The vascular architecture of the supravaginal and vaginal parts of the human uterine cervix: a study using corrosion casting and scanning electron microscopy.

The aim of this study was to visualize and describe the vascular architecture of the vaginal and supravaginal parts of the human uterine cer … mucosal capillaries. Both in the muscular layer, as well as in the pericanalar zone, arterioles and venules passed close to each other, often adjoining. This study introduces the idea of two systems responsible for draining blood from the mucosal capillaries. It is also the first to suggest the possible existence of a countercurrent transport between adjo …

[Chilblains].

Chilblain is a frostbite, it belongs to the vascular acrosyndromes by the mere fact of symmetrical lesions and to the dystrophic group by its organic obstructive and thrombotic microangiopathy, especially of venules. Chilblain is conditional on a dysesthesia for cold, diagnosis is easy if in the know, prognosis as usual good and treatment must be more preventive than curative.

The dynamics of local tissue damage induced by Bothrops asper snake venom and myotoxin II on the mouse cremaster muscle: an intravital and electron microscopic study.

The acute tissue damaging effects of Bothrops asper snake venom and a myotoxic Lys-49 phospholipase A2 (myotoxin II) on the mouse cremaster … r about 2 min of exposure to venom or myotoxin, was extensive by 4-5 min, and originated from small venules and their adjoining capillary segments. The venom induced formation of thrombi and emboli in venules, but not in arterioles. Haemorrhage appeared after 4-6 min of exposure, the bleedings always originating from capillaries and small venules. The mic …

Induction and function of vascular adhesion protein-1 at sites of inflammation.

Emigration of leukocytes from the blood into the tissues is critical in controlling lymphocyte patrolling in different lymphatic organs and … VAP-1 was initially characterized by mAb 1B2 which inhibits lymphocyte adhesion to high endothelial venules (HEV) and to purified VAP-1 protein. Here we report the location and function of VAP-1 in normal and inflamed tissues in humans. VAP-1 is abundant in HEV of lymphatic organs belonging to the peripheral lymph node system, but considerably less is exp …

Imaging the construction of capillary networks in the neonatal mouse brain.

Capillary networks are essential for distribution of blood flow through the brain, and numerous other homeostatic functions, including neuro … nesis leading to the formation of capillary networks originated exclusively from cortical ascending venules. Two angiogenic sprouting activities were observed: 1) early, long-range sprouts that directly connected venules to upstream arteriolar input, establishing the backbone of the capillary bed, and 2) short-range sprouts that contributed to expansion o …

Utility of intestinal intravital microscopy for the study of CNS injury-induced immunodepression syndrome (CIDS).

BACKGROUND: Stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other forms of central nervous system (CNS) injury initiate a local inflammatory response. Co … M). RESULTS: PTS caused a significant reduction in the number of adhering leukocytes in submucosal venules of the terminal ileum of mice challenged with LPS compared to LPS-challenged animals without stroke. Leukocyte rolling was also impacted by PTS in the submucosal venules. Following stroke, we also observed decreased mucosal functional capillary dens …

IL-22 is required for the induction of bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue in tolerant lung allografts.

Long-term survival after lung transplantation remains profoundly limited by graft rejection. Recent work has shown that bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT), characterized by the development of peripheral nodal addressin (PNAd)-expressing high endothelial venules and enriched in B and Foxp3+ T cells, is important for the maintenance of allograft tolerance. Mechanisms underlying BALT induction in tolerant pulmonary allografts, however, remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the development of PNAd-expressing high endothelial venules within intragraft lymphoid follicles and the recru…

Microcirculatory effects of sildenafil in experimental testicular torsion in rats.

PURPOSE: Investigate the short-term effect of sildenafil on microcirculation, especially the velocity, the pattern of the flow and the recruitment of the leukocyte in postcapillaries. METHODS: In male Sprague-Dawley rats, the microcirculatory consequences of 60 min experimental testicular torsion, followed by 240 min of reperfusion, were examined. Using fluorescence intravital microscopy, changes in red blood cell velocity in post-capillary venules and rolling as well as adhesion of leukocytes in the postcapillary venules were examined before the torsion and every hour during the reperfusion …

[Pathogenesis of cerebral malaria: facts and hypotheses].

