Vestibular modulation of the septo-hippocampal cholinergic system of rats.

Effects of vestibular stimulation on the in vivo release of hypothalamic histamine and hippocampal acetylcholine (ACh) were investigated in urethan-anesthetized rats, using a brain microdialysis method. Changes in glutamate concentration in the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) were also monitored by a microbiosensor technique using a glutamate oxidase-embodied platinum electrode. Caloric stimulation with hot water increased the glutamate release in the MVN, while that with ice water decreased it. It is evidenced that glutamate is a neurotransmitter between afferent vestibular nerve and the MVN.

Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials to Diagnose Vestibular Neuritis: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to explore the diagnostic value of Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMPs) in people with Vestibular Neuritis (VN) with a specific focus on the differential contribution of ocular (oVEMPs) and cervical (cVEMPs) recordings. DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive search was conducted in December 2024 across PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. Studies published in English and involving adult patients with suspected or confirmed VN and assessing VEMPs were considered eligible. REVIEW METHODS: The PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed. Data were extracted rega

A clinical epidemiological study in 187 patients with vertigo.

A retrospective study to investigate the clinical epidemiological characteristics of vertigo was carried out on 187 patients with vertigo. A clinical history for each patient was recorded precisely about the attack, frequency, and development of vertigo, its duration, intensity, and the accompanied symptoms including the risk factors for cerebrovascular disease, etc. All the patients were subjected to physical examination with special attention to neurologic systems and Dix-Hallpike maneuver, computed tomography/computed tomography-angiography (CT/CTA) and MRI scan were performed when necessar

Relevance of function tests in the diagnosis of vestibular disorders.

The diagnostic value or relevance of a vestibular function test is dependent on the whole clinical and functional context of each particular case. It is not the ability to show 'abnormality' in a high number of patients complaining of whatever kind of vertigo, that indicates the relevance of a function test. Neither is relevance of a test based upon the possibility that this test can re-categorize some patients in the same way as has been done by other tests. Each test evaluates some particular functional aspect and this is very different from one test to another. A test is more relevant, i.e.

Organization of vestibular inputs to nucleus tractus solitarius and adjacent structures in cat brain stem.

The vestibular system is involved in maintaining stable blood pressure and respiration during changes in posture and is essential for eliciting motion sickness-related vomiting. Because the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) participates in the regulation of sympathetic and inspiratory outflow and the triggering of emesis, we tested the hypothesis that this region receives vestibular inputs in cats. In one set of experiments, microinjections of the tracer Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin into the medial and inferior vestibular nuclei labeled projections to the middle and lateral regions of the

Effects of droperidol in management of vestibular disorders.

The chemo-therapy of vestibular disease has involved a wide spectrum of pharmacological agents insofar as their mode of action is concerned. In our experience, however, droperidol is one pharmaceutical agent which is remarkably effective in depressing vestibular disturbance regardless of etiology. This medication (also called Inapsine) belongs to a relatively new class of compounds known as butyrophenones and its pharmacological action can best be described as a dopa blocking agent. The activity of droperidol on the nervous system first became evident when it was used in combination with the p

Vestibular findings and brainstem pathology in two siblings with Cockayne's syndrome.

Two siblings with Cockayne's syndrome (CS) are described. Both showed cachectic dwarfism, photosensitivity and progressive neurological dysfunction. The damped-rotation test revealed no vestibular nystagmus in one of them, and reduced per-rotatory nystagmus in the other. Neuropathological examination in the former subject disclosed neuronal loss with fibrillary gliosis in the vestibular nuclei, whereas neuronal degeneration was not apparent in the abducens nuclei, the oculomotor nuclei and the paramedian pontine reticular formation. Our findings suggest that CS might cause vestibular dysfuncti

Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome: Relating Clinical Findings With Vestibular Neural Responses From a Guinea Pig Model.

HYPOTHESIS: In superior canal dehiscence (SCD), fluid displacement of the endolymph activates type I vestibular hair cells in the crista of the affected canal and thus irregular superior canal (SC) neurons in Scarpa's ganglion, which provides the neurophysiological basis for the clinical presentation of SCD. BACKGROUND: Patients with SCD display sound- and vibration-induced vertigo/nystagmus and increased amplitudes of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. METHODS: Extracellular recordings from n = 25 primary vestibular neurons of 16 female guinea pigs were analyzed. We recorded from the sa

Stimulation of otolith irregular fibers produces a rostro-caudal gradient in activity in the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC), but not the vestibulocerebellum (VeCb).

UNLABELLED: The vestibular system is important for posture, balance, motor control, and spatial orientation. Each of the vestibular end organs have specialized neuroepithelia with both regular and irregular afferents. In otolith organs, the utricle and saccule, afferents most responsive to linear jerk (jerk - derivative of acceleration) are located in the striola and project centrally to the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) as well as the uvula and nodulus of the vestibulocerebellum (VeCb). The pattern of central neuronal activation attributed to otolith irregular afferents is relatively unkno

Multisensory Convergence of Visual and Vestibular Heading Cues in the Pursuit Area of the Frontal Eye Field.

Both visual and vestibular sensory cues are important for perceiving one's direction of heading during self-motion. Previous studies have identified multisensory, heading-selective neurons in the dorsal medial superior temporal area (MSTd) and the ventral intraparietal area (VIP). Both MSTd and VIP have strong recurrent connections with the pursuit area of the frontal eye field (FEFsem), but whether FEFsem neurons may contribute to multisensory heading perception remain unknown. We characterized the tuning of macaque FEFsem neurons to visual, vestibular, and multisensory heading stimuli. About

Connections of Purkinje cell axons of lobule X with vestibulocerebellar neurons projecting to lobule X or IX in the rat.

Connections of Purkinje cell axons of lobule X (nodulus) with vestibulocerebellar neurons projecting to lobule X or IX (uvula) were revealed in the rat. Purkinje cell axons were anterogradely labeled with biotinylated dextran (BD) injected into sublobule Xa while vestibular neurons were retrogradely labeled with cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) injected into sublobule Xa or IXc. Labeled terminals of Purkinje cell axons of lobule X were numerous in the superior vestibular nucleus (SV), medial parts of the parvocellular (MVpc) and the caudal part (MVc) of the medial vestibular nucleus (MV), and gro

Intrinsic and synaptic plasticity in the vestibular system.

The vestibular system provides an attractive model for understanding how changes in cellular and synaptic activity influence learning and memory in a quantifiable behavior, the vestibulo-ocular reflex. The vestibulo-ocular reflex produces eye movements that compensate for head motion; simple yet powerful forms of motor learning calibrate the circuit throughout life. Learning in the vestibulo-ocular reflex depends initially on the activity of Purkinje cells in the cerebellar flocculus, but consolidated memories appear to be stored downstream of Purkinje cells, probably in the vestibular nuclei.

A simplified diagnostic approach to dizziness in children.

The objective of the study was to validate the effectiveness of a questionnaire and computer-assisted algorithm in diagnosing children with dizziness or vertigo. Dizziness and vertigo are common complaints in children, causing an extensive, often unnecessary evaluation. A pediatric "dizziness questionnaire" was designed and a computer-assisted algorithm was developed to facilitate the diagnostic task. A retrospective medical record review was conducted on all children presenting to the clinic for dizziness or vertigo throughout a 2-year period. The information was used by one investigator to c
