by us. In each case, the patient had an associated systemic malignant neoplasm diagnosed by biopsy or at autopsy. There was no evidence of metastatic melanoma in any patient. The phospholipids present in uveal (iris/ciliary body and choroid) and retinal bovine ocular melanosomes were identified using mass spectrometry. Similar phospholipid content is found for the two types of uveal melanosome, with sphingomyelin being the major species. Significant differences are found between the uveal and retinal melanosome. INTRODUCTION: Nanophthalmos, characterized by a short axial length (14-17 mm), is a rare disease often associated with severe glaucoma. Uveal effusion is part of the clinical ophthalmologic manifestations we should keep in mind.
CASE REPORT: A nanophthalmic patient underwent trabeculectomy. Postoperatively, examination revealed a nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachment. B scan ultrasonography confirmed thickened sclera and choroidal detachment associated with subtotal retinal detachment. Retinal and choroidal detachments gradually resolved spontaneously with no surgical intervention.

PURPOSE: To describe current laboratory models used to study aqueous outflow. Because development of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is rare in animals, no animal model of POAG is available for laboratory study on the pathogenesis of this condition. This review will discuss the alternative models used in the laboratory to study aqueous outflow.

Many reports have described the choristoma mainly in the epibulbar area, but little is known of the choristoma that occurs intraocularly. This clinicopathological report describes an unusual combination of axial corneal malformation and angiodysgenesis in the uvea, retina and optic nerve in three eyes.
