Asymmetrical brain activity discriminates between positive and negative affective stimuli in human infants.

Ten-month-old infants viewed videotape segments of an actress spontaneously generating a happy or sad facial expression. Brain activity was recorded from the left and right frontal and parietal scalp regions. In two studies, infants showed greater activation of the left frontal than of the right frontal area in response to the happy segments. Parietal asymmetry failed to discriminate between the conditions. Differential lateralization of the hemispheres for affective processes seems to be established by 10 months of age.

[The preference for the final digits in blood pressure determination: a continuing education experience].

The CRONICAT program is developing a Project for the Control of Hypertension in three areas of central Catalonia. In the analysis of the blood pressure data of the registry of patients from this project, carried out 18 months after its beginning, it was found that a high proportion of blood pressure (BP) readings showed 0 or 5 as the terminal digit (57.3% and 16.6% in diastolic BP, and 66.6% and 11.8% in systolic BP, respectively). To improve the quality of the reading two continuing education activities were carried out; a seminar where a practical session of blood pressure measurement was de

Comparing the effectiveness of video and written material for improving knowledge among sleep disorders clinic patients with limited literacy skills.

BACKGROUND: Health care professionals often use written material or video recordings to teach their patients without knowing which is more effective for comprehension of the information. METHODS: Patients watched either an instructional videotape about sleep apnea or read a newly designed brochure, then responded to a structured questionnaire containing 11 knowledge-based questions and 1 open-ended question (requesting suggestions for improvement of the brochure or videotape). RESULTS: Mean reported educational level was grade 12, and mean reading level was between grade 7 and 8. Using video

Kinematic and qualitative analysis of lower-extremity movements in preterm infants with brain lesions.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effects of preterm birth, severe brain lesions, and postterm age on kicking movements of young infants and to compare the prognostic value of kinematic analysis of kicking with a qualitative assessment of infants' spontaneous movements. SUBJECTS: The subjects were 12 full-term infants without brain injury, 12 low-risk preterm infants without brain injury, and 11 preterm infants with severe brain lesions (periventricular leukomalacia). METHODS: Videotape recordings of each infant's motor behavior in a supine position were…

Electromyography patterns of propriospinal myoclonus can be mimicked voluntarily.

In order to investigate the clinical impact of polymyographic evaluation on the diagnosis of propriospinal myoclonus (PSM), we performed electromyography recordings of various truncal muscles in eight healthy volunteers while they mimicked PSM symptoms. Before the experiment, each volunteer learned how to mimic PSM by watching a videotape that showed typical PSM characteristics, i.e., brief symmetric flexion of the trunk. The recorded polymyographic patterns of all volunteers were quite compatible with those found in the previous reports. The present study demonstrates that previously known po

Urinary manometry in patients with spinal cord injury: neurourological considerations in the rehabilitation of acute and chronic neurogenic bladder.

Recordings of pressure within the bladder, urethra, rectum, and external anal sphincter with image intensification and videotaping were carried out in spinal cord injury patients with complete and incomplete lesions, during spinal shock and in the chronic stage. The behavior of the external urethral sphincter and the somatic and visceral motor reflexes of the sacral segments were studied, during and after spinal shock. During spinal shock the majority of patients retained sacral somatomotor activity, in the absence of visceromotor activity, and resistance values at the external urethral sphinc

Novice vs expert inter-rater reliability of the balance error scoring system in children between the ages of 5 and 14.

BACKGROUND: The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is a tool to measure balance, however, no studies have shown its reliability between novice and expert raters. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the inter-rater reliability of BESS measurements when performed by novice raters compared to experts, and does completion of a focused, online training module increase the inter-rater reliability among novice raters? METHODS: In this reliability study, 5 novice volunteers were asked to independently rate BESS tests from 50 random prerecorded BESS videos of normal healthy subjects aged 5-14. Novice raters

Using text mining and sentiment analysis to analyse YouTube Italian videos concerning vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Recently, social networks have become a popular source of information on health topics. Particularly, in Italy, there is a lively discussion on the web regarding vaccines also because there is low vaccination coverage, vaccines hesitancy, and anti-vaccine movements. For these reasons, in 2017, Institutions have introduced a law to force children to make ten compulsory vaccines for school attendance and proposed a vaccination campaign. On social networks, this law has fostered a fierce discussion between pro-vaccinations and anti-vaccinations people. This paper aims to understand if

Objectively confirmed prevalence of sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder in pre-school children.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder (RMD) (ie, sleep-related repetitive movements involving large muscle groups) can impair sleep quality, cause local injury, and disturb household members. Previous parental reports indicate prevalence rates in children under three years of age between 5.5 and 67%. We studied the prevalence of RMD with objective home videosomnography. METHODS: Parents of 707 children having their one-year routine health check (357 male), 740 children having their two-year health check (395 male), and 17 children of unknown age (nine male), were asked

Variable Response to CPAP in a Case of Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea: An Unusual Cause.

The objective of this report is to present clinical and scientific evidence to support the role of head position in the management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with positive airway pressure. OSA, characterized by repetitive obstruction of the upper is a common medical condition associated with daytime somnolence, morning headaches, mood disturbances, and a variety of cardiopulmonary complications. The role of head position during obstructive respiratory events has been largely overlooked. We present a case where OSA severity decreased significantly with the head rotated in the right latera

Linguistic reflections of social engagement in Asperger discourse and narratives: A quantitative analysis of two cases.

The present linguistic analyses of two children (aged 8 and 10) with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and their two matched controls are based on dyadic therapist-child conversations and on picture description tasks. The circa 100 analysis features covering aspects of (i) lexicon (e.g. prominalization), (ii) structural characteristics of turns, (iii) co-operation features (e.g. shared/non-shared elaboration of themes), (iv) prosody, (v) cognitive aspects (e.g. involvement/commitment, world of discourse) and (vi) affect features, show that the AS speakers describe, rather than narrate their conceptualiza

Evaluating symmetry and facial motion using 3D videography.

Advances in 3-dimensional (3D) data capture, tracking, and computer modeling now allow for more appropriate measurement and analysis of the face. 3D video not only enables precise analysis of facial symmetry, it broadens our capabilities to accurately study facial volume and facial movement and the forces generated within tissue. Research in facial plastics outcomes has traditionally been evaluated with subjective measures. Current 3D methods are far superior and generate reproducible, accurate, and objective data for such clinical studies. As these technologies become more readily available,

Electroencephalogram and heart rate regulation to familiar and unfamiliar people in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Few studies have examined whether familiarity of partner affects social responses in children with autism. This study investigated heart rate regulation (respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA]: The myelinated vagus nerve's regulation of heart rate) and temporal-parietal electroencephalogram (EEG) activity while nineteen 8- to 12-year-old children with autism and 14 controls viewed videos of a familiar and an unfamiliar person reading a story. Children with autism had lower overall RSA levels and exhibited decreased RSA to the unfamiliar person, versus control children. Both groups decreased tempor

Paroxysmal bipedal activity during syncope related to carotid body tumor.

Involuntary patterned motor activity may occur during seizures, especially those of frontal lobe origin, and during transient ischemic attacks. Paroxysmal patterned motor activity in frontal lobe epilepsy has been attributed to direct involvement of mesial frontal regions by the epileptic discharge. Paroxysmal bipedal frenetic activity occurred during an episode of syncope in a patient with a carotid body tumor. The presence of rhythmic motor patterns similar to the epileptic ones also during syncope and cerebral ischemia suggest a phenomenon of release from neocortical inactivation, probably