Cerebral malaria (CM) is one of the most serious complications of Plasmodium falciparum infection. It is characterized by sequestration of parasitized red blood cells (PRBC) in cerebral capillaries and venules. Although the exact cause of CM remains unclear, current evidence has clearly implicated metabolic disturbances and host immune responses. Studies on mouse CM models suggest the involvement of host cells and in particular platelets. These results led us to study the role of platelets in human CM. Our findings demonstrated that significantly greater accumulation of platelets occurred in c…

Cochlear vascular pathology and hydrops in otosclerosis.

Three ears with otosclerosis were found incidentally in a series of human temporal bones examined to evaluate cochlear sensorineural degeneration. Otosclerosis was identified with microdissection, surface preparation technique and transmission electron microscopy. Vascular abnormalities were present in all ears, and otosclerosis involved the cochlear endosteum extensively, mainly in the scala tympani of the basal turn. In the scala tympani of the lower half of the basal turn, shunts had formed so that venules deviated abruptly from their normal radiating course towards the spiral vein, left th…

Intravital and electron microscopic observation of Ito cells in rat hepatic microcirculation.

Intralobular distribution of Ito cells (fat-storing cells) in hepatic microcirculatory units was investigated through intravital fluorescenc … ished, namely, multiple patchy autofluorescence activities along the sinusoids and terminal hepatic venules and diffuse parenchymal autofluorescence. Multiple patchy activities showed a rapid photobleaching phenomenon under the continuous ultraviolet excitation. These fluorescent activities were completely eliminated by depleting the intrahepatic retinoid …

Effect of topical histamine on mucosal microvascular permeability and acid secretion in the rat stomach.

The effect of topical histamine on microvascular permeability to macromolecules was studied in the rat gastric mucosa using a fluorescent in vivo microscopy technique. Acid secretion was measured in the pylorus-ligated rat. A topical dose of 10(-2)M histamine increased acid output to a maximum, which was equal to the maximum values attained by intravenous or subcutaneous histamine. Only in rats pretreated with a beta-adrenergic antagonist did 10(-2) to 5 X 10(-2)M histamine cause leak of a fluorescein-albumin conjugate from mucosal microvessels. Leak occurred around collecting venules but not …

Lymphoplasmacyte-Rich Meningioma: Possible Formation of Intratumoral "Tertiary Lymphoid Structures".

A surgical case of lymphoplasmacyte-rich (LPR) meningioma that arose in the region of the clivus of an 81-year-old woman is reported. The tu … neous, and plasma cells occasionally appeared to surround lymphocytic aggregates. Some intratumoral venules showed features of "high endothelial venules." These findings suggested that a dense accumulation of lymphocytes and plasma cells in LPR meningioma was not a simple inflammatory cell infiltration but might represent formation of "tertiary lymphoid s …

Human MAdCAM-1 antibodies as targeted immune modulators.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a highly prevalent condition characterized by chronic inflammation present along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Mitigation of symptoms is critical to the quality of life of patients. Targeting Mucosal Addressin-Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 (MAdCAM-1), a cell surface antigen predominantly expressed on endothelial cells of venules located in the lamina propria of the small intestine and colon, represents an attractive marker to locally deliver therapeutics that dampen inflammation associated with IBD. As such, mAbs derived from eight hybridoma clones were charac…

Tertiary lymphoid structures in endometriosis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs), which reflect organized immune cell aggregates present in non-lymphoid tissues, are consistent features of endometriosis lesions. DESIGN: Detailed histopathological analysis of endometrial and lesion tissue from patients with endometriosis and controls was performed. Multiplex immunofluorescence on select samples was then conducted to identify canonical cell populations present within TLSs: CD3+ and CD8+ T-cells, CD79a+ B-cells, CD208+ dendritic cells, CD21+ follicular dendritic cells, and PNAd+ high endothelial venules. Histology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of the nasopharyngeal tonsil of the buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

The light microscopic appearance and ultrastructure of the nasopharyngeal tonsil (tonsilla pharyngea), collected from 12 adult buffaloes of local mixed breed, were explored for the distribution of different types of epithelia, lymphoid tissue and high endothelial venules. The tonsillar mucosa was lined by pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium having goblet cells. The respiratory epithelium associated with the underlying lymphoid tissue formed the lymphoepithelium. The epithelium was further modified into follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) characterized by reduced epithelial height, p…
